Starting Strength - Lose Fat?

I had been planning on starting strength after christmas (been reading it over xmas), strength was always my goal. But now I want to lose some body fat, so I'm counting my calories and making sure I've a calorific deficit. Trying to eat healthy and clean as well.

I've been lifting for a long time, but recently started taking it more seriously.
So, seeing as starting strength is kinda orientated around making gains and having a calorific surplus, I was wondering is there any point me starting it? Or should I just start it anyway and expect less / no gains? I would be doing cardio on the in between days as well.

    Thanks.
