I don't write but really enjoy this forum. Was thinking if it has not been previously suggested why don't ye guys get together and do a collective project like the photography forum did!?

    Id totally buy it
    :)

I would totally be on for taking part in something like that. We would need a decent editor though - there is good writing here but a lot of it is very raw.

    Top idea, I'm in.

Agree totally about the need for editorial skills.

Also I imagine some kind of selection process would be necessary, to maintain quality without upsetting anybody. Any idea how they managed it over on photography?

So... 3 expressions of interest seems a bit light :(

I've gotten poems published before I'm sure I could contribute one

Cool - anyone know an editor!?
Easy enough find out how pf got on- is not?
Would you mix short stories with poems in one publication?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,706 ✭✭✭Matt Holck

    I don't see why not

what sort of cohesion are we after?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭Antilles

I say set a general theme and give a length limit, and have a mix of poetry and prose.

I'd like to be involved please - although I'm not sure what being involved would entail.

    This thing needs a co-ordinator.

    Any volunteers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭Antilles

Where's the thread for the photography forum's book? We could steal their ideas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭pseudonym1

I'll volunteer to look after the presentation design aspect, if that helps.
My main concern is the editing how practically to do this? - it is a lot to ask of one persons time. So maybe more than one editor
What about setting up a thread and nominate boardsies? - obviously would have to want to do it aswell

And how to effectively communicate with everyone post works without revealing the final product!

This is my brain storming time of morning!

Need to devise a tight plan of action!

    ??????????????????????/

    Who will buy it
    How much RRP
    Devise costings
Maybe - just maybe we could get someone a business to sponser it?
    what channels to go through
Maybe make an e-book - prefer idea of paper myself

Thread posted in PF requesting feedback.
Oh can I suggest one thing ( please don't lynch me) can there be a few happy stories and or endings ?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 714 ✭✭✭Livvie

What form exactly will the project take? Something like a magazine with fiction, factual stories, quizzes etc? I can volunteer for short stories and/or a quiz. Will it be aimed at both men and women? That would be quite novel (no pun intended) because I don't think there are many magazines aimed at both sexes?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether? :) (There you go - barking - a pet section too. :D )

    Thats a great idea!!
But think its a bit off the mark - my original suggestion was to compile works of this forum.

Love the idea of a mag - always dreamed of setting up one when I was younger! Now along with most other dreams - it has gone out the window - queue violin - LOL! :)

Yes but he doesnt like me. :pac: LoL :pac:

Yeah, a coordinator is needed. In addition will there be any profit and will it go to charity ?

I totally misunderstood then. :) I'd like to help but you'd have to give me a task and explain it as I'm not too au fait with this wonderful, but soooo huge, forum. :)

And bear me in mind when you decide to start the mag.

All you'd have to do is write a poem/short story, possibly based on a selected theme.

FWIW, I would rather any proceeds go to charity than it be for profit. I think the photography forum did their's for the Santa Strike Force. I'd be happy with the money going to them again, unless somebody else has a preferred charity.

I think we should set up posts with polls for stuff like this :)

A theme should be decided by poll.

What kind of a poll? A telephone poll, someone from Poland(they have a population of over 50 million) or maybe a poll vaulter? I'm not sure maybe we should just vote between ourselves what do you think?

    Graham Poll?

There will be a lot of organising if this is going to happen.. In the risk of sounding like a kill joy can I suggest keep the witty quips to vms so as not to detract from the information in thread.

Also have never read a selection of short stories or poems on a theme - Id say keep it to a certain level of taste that will be commercially viable!

Going to set up polls now (to record peoples choices)- also date for subbmissions needs discussed - any suggestions there!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭pseudonym1

    Poll set up! :)

Since it's coming into spring the theme could be LIFE.

    Content:
Prose: submissions up to 2500 words, no content restrictions*
Poetry: submissions up to 10 stanzas, no style restrictions.

Given its progeny - Boards - no lewd content will be allowed.
Prose submissions should adhere to the following general styles

    Adult: Fiction, non-fiction (feature/commentary), non-fiction (news).
    Childrens: Fiction, non-fiction, educational/civic.
    Gender base: Equal where possible
Exceptions: By committee decision (moral, ethical, alternative).
Volume: 12-16 finished examples of both prose and poetry.

    Delivery:
There should be an editorial of no more than 5 people. 3 from prose background, 2 from poetry, with one person holding a chair/casting position. Production team of 3 - arrangement/sub-editing/graphics.

    Timeline:
Submissions to be received by Feb 27 2009.
PR for demand assessment through March.
Review, selection, and editorial by Mar 27.
    Product placement April 15+
Publication by Apr 30 (see Boards photographers for information).

Submission process: Criteria, feedback, policy, storage.

    Budget (and source):

Production: (by committee consultation as largely cost driven) - Illustrations? Cover Art? Hardback/softcover? Landscape or portrait? Paper weight? Mono/n-colour? Dimensions?

Mojo, I'd prefer higher word limit than 2500. Also, I think it would be better to keep away from "news". I've no interest in reading editorials or news in a creative writing book.

Edit: Oh, and I like the theme of "Life". It is vague enough that everybody should be able to write something on the topic without being too constrained.

Don't be so pessimistic, you could easily write something for this.

Except in extraordinarily rare circumstances, if something can't be said without lewdness, then it doesn't need to be said.

I've read some of your stuff in this forum, Busted Flush, and I've no doubt that you could work around this restriction to say whatever you want to say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭pseudonym1

Excellent well thought out post mojomaker!

Who wishes to volunteer for editing duty!?

    Perhaps then do a poll?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,929 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

THe project will require team members with a background (or flair) in subbing, arrangement, reviewing & proofreading, and there needs to be a selection commitee to accept and review the submissions.

In addition the project would need someone prepared to negotiate any suppliers and keep an eye on the budget and the expenditure.

In the editorial positions there would be a lot of work and shouldn't be taken lightly! The team would probably need to meet up reasonably frequently throughout the timeline - at least fortnightly initially, perhaps more regularly as it comes to a close.

So... I am guessing this is dead? Lots of creative sparks but nobody wants to organise it :)
