Are you good with your money?

I've been doing a bit more thinking over the last few days about the financial side of my life, and realised that i'm pretty god damn careless with my money in general. I'm good at doing things like researching certain products online etc before purchasing, but jesus when I think about it, I have p1ssed away the bones of 15k in the last 2 years since I finished college.

Only recently I had to move home for a bit because of an OP as I didn't want to pay rent for the 2 months I was out of work, so that was a decent financial decision. Paid off my car loan 1 year early a few weeks back, that was another. Set up two new savings accounts with better interest rates, that was another, but when I even begin to add up what i've spent on nights out, hardware i've barely used, and general spending like bottles of water, sandwiches etc, its actually shocking what I go through for no good reason.

I could go on and on.

How are the good folk of AH with their monies?

I'm good with other people's money, I can spend it really quickly

    Very good.

I save weekly for things like car insurance, tax, holidays, etc, and have managed to save a pretty large amount of money since I started working in September.

Having said that, I don't deny myself anything and I could save a lot more if I stopped buying shoes, dresses and lucozade!

    I reckon I'm pretty good!(for a student)..

I'm a first years student in College. I haven't had a job for over 11 months now and I'm doing fine! I had planned on quitting my job for a while before, which really helped me save up. I needed to quit for the L.C!
But since then, I haven't had to go looking for money of my parents, or social welfare or anything like that! (Didn't win the Lotto either :( ) And I haven't been really sacrificing nights out. I'm not the type who goes out every night of the week anyway, however I've still been to enjoy myself, as per usual - even paid for my own holidays with friends and my ticket to ****** last year.

I know it's not gonna last forever though (not much longer either), and I've been trying to find a job since September, however I'm glad I could save up when I did, it really helped.

So yeah, I think I am good with my money.

    U.

But in saying that, i've done very well out of the money i get working part time as i'm a student seeing as i was use dto full time wages for a few years

I'm terrible with money. I've also spent about 15k in about a year and a half but on nights out alone. I'm a student, so it could be worse. I'm absolutely broke right now. Only got e6.47c to my name :D.

New Years resolution: Stop drinking.... with that said; I went out last night. Ooops.

I wish I could save money but I always have friends that are up to something and I'd have to go out with them.
I left my part-time job in November there; bad choice considering that I'm screaming out for money for food etc :P.

Might do a spot of busking.

I save a bit of money but I do waste it on stuff I never use or on lunches when I could easily make my own for much cheaper. So i'm good with money but would be better if I wasn't lazy or stupid.

    And you a student?

Times have changed since my day !

Good at handing it out. Keeping it for myself is my downfall. And nights out.

Yes , but it means a healthy economy , and very little left in your wallet / purse.:(

I'm similar in that i've probably averaged spending €700-800 per month on going out over the past 18 months. The difference being that i work full time, so fair play for p1ssing that much away as a student! :pac:

Pretty good, or at least i try to be. I generally don't buy useless crap but wish i could save a bit more.

terrible, somedays ill somehow spend 40 euro and only remember buying my student lunch..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭Show_me_Safety

im pretty good, i plan ahead and know where it has to go.
cigarettes and lunches at work are killer tho.

once the rent is paid, the bills are paid and money is put into my saving accounts i stop worrying about it. i dont think about how much i have, i get stressed out about it too easily!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

depends really. good in that im a student with no help thats managed to go on two holidays last year and move out into fairly decent rented accomodation.
bad in that if i *really* tried, rather than working my ass off with extra hours, i could stop buying lunches/magazines/bottled water/pointless crap and actually have some spare cash after bills!
    oh well :)

    I'm woeful.

Had a fantastic, cheap night out last night though. I might have turned over a new leaf!

I intend on ending the month with enough left over to pay my car tax. I won't hold my breath though.

That said, I don't owe anything on the credit card, and everything else is covered for the month.

I used to spend over my means - paying off loans and credit card, but I managed to clear these and got a mortgage.

I am more careful in what I spend my money on now.

I'm disgustingly sensible with my money. I convert everything to diamonds and stick them in my teeth.

I used not be so good, then I realised I'd better get me skates on and save up money so I can go get a mortage and get into bigger debt than I've ever been in my life*

*But not just yet. Bring on the crash.

I know i'm in the same boat, get paid the 1st of every month. December however I got it on the 23rd, so initially you feel loaded but 2 weeks later its like 'Uh oh'! The only good thing this year was that throughout 2008 I was giving my mum 20 euro a week for a christmas club, so got 1k back. Used that to renew my car insurance and tax which were both up last week!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 699 ✭✭✭LeahBaby

I'm Fantastic with money. I sit down once a week and budget and keep re-budgeting every week. Makes sure everything is covered and I budget a certain amount of Leah money so it's not hard to keep on track!!

Havent a penny to my name and still manage to buy crap via credit cards. Problem is now solved as they are maxed now.

Most recent purchase - a wig. A fcuking wig from the states that i will never put on my head. I look like a tranny in it.

Owe 37k in loans and credit cards and i dont even have a mortgage.

So to answer the question no but, i am great at getting loans and spending them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I haven't been in the black since I was 18... Nothing to show for it but loans, a clapped out car and memories...

    Holy dogsh1t Batman! 37k!?

I'm struggling to even use my imagination as to how I could get in that much debt (without a mortgage).

    Hookers and coke?

I owe a few hundred on my CC (which i'll pay off over the next few weeks) but thats about it. No loans or rent to pay off at the min, so gonna try and safe a shedload over the next few months.

I'm a girl so i dont need hookers i can get it for free and i dont do drugs so no its not that.

Yeah i dunno. I have a car which cost 10500 but the rest i cant account for. No holidays.

For a while i was in serious trouble when it was just me and my son i was living on loans i.e getting loans to pay rent, clear off bills i hadnt paid, just couldnt afford to live. But they gave it to me so easily i found myself getting loans for everything, even things like back to school the uniforms and books, birthdays and not to mention christmas. Think i spent 4k over christmas.

I have 3 credit cards and 4 loans. Fcukers giving me money all de time.

Not really tbh. Generally i dont worry about these things. I normally just get another loan if the pressure gets too much :o

Just put my car up for sale but i doubt it will sell anyway. I'll think of something, i always do.

I am quite good with my money -- I think it's because when I was a kid, I used to buy my own Christmas gifts for other people so I'd have to save up the money I got all year.

So there you have it . . . if you want your child to be good with money, force them to pay for their own stuff. :D

No I did the opposite. I enjoyed my money back then and i'm paying for it now, rather than pay for it now and reap the rewards in later life.

What age is your son? If he is older than 5, might be an idea to get him job hunting. :pac:

/tip for shifting your car quicker: If you haven't already done so, put it on adverts.ie (free), put it on Carzone.ie (costs a few quid). Lots of pics and as much info as possible. Put links to your ad in your sig. You'd stand a much better chance of moving it on! How much is the car btw? If it has a decent value then your 37k may not look so bad. 37k in the red (with no mortgage) I would imagine is quite a bit higher than the average debt figure. I'm open to correction though. :)

Hes 8, fine strapping lad with hands like shovels. But unless Sony take on 8 year olds hes having none of it, he wants to be a games creator. No manual labour for this boy.

Car is up on adverts thanks :)
