played Heath yesterday. Brutal consistency, seem to only strike the ball when I've an awkward stance to occupy my mind, rather than my swing.

    Score? The weather was pleasant

I don't actually know, didn't do a tally. Scratches hither and tither. I might get the card from the car tomorrow and revert.

First competition of the year yesterday. 41pts for a +7 76 (course shortened to a par 69). Clean and place so nothing to write home about. Still, only bought my first set of golf clubs in Sept 07 and joined a club in January last year so not bad progress for a year or so. Sixth time in the mid-70s. Objective is to get to single figure handicap this year. One must be optimistic... or deluded!!!

Took me until mid-November to shoot under my handicap in 2008.... 4 days (2 rounds) into 2009 and I've done it twice!

Had 38 points today (+2 gross off 4) in a singles competition (we also had a lefties v rights thing going on, us lefties won). Irons were really moderate but not too destructive and managed to have a few scrambles... putting only ok too).

38 points also yesterday in a social fourball (won 6&5 and I promptly bogeyed the next 3 holes but finished with a birdie on 18)

First round of 2009 on friday, 40pts off 15 to take first place in open comptition in waterford castle gc. Struck ball only alright but got up and down 8 out of nine attempts, with miricale up and down on eighteen for par to win. Played today and struck ball amazingly well but missed all up and down attempts and several makable putts, score 32pts.Target for 2009 is to get to 10 handicap.

Was supposed to play in the Winter Mondays last monday @ Carton House but got frosted off. Played Portmarnock with 3 buddies instead.
    33PTS
    Playing off 12
    par 71
    86 gross
Happy enough considering it was my first time playing there and that
we had driven from north cork to play Carton house. When that got frosted off we rang Portmarnock & got a tee time. Left Carton House @ 11.15 and headed for the links!! When we got there we had time to Park the car, on with the golf shoes and bombs away down the first:-) I hate rushing onto the first tee but we were determined to get a game somewhere after the drive. Nice track though I must say.

Played my first golf since October yesterday. I was running late and my partners had already teed up by the time i got there. Grabbed a tee, a ball and a driver, had one practice swing and hit... Blocked it straight right and out of bounds! I then went on to knock 3 of my first 4 drives OOB and on the other hole i shanked it and then 3 putted.

Stood on the 5th tee like a British Eurovision song contest contestant... nul pois!:o

It was only a 12 holer but managed 16 points from the remaining 8 holes, playing some decent stuff with just 2 shots. Despite the calamity golf at the start and the wet and the cold, it was great to be back out again. Roll on this weekend and the rest of '09.

Played 12 hole singles competition yesterday. 25 points with 2 shots. Drove well and hit irons really bad. Short game was not bad though.

Grrrr 16points for 18holes off of 16. Very frustrating day. 5 par 3's not a single point on any of them!!!

My form is shot to pieces recently, gone from consistently scoring 35ish to scoring high teens and low 20's. I dont know whats causing it really, it would appear to be my irons but I dont feel like I'm playing them particularly badly. Driving straight and actually putting quite well for a change, my short stuff around the green is going quite well so it can really only be my irons. Here's hoping my G10's make a difference when they arrive.

    Ian

Hadent played much this year as was working away from home for 6 months. Started playing regularly about October and its all starting to come together. Really enjoying the game at the moment.

Played on sunday and had 23 points for 9 holes of 21. Total bandit at the moment but with placing every where its hard to be cut. Considering i had 3 lip outs and put a drive OOB i could have scored a lot more. Looking forward to getting the HC down hoping for about 15 by the end of the year.

Really looking forward to the summer might get to see the ball run again :).

    Grrrr

Played yesterday and was about as consistent as a blind monkey. Because of competitions everyone starts on the 5th on a Saturday. For me taking a driver on the 5th is risky as it brings all the trouble into play. So out with the 3 wood. Swing and the ball flies all of about 6 inches, rolls another 2 yards. I'm still physically on the tee box. Ok Ok deep breaths. 3 wood again. Swing and the ball flies much further than the last one, all of about 2 yards and runs another 3 yards. Ok Ok deep breaths deep breaths. 4 iron, cream it leaving myself about an 8 iron in. Catch the 8iron sweet and I've a chance of a score. First put not too bad, was 30+ feet away but leave myself the always tricky 4footer. I hit it and it just doesn't turn and the ball stops 2inches beyond the hole. Scratch!!!

