Once upon a time a certain unamed user (MCOS, in case you were wondering) said that he thought this forim might scare off newbies cos we are all so focussed and serious, and there is never any banter or OT chatter. This unnamed poster even weent so far as to put it down to our age profile (!)

So - to prove that we are all still hip here is a thread for anything that is not about running or tri... Want to start by introducing yourselves, saying what you do outside running / training (as if tehre was an outside), etc...

(and if this thread fails that will prove we are all old farts!)

I have been known to occasionally partake in skiing type activities as well as drinking too much. If possible I like to combine the two events.

The running is merely a futile attempt at trying to stay slightly healthy for a bit longer so that I can continue with the other two passtimes. Beating Woddle whenever possible is just a bonus.

Away from running I like to go to the gym and lift weights/look at men, stuff my face with fruit salad and watch DVD's and spend a fortune going to the UK to watch the mighty Leeds United get trounced by unknown third division teams.

I mostly frequent football sites as football is a big passion of mine, fitness and running websites and thats it really. I'm such a rubbish girl. :pac:

Surprising as it may be to read but my name is Marie
Im hopefully just 12weeks and 4days from finishing my PhD (or at least handing in the first draft). Other websites I frequent are just for day to day crap, and when I want to avoid reality, pricing holidays that arent even happening!!!

My wife-to-be frequents that site a bit. Have heard about some of the stuff on it - everyone just seems to argue amongst themselves and moan about future mother-in-laws, rather than plan their weddings!

hi there once a semi serious (in my eyes only ) runner now trying to get back into it after 11 years. Have done taekwondo for the past 3 years but am focused on running for the mo'. Avid Munster fan and 10yr ticket holder for new stadium.
Had our first child 7 weeks ago so juggling everything. Other sites
    Examiner.ie, runners world.
Fave runners Haile, Tergat, Paula (met her 3! times) Bill Rodgers.

it's horrible, someone posts a picture of a dress (usually a huge merangue) and everyone rushes to tell her how wonderful it is and how wonderful she will look in it. The other common theme is "I'm only a size 20, will walking 10 minutes a day make me a size 8 for my wedding" I've not given into my keyboard-rage yet but it's gonna happen.

At least you have a proper office - I work in a cabin at the end of the garden, it's only starting to defrost now!

Shels - any chance of a recipe for a really nice veggie curry? The hotter the better!

I find Chillies great , really improved my digestion :)

As for a Curry , i think you would be better off with a nice Papaya salad (spicy)and steamed chicken ... But if your set on a Curry i'm sure i can help there...

here's a little about me. When I am not running around, I "enjoy" being a avid Tipp hurling fan. I have a strange obsession with tabasco sauce and currently i am considering heading to Oz.

Nice bike Krusty. I always said I would splash the cash on a bike when I was younger. Now that I'm that bit older can't see it happening any time soon. Used to have a few bikes when I was younger, but having wrote one off, I think I'll be sticking to my Giant rincon for the next year or so.

I also enjoy photography (like a trigger happy fool anywhere).

    Swimming and sudoku also.........

HM, you know you are just jealous of my exec spec office space...

Deffo want a good hot curry recipe. There is a nice Thai place in town but the red curry is waaaaayyyy too mild, I have to ask for it extra extra hot and with dried chillies on the side.

Been kicking around the idea of buying a bike as well actually, though Mrs A is violently opposed (we had a scooter that I wrote off due to an idiot who didn't check his blind spot) and she swore that 2 wheels and an engine wouldn't happen again.

Other hobbies? Mad about music, listen to a broad range, thump about on guitar and am taking my 1st piano lesson later today. Also into cars, especially classics - currently a 1968 Lotus Elan+2, before that a 1964 Jag Mk II, a 1974 Porsche 911 and 1968 Mercedes 250S.

Ah red curry is really really easy to make and if you want it spicy .. do you have an asian market near you there?

I started to write what else I get up to when not running and triathloning and couldn't come up with anything interesting. Quantum physics and Rachmaninov are real conversation stoppers! I used to do a lot of travelling but not so much in the last couple of years.

We have a chinese supermarket, not sure how generically "asian" they are?

HM - I thought you did alot of kyaking?

Only a recent addition to the running world. But am another avid follower of the indoor footie heads. Also play outdoors, but the season is over for another few weeks. Am toying with the idea of giving up the astro football, as tend to pick up a load of knocks.

Also mad into the music, tend to like older more classic rock - big Zeppelin fan. Travelling also is another hobby, planning on getting away in the next few months, but not till I get a few of my goals out of the way.

