New €2 Coin

Brussels is releasing a new €2 coin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the euro. Can't believe how quickly those 10 years went but hey.
Im betting that the new design, although democratically voted for by over 100,000 EU citizens, will face some hassle from the feminist brigade over the depiction of a man on the rear:pac:

10 years? Yeah but we didn't start using it until 2002.

Did the guy who designed it win a prize or anything?

Because if that kind of drawing is winning prizes, I could soon be a millionaire.

    Yawn - O - Rama I'm afraid.

I kind of like the match stick man one, kind of reminds me of a cave painting.

Like the old 50p coins from 1988!

    Think that's the point.

Although it's possible that 100,000 people just got drunk and voted for the one that looked kind of funny.

Yeah but the currency existed before it was in our pockets.

Kinda reminds me of the famous MSPaint First Sexual Experience thread.

(Where is that anyway? Searched but I couldn't find it.)

If that drawing had been in that thread what do you think the story behind it would be?

Yeah, we didn't start using it untill 2002, but believe it or not, some countries have been using it since 1998!!

it looks like it was drawn by a two year old.

Something involving a novelty euro sign being inserted where it wasn't designed to go perhaps?

I don't believe it. No way!

(actually I don't believe it because 1999 was the first use of it. ;))

I see no willy, though I suspect most real feminists have better things to do than complain about a missing willy man on money.

Do you think the other designers are a bit pissed off? Some of the designs look like a lot of work went into them.

The one that won looks like some guy got drunk, saw the MS paint thread, and decided to enter.

    I like it.

Come on lads, own up, which one of you did it?

    I lol'd

    Also wtf, there's a website called coinnews.net - That's just...

i think you mean 1998 was when the Euro was introduced, but only started being used normally in 2002..

    Yeah, that's right.

It was first used anywhere as notes and coins in Jan 2002, before that (since 98) it was used in stock markets and accounting. We have indeed been using it since 1998.

I remember calling it the EMU in my first year, first term Economics essay in 1998. We were locked in to it at that stage.

They are actually a funny bunch when it comes to coins... I remember genuine concerns being raised when the 5p coin was made smaller in the 90s. The image of the bull was reversed which was taken by some to mean it was turning it's back on Irish feminism.

    Who voted in this?

The idiots picked the worst design!

Can we all stop this silly discussion about currency and commerce and whatnot and get back to the important topic - why the stick man on the new coin has no willy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

There's already a willy on the other side of the coin.

They should melt down 2 £1 coins to make the €2 ones - then at least they'll have a use for Sterling.

Have they? I understand all the participating EU countries adopted it at various times post Jan 1st 2002, like we did.

And a good thing we did too, can you imagine how the Punt would have fared in the current crisis