Next up the index 2 par 4 6th. I calm myself down on the Tee box and proceed to par this and the next one while striking the ball very well.

Next up the 8th Good drive, 5 wood for the second shot and just pull it a little right, but still fine sitting in the semi rough. Sand wedge from about 20feet off the green, Some how manage to send it all the way over the green and over some hedges leaving me 30feet off the green. SW again and I take half the course with me and send the ball into the hedge. Find ball but dont bother dropping out as I'd need to pitch in for a point. Scratch!

135yard par 3 9th. Hit the 6 and am about 5 yards short of the flag but just catch the bunker. Not too bad until i get up there and find that I am about 2 inches away from the lip. So chip it out but litterally only get it to travel 2-3feet and nearly break my wrists in the process. Two puts and i get a bogey. 5holes played and I have 8 points, not good!

Then desaster after desaster I scratch 10 through 13!

So not in the best mood I come onto the 14th tee box. I cream my driver and leave myself about 210-220yards. Since I have no score card to worry about I decide to go for the green, its the absolute limit of my 3 wood range. I cream it but am about 10yards short, see the ball land and roll into where there's a gap between the rough, but even if i dont find the gap the ball will just be in the edge of the rough. Get down there and neither myself or my playing parthner can find my ball for love nor money. GRRR Scratch! So after 5 holes I had 8 points, now after 10holes I still have 8 points!

15th I go to my bag and pull out a Pro V1 (been playing with Callaway HX Hot Bites). Swinging like a mad man I cream my driver into the steaked trees area, I take my free drop and play an 8 iron in but come up short. Chip on well with a SW and hole a 12footer for par.

Finally on the 16th (short par 5) I have the honour! Slice my driver slightly but I am fine as I'm on the ladies Tee Box on the 15th. I take 5wood and am pin high but slightly to the right of the green, a poor chip puts me to the left of the green. A decent chip leaves me a 3 foot put which i make for par.

17th a nice 140yard par 3 over water. I get there with my 7iron but generate so much backspin I nearly end up in the water! There is just enough room for me to stand to take my putt (i'm just off the green) Roll it to within 6 inches and tap in for par.

The 18th will be our last hole as we both decide to call it quits without playing 1-4. I take out the driver and give it absolutely everything I have leaving myself 65yards (i usually have 100-110 yards left on this hole). I take sand wedge an stick it to about 25feet. Poor first put leaves me a trickey 6footer for par. I get the pace right but the line is fractionally off and I lip out! Tap in for Bogey.

    /End Rant

Now call it a conspiricy theory if you like, but my pick up in form coincided with my switch to a pro V1. I played it the last 4 holes and there's not a mark on it. The callaways were cutting up in Sh1te. Me thinks I'll be playing pro V1's from now on!

I hope your next few rounds go better than the first 10holes of mine!

    Regards
    Ian

Just to prove how crazy this game is....
Rusty as hell in the Matchplay...
My next time to pick up the clubs was on Saturday, played nine holes in perfect conditions and was -2 (22 points). Birdies on 4 & 5 from inside 10 ft, missed a chance on 2 from 6ft and on 8 from 4 ft.
And that was only playing moderate stuff really... hit some lovely shots and also hit some poor ones to miss greens with short irons in hand but short game was good on those occasions.

Played Castleknock yesterday and had 30 pts. Couldn't hit the ball out of my way on the front 9 but got it together somewhat coming home. Playing Luttrellstown next week so need to be in better form for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

Our last winter round was yesterday and i finally managed to put something decent together. Too late to pull be back into contention for the overall prize, but shot 1 under par for 12 holes and 27 points.

