Supposed to be this month I think. Their website doesn't say though. www.4fm.ie

Latest I heard was mid February. Launch seems to be going well, except for a few delays (which seems to be the norm with station launches nowadays).

The lineup seems pretty impressive from what I've heard...Gareth O'Callaghan, Gerry Stevens, Brian McCall and Jimmy Greeley.

Will it be broadcast nationwide or only in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭brettmirl

The franchise area for the service is for Dublin City and County and commuter belt, Cork City and County, Galway City and County, Limerick City and County and County Clare.

County Clare? Overspill I presume. Yet 45,000 and overspill can't listen.

Indeed. Go figure, as the Americans say.

I have still not heard an explanation that holds water as to why the south-east is being deprived of the extra choice this station would bring.

Saw that posted elsewhere (edit : actually in the link below!), and I'll reply the same here.....if it's only twice as good as 2FM then it'll be pretty poor.....

    Stalker alert!

I wonder will they have new DJs and presenters or will we start hearing the ones that were let go from other stations, like Declan Carthy(Newstalk)? They only have a description of their programmes, no presenters mentioned yet.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, you can expect Gareth O'Callaghan, Jimmy Greeley, Brian McCaul and Gerry Stevens (all former RTE staff interestingly enough)

    Sorry missed that post. Thanks.
Is Brian McCaul not on another radio station at the moment? TodayFM perhaps?

4FM Transmission Proposals from Page 10, no freq allocations mentioned but we already know that Cork will be served by the highest concentration of TXs in the country with the main TXs on 94.8, 95.4, 97.4 and several fill-in auxillary TXs dotted around the county.

Really. Given the demographic I wouldnt use terms such "has been". Especially as regrds GOC - he did pull in serious listenership on a national station! But hey you dont need to have actually worked in the industry to have an opinion, sure anyone could do it...Who would you have on if it was your station Flutterin ?

4FM have a new look website and another launch date, February 27th...well we'll just have to wait and see if yet another deadline for launch passes us by without a tx being powered up..

    Clink here

Down the end banner of that new site...Dublin Cork Limerick Galway.

    No mention of Co Clare....odd.

But will 4fm turn out to be yet another variation on a theme? by which I mean > News on the Hour, followed by a sports report, interspesced by 80s music, a virtual carbon copy of all other Irish radio stations, with all guests introduced as being "In Studio"

Maybe I am being too cynical, but if Newstalk cant fly high, then I doubt if 4fm can .......

    I hope I am wrong.

The emphasis and focus will be on 60s and 70s music with many specialist programmes catering for more ecletic tastes like Jazz, Soul etc. I doubt you'll hear much 80s.

BTW The 80s revival started around 1998 and has been going strong ever since.

Dangerous allegation you're making there mate, about an independent statutory body and how they reach their licensing decisions.

Was thinking the same myself, but I presume vanman's going to come back on and quote the facts and figures and proof ?

Dodgy Licenseing decisions, that could never happen here, right?

Well he wouldn't be the only one to think that (not that I do of course).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 874 ✭✭✭More Music

Just because he's from Waterford. What's that got to do with it?

I'm sure I've asked this before, but just in case any news has been leaked: Any idea of 4fm's line-up in terms of presenter?

Hey DJ Supreme, where did you find out about the line-up? Do you know of anyone else on it?

    Aaaaaaahhhhhh!

That will interfere with my future listiening of South East Radio, Live95FM and ClareFM

Unless it's on the internet, it won't have any impact on listening to South East Radio as it won't be picked up in Wexford.

The names I mentioned have all been talked about in media circles. Most of them left their old stations recently to take up their new role. The only other name I know of is Kerry Gray as Head of News. She was formerly with ABC Waterford, South East, INN and Fine Gael.

I think it's Gareth o Callaghan. He used to be on RTE Radio and Galway Bay Fm. A DJ I have never heard but presume he's hot **** since he got a job on a Multi-City radio station.

(I only heard this so don't hold me to it)

He's most definitely an established professional, but I wouldn't go so far as to say sh*t hot, to be honest.

It's widely acknowledged that practically the entire content of his 2fm show "Gareth O Callaghan in the afternoon" was based on the Beeb's "Steve Wright in the afternoon" ( sketches, workplace competitions, prank phonecalls, silly voices in the background and all) but on GBFM he's mellowed into a more Woganesque broadcaster.

Good luck to them in 4fm I hope it works out.

I do think it strange that they aren't in Waterford or in Letterkenny. The Waterford thing about WLRFM seems to be quite possible I thought it was strange that they pretty much gave them a monopoly with Beat (I know their are other owners of Beat but WLRFM are part of Beat). [disclaimer] IMO, I don't think it to be the case TBH [/dislaimer]

I was asking someone in the know if they thought that music on radio stations in Ireland are constantly following the crowd i.e. Spin goes from Dance to pop, Lite goes from over 35s to pop, Newstalk becomes more about talk then news, Today FM goes from an older audience to pop with some Current Affairs and 2FM only has Gerry for chat etc etc. and could this happen to 4fm or Phantom????? They seemed to think that their are pressures there but that neither 4fm or Phantom couldn't afford to do that, since their markets are far more defined and their audience would leave.

I can understand why you'd wonder about it not broadcasting in Waterford, but why Letterkenny?

Donegal always seems a bit cut off from the rest of the country. Multicity licence and yet it won't broadcast into any of the towns in the 3 ulster counties.

You mean you haven't heard the tests yet? 4 am is the best time to catch them. Limerick or Clare transmitters are the best to check at that time.;)
