Anyone had the chance to see this bad boy yet?. Overall plot is the story of the life of an impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik, who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire? wins, and is then suspected of cheating.

Very very good film and a very enjoyable watch, excellent story line to it.

Saw it a few days ago, really didn't think I'd like it.I'm a big horror fan so normally this type of film just doesn't appeal to me, but because it was Boyle thought I'd give it a shot and was pleasantly suprised.I was expecting some type of fairy tale feel good movie and I have to admit its actually fairly dark, reminded me of city of god in parts.Think its definately one of Boyles best movies. The shots are amazing in the movie and although it does get kind of schmaltsy half way through the story and characters are very believable. It also portrays what I felt was a realistic vision of India(harsh) and slightly disturbing in parts.I'd highly recommend this film to everyone, its obviously not as good as the Dark Knight but its a close second or third to it.(Either I'm getting soppy in my old age or its actually great).

Where have you guys been able to see this movie? All I can find is previews in a few of the UCIs here in Dublin. On the Cineworld website it has the release date of 09/01 but it's not available to book yet.

Loved the book, Q&A, so really exicted to see this!!

The book was only okay imo. Nice easy read but the writing style was very simple and many of the sub-plots were silly and badly written. The film is so much better and bears very little resemblance to the book. They just used the basic concept. It's an excellent screenplay.

This movie is excellent. It's in the top 50 on IMDB and deservedly so! There is unlikely to be many, if any, better movies this year. icon14.gificon14.gificon14.gificon14.gificon14.gif

Saw this tonight and for the most part found it extremely refreshing viewing. On a purely technical basis, it is definitely the most exhilarating film I've seen in a good few months. The editing, cinematography and soundtrack create an extraordinary atmosphere, especially in the first half. Although I haven't been to India myself, a few friends who were over in the summer couldn't get over the constant madness and excitement on the street, and I really think that some of the scenes capture a really effective sense of utter chaos with the fast cuts, huge amounts of colour and the constant alterations in speed and camera techniques. Loved the soundtrack too, always working well with the sequences and giving everything a pretty urgent edge (montage on the train was a great sequence, I thought, along
with the final question: that damn Millionaire theme is intense!
    ).

Story was also entertaining: simple, but engaging. As a previous poster said, it can be pretty dark at times. But it is a very human story, and the main character definitely has the underdog appeal factor going for him. It is a very crowd pleasing story, but I wouldn't consider the love story or anything to be a weak point here: it works because of likable characters, and feels natural part of the overall story. Yes, the ending is cliched and manipulative, but it is a nice feel good ending which is welcome when its done right like it is here.

Overall a very enjoyable experience. Story may not be original or anything you haven't seen before, but it is a good one, and technically a marvel - Danny Boyle is definitely a fantastic visual and audio director as he has proven again and again. Kudos to the Who Wants to be a Millionaire host too - ten times more entertaining (a remarkable ability to compress multi-syllable words into a single recognisable sound) and ten times seedier (damn that earring) than Chris Tarrant will ever be.

Am glad to hear this, i didn't like the book either. Was sick of it book by the time I finished it, thought it was just silly. :pac: I'd ruled out going to see the film on that basis but having heard the feedback on the film here I might just give it a chance!

True, it's really a great movie. The story's very original. I'm sure there maybe movies like it but I've never seen one. It's not often an arty film like that progresses with such pace and excitement imo.

Four Golden Globe awards for the movie:
    Best Film
    Best Director
    Best Screenplay
    Best Music

This is a must see fantastic movie. Saw it on saturday and cant wait to see it again next sat or sun.

Don't miss the credits in the end, really good and different than anything you have seen before. Loved the bollywood style dance :) Great music.

All the characters are good. Millionaire host was brilliant.

I would say - feel good movie of the year.