Drove the ball really well and short game was sharp. A bit like you Licksy i missed birdie putts from 6ft twice and another from about 3 ft!

I did hole a few good savers though for par and also go a fortunate kick off a tree on one hole.

A very encouraging finish to the winter all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

47 points yesterday in modified fourball (take best drive, play singles in from there) as part of winter league. Only average to be honest. Worked well as a pair but left points out there. 37 points on Saturday in singles competition which again was only average. However, my short game was reassuringly solid and driving was ok. Iron play and putting need ongoing work although I'm seeing the regular putting practice begin to pay off. Definitely need to put a bit of time de-rusting my sand play which was chronic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,360 ✭✭✭death1234567

Score = 89, 35 points, no scratches, 5 pars Incl both par 5's. Which is good for me cos I'm not a big hitter.
    - Course = Ougtherard, Galway
    - Handicap = 18
    - Course par = 70 , sss 70.
    - Practice round.

Delighted with it TBH. If my short game was better I'd be down to a Handicap of 15 I'd say.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Mr. Larson

34 points in a 14 hole competition on Saturday playing off 15.

1 Birdie, 6 pars, 6 bogeys, and one infuriating double bogey 4 putt from about 20 feet

After a crap opening 5 holes, I had 25 points on the back 9, had a 10 footer for birdie on the 18th which would have left me level par (gross) for the back 9 and I left it 1.5 feet short.

After just being on mid-term, I played alot of golf last week :)

    -handicap: 5

On Monday, I went to Fota Island in a Junior open, I shot 3 over par with only 1 birdie - I should have had 4 or 5.

Wednesday we had a junior competition in my club, 15 holes, 4 over. Only hit 2 greens! Short game was brilliant, I only had 22 putts I think.

One of my mates was playing his final Winter League round on Friday. I said I'd go around and mark his card for him. It was incredible, he plays off 3 and is on the Ireland boys panel...he shot 7under par for 9 holes! Was immense to experience it. 10 putts! 27 pts for 9 holes.

Hopefully now at Easter, I can get cut a bit, maybe down to 4 for now :)

    14 hole stableford, handicap 23. 19 points, 4 scratches.

First round of the year, blustery.

Opened with a 3 pointer off a brutal drive, the first of four 1 putts today

Lot of driving range golf being played, and I struggled to establish the composure over the ball that I'd have in the range. Felt rushed on my backswing, and no follow through.

finished 3 points, 4 points - tap in birdie on the final hole :D

I don't feel rushed approaching a ball, but once the backswing starts I'm abandoning everything that I'm doing in the range.

Played Montgomerie course today off the white's.
    Had 31pts with 2 scratches.
Delighted :D:D with that for 2 reasons: second game of the year & first time to see/play the course.

Have to admit, it's some track. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Would love to play it again with the greens faster than they were today.

How much was the green fee?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 314 ✭✭Alzar

    We paid 70 euro each.
I normally do not spend that kind of money to play a golf course, but I feel that after playing it, it's is one of the best I've ever played.

Today the greens were very slow to putt on, but on the other hand, very hard to get a bit of "stop" on the ball with the wedge.
My playing partners also commented on this & 2 of them are good single figure players.

Overall, I feel that it's the best 70 euro I've spent in a long time.
Would I like to play it again? Oh God, Yes!!

Scotch Foresomes (Both drive and choose the best one).

37strokes for the front 9 (par 35). With a handicap of 12. The double bogey 10, triple bogey 12, stopped marking card after that! 10th particularly annoying. My partner left me a 65yard shot with a wedge from his drive and i duffed it! The i sent the put about 8foot past the hole. Shocking!

Hopefully playing my first singles competition of the year on Sunday so got in a practice round today. Level par gross off 4 handicap.
Started on the back 9 which is tougher, with a par 3 to start. 6 iron to 5 ft and sank the putt. Birdied the index 1 too, actually I birdied 3 of the 4 par 5's today which was nice.
Longer putts were good but still left too many of them online but short
Short putting was very poor and that's where my mistakes came - 2 3-putts and 2 where I didn't get up and down from missed greens after decent enough chip shots.
Still, nice to play a round with good concentration and was never in trouble really.
Conditions were cool but good, greens were excellent but most of the tees were moved up so hard to read too much into it... roll on the weekend!

