So what does everyone make of it?
Personally I think the graphic and logo are disgusting, I hate the name, It's just like TV3+1/2 with Xpose and Friends on half an hour after they are on TV3...

I know it's all new so there is going to be kinks but it looks rushed.
I just hope TV3 sort it out and don't just saturate it with repeats of Corrie and Emmerdale.

It was said in the media that it wasn't just gonna be reruns of what TV3 shows, but it also said the budget was cut for the station, so it doesn't fill me with confidence.

Only upside to 3e is that its gonna show a few series from the beginning again like sopranos, but overall nothing new.

To be honest that's the only reason I tune in to that station.

It's nearly in the middle of the screen on my 4:3 set :D

"3e" sounds like a classroom...or the cost of production. It's still lost on the Sky EPG, so I'll watch it as much as I watched Channel 6!

    +1

I watched CSI on it earlier and the logo ended up causing me to switch off - FAR too intrusive.

What was wrong with the name "Channel 6" anyways (apart from earlier debates when it launched as to why they skipped "Channel 5") ?

3e implies "TV3 with a few extra bits", and considering that most of TV3 is either ITV/UTV stuff broadcast 30 seconds earlier, or programmes about "the nation's" dogs or "the nation's" kids' habits without highlighting that they actually mean a completely different nation I don't see the point of TV3 having a second channel AT ALL.....

If they bundled a lot of the decent programmes - series, not irrelevant and pointless UK game-shows and documentaries - and their few home-produced programmes, they might manage to make one decent channel out of the two (even allowing for the vacuous diva and "celebrity" rubbish like Xpose, etc, or the pointless crap like "the nation's favourite fitness videos" - which, for a change, I think was actually THIS nation, but I didn't stick around to find out!)

They could then do a GENUINE "TV3+1", which apart from confusing Tommy Tiernan even more, might actually have a purpose!

Or - and how's this for a clever name "TV3 x 2" ? It equals "6", and it implies "second time around"....

i think its a ****ing disgrace. Emmerdale on channel 6. I never thought i'd see the day. It used to be the only hope for irish tv and now its been raped by conservatives. And whats gonna happen to all the awesome presenters that used to be on the channel? No more Michelle Doherty (RAGE)... no more can be said. Im pissed off. Lets make a petition NOW. NoDisco style.

To be fair, 6 was almost ALWAYS a "seen it somewhere else, ages ago" channel - in many cases it was laughable watching them hype shows and introduce characters during promos when everyone knew them off by heart.

If it does turn into a straightforward TV3+1 channel, then I'd reckon it'll mean that it'll be partially an improvement since you'll only have seen Corrie or EastEnders an hour beforehand, rather than SATC or Friends 10 years ago.

NightShift & DayShift, and Michelle Doherty will be a bit of a loss alright.....I wonder if there's any chance they'd ditch the "celeb gossip" and "fashion" programmes and give the slot to her to do something worthwhile with ?

MD introducing music instead of LK hyping up "someone down the street from David Beckham heard from someone across the road that the former nanny of the boyfriend of their kids daughter bought a new pair of shoes!"

Oh really, a petition? C'mon. Get a grip!

The reason that the current changes are being made is the same reason TV3 could buy Channel 6 for a pittance: NOBODY WATCHED CHANNEL 6!

I mean nobody. I'm studying media as part of my college course and whenever Channel 6 came up, a few giggles could be heard. Not only did Channel 6 try to appeal to the saturated young viewer market, they failed miserably in going so and failed to gain even double digits in the Irish younger viewer numbers once. The channel was going nowhere, fast.

3e will grow gradually. I don't know what people were expecting at it's (notably) low-key launch stage. They have plans to replace the presented shows in the coming months. The 6 Line-up was not working at all. Heck, whenever I watched it I just got annoying at some guy that done (failed?) and Arts degree and though the joks and puns he made when introducing songs were funny. Their presented shows were not live either.

The Irish TV Station market is too small to have another "big player". Anybody expecting 6/3e to be anything great is really expecting too much.

There are some other little nuggets in there too. They are repeating the Sopranos, Brotherhood (on Sunday nights) is pretty good, and they had the Wire at one stage too.

Until they get channel put next to TV3 on the sky EPG,it will never take off or build among Sky Digital viewers. If it is right beside tv3 people will be more likely to click onto it.

No 3e will die a slow death. Too low key to be honest. They are trying far to hard to make it out as though it is a credible extra channel from TV3, TV3 is about to die a slow death TBH.

The shows that the axed won't be replaced. Ben Frow has already stated that 3e has less money then the launch of C6.

You are right about Popscene, Quiz6 and NightShift all needed to be live (I think Quiz6 was live but it need to have a different format).

I beleive that given the right funding a new Irish Channel could emerge. And take on the role of TV3.

I am sure you know that TV3 make 60million a year and make feck all.

The regulator should have let C6 die, told TV3 that the 10million that they need for channel 6 should be used to make some quality prime time TV.

None of the youth channels get double digits in the youth market.

Never expected it just thought it was a better choice then 3e TBH.