Love the bike Krusty. What is it - looks very similair to the one I am storing for a relation? I have a R1200ST in my garage at home. Unfortunately it's not mine but I do have the use of it. I used to drive a Blade for a while too. Lovely bike.

Outside of triathlon training and running I do Karate. This is my main sport and have been doing it for as long as I can remember. I also play a bit of golf. I am really enjoying learning to cook at the moment too!

I'm Funky ("and so is my Wife")

After 28 years of playing football I finally gave up that Rafa would call me up and offer me a Professional Contract with Liverpool... (Liverpool fanatic btw - was even at that game in Istanbul..)

Lucky enough to see a fair chunk of the world and ain't finished yet

Funky Jr due in April - will either cause a dramatic decrease or increase in training... :D

yeah we do some kayaking. Mr HM was a white water guy in his youth but these days he is more into the marathon stuff and is the real expert. I'm just along for the ride.

next time your in dublin i can have nice hot one made for you ... The main things you need to pick up are
red curry paste(try to get Mae Ploy its a good brand ) , fish sauce ,coconut milk, lime leaves , pea aubergine 9 i love these), bamboo shoots, Thai basil this really needs to be Thai Basil and not normal just works so much better.

If you want to make it extra spicy get some nice hot chillies and chop them up then roast them first on a hot pan with No oil. Once done add some oil and then your curry paste and fry for about 2 mins make sure not to burn it...

Add you coconut milk and simmer for a short time until all your paste is gone, then add thai Basil, lime leafs, veg etc.. simmer for a while then add Fish sauce , sugar and taste...

One thing about Thai cooking is the most of it is done to taste so hard to give you exact amounts. The wife walks into the kitchen and come out in 20 mins with an amazing curry, i'm stuck in there for 40 mins untill i have an ok one....

Shels - don't you have a restaurant somewhere? Where is it, and do you do any "runners specials" (whatever that may be!)?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,598 ✭✭✭shels4ever

Funny you say that, last night i was just thinking about doing something for the Dublin marathon next year. Were on Botanic road, Glasnevin check the signature for more ;) the hotel there was filled last year with people running the DM so might have to do something there next year. would be hard to get people to give up their pasta for noodles the night before ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

not as hard as you might think. Most of the pasta places come with quite heavy sauces and crappy sources of protein. I'm not an expert on Thai food but it can be lighter with better meat?

Yes a lot lighter the best dishes tend not to have too much sauces with the exception of the Red,Green, yelllow curries , most would be with Chicken or Fish so protein is covered there.
I think i'll look more into this tonight :)
only thing the advantage of pasta is that people can cook it easy at home, so going for something new the night before maybe a bit of a risk..

If I'm not running, I'm reading about it, if I'm not reading about it ,I'm on Boards writing about it and if I'm not doing any of the above, I'm generally driving the wife mad talking about running.

I did use to play pitch n putt for the yellow house pub, I played off +1, but this talent never translated into golf, and after years of trying, I gave up, it was suppose to be a relaxing game but it only ever stressed me out, I'd get very frustrated with shots not working out.
I would have condidered myself a decent footballer back in the day and can claim to have played with Damien Duff back in the Leicter Celtic days.
I enjoy photography and promise to get out more and take more pictures.
I love getting down to Hook in Wexford as often as I can, it's just beautiful down there and relaxing and does anybody know how long it will take to get from Hook to Dungarvan and would you go via Arthurstown.
I have 2 super girls 3 & 5and they recently had there first race, I plan on living as much of my dreams through my kids as possible :D
Sites I visit are all running logs and met eireann to check the weather for tomorrows run.
And I'll add I'm a huge Spurs and Elvis fan, and I do a great version of suspicious minds with a few beers in me

Reading about chillies above there. MRS K is from the Far East so loves her Chilli. I came home one light pretty drunk and decided to do some cooking. Cooked up some minced beef and looked in the fridge to see a big tub of readily mixed group chilli sauce - "weyhey" - lashed it all in and went to bed. Next morning MRS K gets up and says "where's ma chilli paste"............"i've eaten it all dear".................her reply "there was enough in there for a month".......cue to that afternoon - the howling coming from the bathroom was something else.

BTW - has anyone not read that book "WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I TALK ABOUT RUNNING". I just finished it this morning....if anyone wants it I'll lash it in the post in return for some good cyber-karma.

First post in my private messages with your address secures it :)

Couldn't read it all, it just bored the pants of me. A good read though is a book called survival of the fittest, its excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

Actually that's a good idea. I must root out some of the finished running books at home and send them on to people. I keep the training type one's but the funny and biography one's, I'm happy to pass on. I've just finished Sonya O'Sullivan's autobiography so if anyone fancies a read of that, send me your address.