Played saturday for the 1st semi competitive round of the year and shot 35 points off 10. Only had 4 points for last 3 holes. which annoyed me......a lot! Played the Sunday in windier conditions and shot 30 points. Crazy wind. Hit Driver, 3wood, 4 iron to the edge of the green (all good solid shots into the wind) on the index 1 hole. The previous day I Hit driver 8 iron to the same green!:D Also on sunday hit a 6 iron 235 yards to about 3 feet.....and missed the putt!

I actually am happy enough with my game although my chipping and putting is about 60% at the moment. (up from about 30% in my match with Hobart last week!) That should improve though once this recession yoke kicks in and I can spend time practising!

1st 18 holer of the year but still placing and l/c/d in rough. Absolute shocker of a front 9, worst I've played in well over a year.

Hopped the driver off the ground on the 1st tee, slapped the ball about 40 yards down to the left and trickled over the OOB line. 3 off the tee - ended up with a 7 footer for a point, didn't even threaten the hole.

Pulled the head off the 2nd drive sent it straight into the sea about 150 yards wide of the fairway. 3 off the tee again missed a12 footer for a point.

Found the rough off 3, left with a SW into the green, bladed it about 40 yards over the green, hopped off the OOB fence and back onto the 4th tee. chipped on and 3 putted, another scratch.

Confidence totally shot now was wondering was I capable of getting a point at all I was that bad. Wellied into the ground again off the 4th tee - swing speed must have been off the charts never swang a club as fast... even messing. Knocked it about 80 yards. Came up short of the green next 2 shots, chipped on, 2 putts from about 5 feet, hallelujah! A point! Playing partners give an ironic cheer...

Pulled tee shot on 6th into the sea, same as on the 2nd hole, it starts way left and hooks about 150 yards out to a splashso far away it can't be seen or heard... I don't even play a 3rd off the tee because it will just be embarassing... Par 3 coming up next anyway so at least I'll have a 9 or 8 iron in my now petrified hands... Par on the Par 3 7th, bogey 8 & 9 grand total of 8 points for the front 9.

Steady the ship with a bogey :o on 10 but scratch 11 and then go on to Par 12, 13, 14, 15 and Birdie 16. Finish bogey bogey with 19 points for the back 9 including a scratch.

What the hell happened on the front 9 I will never know. Confidence totally shot during the front 9 but felt really confident & comfortable for the back 9 and played pretty well... strangest round of Golf I have ever played... very strange indeed... If you offered me 27 points on the 7th tee I'd a snapped the hand off you. Really glad I stuck at it now and I didn't quit after 9 otherwise I would'nt have redeemed myself and I'd be shaking like a s****ing dog on the 1st tee next time I played!

Wellied into the ball off the 4th tee knocked it about 80 yards. Came up short of the green twice more, chipped on, 2 putts, hallelujah! A point!

Pulled tee shot on 6th into the sea, same as second, I don't even play a provisional. Par on 7, bogey 8 & 9 grand total of 8 points for the front 9.

Steady the ship on 10 but scratch 11 and then Par 12, 13, 14, 15 and Birdie 16. Finish bogey bogey with 19 points for the back 9.

What the hell happened on the front 9 I will never know. Confidence totally shot during the front 9 but felt really confident & comfortable for the back 9 and played pretty well... strangest round of Golf I have ever played... Very strange indeed...

Great post we have all been there lol.

First singles competition of the year... wild and windy day with some rain, hail and sleet too but wasn't as bad as I expected it to be other than the strong wind.
Played the first 6 holes ok in +1 and then dumped a 9 iron in the water on 7, a rescue in the water on 8 and a 5 iron in the water on 9 so 2 scratches and one 1-pointer gave me 13 points out.
Played solid on the back with 7 pars and 2 birdies for 22 home and 35 total which wasn't bad considering the crap bit in the middle.