TV3 are being very clever getting this channel together before DTT goes live. Channel4 > E4 / TV3 > 3e....i'm guessing thats how they picked the name.
This will be the Irish ITV2 where spin-off shows will be shown eg. Xtra Factor, Im a Celeb... NOW!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

got rid of Nightshift, the only decent original programme they had, so i won't be watching 3e.

if i want to see re-runs of Friends and Fraiser, i'm sure i'll catch them on the other 50 channels doing the exact same thing for the last 5 years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Linku

They should have modelled it more after E4 than ITV2 I think, and given it a bit of personality. All they did was move shows around between the two stations, what on earth is the point in showing Friends on TV3? It was bad enough that Channel 6 showed Friends in primetime already.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 270 ✭✭Full_Circle

I just think the name itself is hedious. When you say it, it sounds like your just stretching out the name "Threeeeeeee". But then again, maybe thats the point?! :pac:

It would be a terrible shame if they just made it a repeats or extras only channel (and contrary to what a lot of people think, they DID have a good few shows that hadnt been broadcast on any other channel!).

I agree with the previous poster that it would be better modelled after E4 rather than ITV2. They may still succeed in giving it an individual personality, in time *crosses fingers in vain hope*

i read in the paper over the week (mayb herald or indo??) that it was being moddeled on E4....

TBH as long as its stuck down on ch 182 on the sky EPG its not going to succeed. It needs to be moved up a lot higher (105 is free and so is 113 - 118/119)

if i can find a link to the paper which said it was based on E4 ill post it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Linku

If they're trying to model it after E4 they're doing a terrible job. E4 is one of the only stations with a personality, it's a bit cheeky, they take the mick out of themselves sometimes. Pretty sure TV3 take showing "hit US shows such as Friends" seriously. 3E is one of the most generic stations I've ever seen. Their idents look like they were whipped up in 5 minutes to test out some software, and not something that any station should ever consider using.

And nothing on E4 is as bad as the ITV2 garbage that's going to be all over the station. And what's already on the station. I actually can't fathom how they think their going to do well with all these shows that ended long ago. Two hours of Sex and the City a night? It's like they just forget that anyone who has 3e, already has E4, Paramount, and TV3 (they repeat shows 30 mins or an hour later!)

so channel 6 is gone now and were left with 3e?

will they have the same listings as channel6 or is it like a complete revamp of the channel?

C6 is gone. It's replacement 3e. The currently schedule is a mix between C6 shows and TV3 repeats. They axed most of the original Irish programming that made C6 even a tiny bit distinctive.

I am guessing that when the licences for shows such as Seinfeld, The Wire, 24, CSI and other repeats they will not renew them.

However they will keep the more popular shows such as Heroes, Fringe, Terminator, Dexter while replacing other C6 shows with TV3 repeats and ITV extra style shows.

I think it is the addition of Xpose and the fact that they are now just showing shows that are running out of life from their license, in other "we must show everything we buy even and make sure we have a repeat license until it runs out" It will be interesting to see how their first month as 3E has gone.

3e are clearly not confident in their scheduling. Listings in different newspapers claim that they broadcast either 'The Eleventh Hour' or 'Doctor Who' at 16:05 weekdays.

I'd love to know how anyone working for the BCI can claim they are a regulator, but I suppose they would mention the xpose repeat....

Axed by TV3 in December. The schedule was supposed to be in addition to TV3's schedule but TV3 have run into problems with it as they must have felt that they would have doubled Channel 6's audience of 0.9% however Emmerdale couldn't do it, they have not lost viewers. Hence the changes in schedule nearly every week since the changed name.

So what do people think? Just In Treatment and a bit of a gamble with Jimmy Kimmel is the only talking point.

It is still a case of not knowing what to do with the station. A case of keeping some and getting rid of others, lack of professionalism in TV3 IMO, they really don't know the market.

They are basically hoping that the TV3 stalwarts will support 3e i.e. Coronation Street's and All Saint's repeats may help the channel. I think it is good that they have chosen to go with a late night chat show from the states however Jay Leno, David Letterman or Conan O'Brien would have been better.

Judge Maria Lopez straight after an hour of Judge Judy on TV3???? it also breaks away from C6's Teeny-bopper market repeats. Nice to see they are slowly getting the message that Xpose isn't a worthwhile TV show. I give it one more month in the 17:00 slot before going completely.

Both Malcolm in the Middle and Everyone Hates Chris are great repeaters for the 6pm slot. (I give them one month before being put on at that time).

Far too much CSI newer Episodes will be on both Living and RTE TWO at the same time as older ones on 3E.

I think that In Treatment is badly scheduled against Nightly News unless they are planning to show an omnibus edition each weekend. And if their treatment of In Treatment is anything like Dexter fans will be disappointed. RTÉ didn't take the show as the felt they couldn't run it over the 5 nights required, 3e will have to be for the long haul with this show.

But sure we shall see how it works out for them.

Just to correct my last post. Jay Leno has finished with his show AFAIK and Jimmy Kimmel has taken over from Conan. I still think Conan would have been a better option.

I think she freelances. I am surprised she didn't go back to work for www.mitv.ie since the produced Night Shift in its early days.

I would give them a chance but they keep changing the schedule and while their plan is to increase viewers they have yet to achieve this. I mean I gave C6 a chance.

I like Malcolm, and if you had read my post you would have seen that I agree with the show being repeated weekdays on 3e. I keep meaning to get to Buffy. As for Coronation Street ! good god, what a waste of time.

    3e is 3 years old.