I loved it. Like some others, I thought it would be all very upbeat, but was surprised how dark it is in parts. The millionaire host was terrific, a real sleazebag, and the end credits were a great nod to Bollywood. Overall, its a great story of hope and determination

someone said it was kind of like city of god and it was.. not quite on the level of city of god but still brilliant. when the stories started being told i was hopin it wouldn't just be a series of seperate stories but instead it's all linked so well. kind of like his life through a series of questions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭djsupreme

One of the best movies I've seen in years. Everything from the cinematography, to the score. And I loved the way they tell his story through the quiz questions.

And an amazing performance from the main lead. Funny to think the only other acting role he has had was as the geek in Skins.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 969 ✭✭✭sunzz

supreme was going to say that to.
Onwar was his name in skins and while he was good at playing his part in that he was just on another level here, thought it was utterly fantastic myself and that last question made me giggle hard, all the times he could of etc etc .....

dont wanna give anything away, but a must see.

I watched this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. You know I wouldn't have spotted Danny Boyle in it in a million years if I didn't know going in that he was the director.

There was one particular part of the cinematography that I really liked. They used tilt-shift on some of the wide shots so it made things look like minatures even though the were shot on location. This was mainly done with the more touristy images of India which I thought was great as it was suggesting that these parts belong in a snowglobe and are somehow unreal, whereas the real India is in the slums and the streets.

An example of what I mean.

I seriously doubt the Indian Tourist board are too happy about it though, it paints a grim picture of past and present.

they didn't go by the rules of the who wants to be millionaire, they never showed the board to show how questions he had left, in indian money, even, and kept saying he would lose everything rather then winning in steps.

i guess it wouldn't motivate him to stay to the end

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

The dancing is traditional for a Bollywood movie.

Saw the film tonight and thought it was excellent. 10/10.

Well the rules could be slightly different in India (I know they're totally different in the US).
Anyway he was only there to get her attention so he would have kept answering anyway, the money was no incentive.

watched this yesterday, enjoyed it but much preferred the story line in the book to be honest

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kraggy

It's a mechanism to show how far Jamal has come even though he took the honest route through life, has been a good person etc.
The brother has a realisation that he has taken the wrong route in life and wishes to make ammends by providing for the Latika's escape while paying the ultimate sacrifice.
    .

That was my take on it anyway.

Have to say, I'm going to go and see this a second and third time in the cinema. Have not been so impressed by a film in such a long time. Yes some things were convenient, but I've not seen a film shot so beautifully in ages. The child actors were brilliant as were the older actors. There was brilliant tension towards the end and the ending was nice but not pukey.

Also, parts of the fast paced scenes reminded me somehow of Run Lola Run. Like a compelling music video.

Can't wait for next weekend to go and see this again.

And I'm already planning my trip to India. Some of the scenery in the film was stunning.

I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night, and I thought it was an absolutely brilliant film. Like the other two posters I don't think it was a perfect film, but I don't think it was far off. I think the ending was a bit rushed, in particular from when the Millionaire TV show ends, onwards. The black comedy throughout the film was at times hilarious (
when Jamal jumps out of the toilet
), and while overall Jamal had a very unfortunate childhood, it all becomes wrapped up (
when he gets rich quick and gets to be with his love
    ), nicely.

    SPOILER:
I must say that I think that Salim's death is understandable, when he sees how his brother's life will be changing in comparison to the corrupt way he has made his living. He also knocks off Javed to aid his brothers cause, naturally he won't be let walk out of the house by all Javed's cronies.

Slumdog is definitely a film that tops all of the films of the last six months.

I agree that it is a very good film but as you say it does seem rushed towards the end and I personally find the story for the brother was a cop-out for lack of other idea's.

Like I said very good film but certainly not amazing or the perfect film like it was portrayed on today fm this morning....

Agree 100% but it is a Danny Boyle movie so it's to be expected. Loved the MIA track, heard it while ago in a club over the Christmas and didn't know the name of it.

That's the tagline of the movie, which I thought was quite misleading. I was expecting a full on comedy but it's anything but.
