What's are peoples goals for 2009 then?

Im at a bit of a cross roads now where I have not decided whether to run Dublin Marathon or just focus on the shorter distances(predominantly 5k).

If I run Dublin Id be aiming for sub 3 hours 30 minutes. If I focus on the short stuff Id be looking for a sub 20 5K (and maybe sub 19 depending on how quick I could achieve the former...although after a 21'30 in the Tom Brennan that may be overly ambitious) and a 42 minute 10k.

    What about everyone else?

I'm planning 4 marathons. 3 are definites Connemara, Edinburgh and Dublin...I'd like to do Longford or another Augustish marathon too. It would be amazing if, having completed Dublin in October to have run 5 marathons in 364 days(a day earlier that Dublin 08) and to achieve 5 personal bests. That's the dream. I don't think I'll be getting a personal best in Connemara though, I'm certainly not putting my hopes on it.

I'd love to change my Connemara entry to the Ultra and think about doing that every single day. I only took up running a year and a half ago and I'm not sure I'm ready for an ultra yet, my heart is telling me to go for it my head keeps telling me not to be so silly. :pac:

My marathons are my goals for 09, I'd obviously like to improve my times. I have a few 10k's planned aswell and I'll most likely be doing the race series during the summer but my concentration is on the marathons.

Whats your PB for the marathon mp?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭Woddle

I want to PB in all distances with the marathon being the main priority (sub 3 in September).I want to get a deadly time for the 5K, 18:?? porbably looking at doing this in December. I want to be doing a minimum of 40 miles a week and I would like to consider that a bad week. I want to race in the IMRA and I want to do a few duathlons, first one now looks like Feb 22 and most importantly to establish Boards AC as a club people want to be apart of. And in the Bhaa I no longer want to be seeing the back of Gerard65 and robinph :D

I remember those type of head games quite well, it sounds to me like your ready. If I remember correctly connemara is 60k, its a nice enough course and if you can do a marathon you will do 60k. You know youself your head will fight you all the way, its yours heart that gets you across the line.

I dont think you'll have too much problem going sub 20, you have alot of time with it being the start of the year and all that.
I went from 26:30 in March to 20:07 in 9/10 months and Shels4ever has done something similar, just be consistant with training

i will probabily do cork and dublin as well, and i would love to make a clean sweep and run newry and longford as well
    but that probably wont happen
so relistically i will run connemara for the expierence
and belfast , cork as LSR's
i will try go sub 3 in berlin and maybe have a triumphant run in dublin if i do:D

I hope to run my first marathon (in Berlin) at sub 3.30 and get my 5k down to sub 20min. A bit ambicious but I'll give it a shot.

I too am hoping to run (and finish!) my first marathon (Paris); I'm a really slow runner so I'm very worried that I don't finish within the time limit; sadly I'm not in the same league as all you good runners, but I really enjoy running, so fingers crossed...!:)

I want to break 3 hrs in Boston this year.

I was on target in Dublin until mile 20 and hit the wall badly, crawling home in 3:05:37 (still a 4 mins PB).

Therefore my only real goal for 2009 is to take 5:38 off my marathon time. If I miss out in Boston (a very real option, let's face it), I might give it another go in Longford. After that, who knows. Somehow I lost my appetite for Dublin after suffering up that hill towards Fosters Avenue.

I'm even sacrificing this year's Connemara Ultra for that. That means a lot because it's by far my favourite race.

Rough plan for the year is to concentrate first on running and do a spring marathon. In parallel, learn the front crawl and then do bike/triathlon over the summer. Not planning autumn yet, but there probably will be something.

    Targets:
Sub 35 minutes for the Raheny 5.
Improve my time in Connemara Half (1:44 in 2008, 1:43 in Dublin 2008).
Still thinking of 26.2 in Vienna in April if I can keep the weekend free.
Complete Valentia Tri & Wicklow 200.

Issue will be to keep up enough training as work picks up.

thats all that matters...fast times and PB's are great but not worth a thing unless you love what ya do
best of luck in paris chatoon if you keep that positive attitude im sure you will do great

Only plan on one marathon - Dublin. Would love to get a time which is appraoching 3:20, with a Boston qualifying time of 3:10 a very long shot. Although by only particating in one marathon I hope to give myself the best chance possible.

Also plan on a very respecatble time in the Great Ireland Run in April (42 min I imagine).

Aside from that I want to take part in all of the Phoenix Park Duathlon series races during the Summer, these were heaps of fun last year.

And a sub 5 min mile if I feel up to it, not sure how doable this is though...

And of course take part in loads of Boards AC races, training runs and post run refreshments :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭aburke

    1. Get rid of a niggling injury that has kept me out for 6 months.
    2. Stay injury free.
    3. Get Fit.
    4. Berlin marathon is the only marathon I plan. Won't decide a time target until much closer.
    5. Do a rake of shorter races, 800m up to 10km, with 1 or 2 10 milers and half marathons.

Keep enjoying running - after being out for so long, that should be easy!

oh, not though properly about what I want to do this year
    - sub 3 marathon
    - PB at ironman (by at least 15 min)
    - complete MdS with Mr HM
    - lose some weight (ideally 10kgs but realistically 5)
    - try an adventure race
    - volunteer as much as 2008 (the first year I did enough race organisation/marshalling)

    I wish I was you. :(

I forgot to add I plan on doing a lot more swimming, maybe taking swimming lessons again so I can maybe do a Tri in a few years time. For the past two years I was meant to volunteer for the Dublin City Tri I'll have to keep that in mind.

Odysseus; thanks for that, I'm even closer to changing my entry now, I have changed my hotel booking to peacockes to make it easier should I change. I'll probably have changed my entry by the end of the week. Still have two months to change my mind. The very thoughts of the Ultra is very excitable, my family aren't as excited as me for some reason.

1st and foremost enjoy my running and stay fit and largely injury free, something which I've been blessed with.
I've PBed in the marathon each year since I started running some 5 years ago, but as a 40 year old Mr. Time is running out on me if I want to run faster. 3:06 in Cork is my fastest so far so the 3 hour barrier beckons. I've a few marathons lined up - Rotterdam, Edinburgh and almost certainly New York.
I want to continue to advance in hill racing. I've improved each year since I took it up and its helped my overall running too big time. Funnily enough the hill running contradictorily seems to help avoid injury. So if you're reading this and you get injured from doing too much running on roads etc there could be a lesson there?

Well plan for 2009 is to progress furhter and get back to racing weight. Will need to drop about 10+ kg .

After that I want to run Belfast marathon
Then improve my times from 1500m , 2 mile , 3 k , 5k 10 k and all going well race some of the novice XC nex year.

I've set one or two other goals but they will be kept quite for a while..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

The BIG goal for 2009 is to lose more weight. I want to get down from my current weight of just over 12 stone to around 10 stone, which is a much healthier weight for me.

In terms of racing goals - I want to break 30 minutes for 5k (and hopefully get down to about 27 minutes - current PB is 30.24), and I want to go sub-hour for 10k (current PB is 1.05.59). They seem so modest compared to what everyone else here has up, but it's less than 6 months since I first laced up my running shoes!

I'd also like to do at least one race of longer than 10k distance, contemplating either a 10-mile or half-marathon. I think the marathon would be beyond me for this year, maybe in '10 though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,552 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Firstly, i'ld like to stay injury free. Regarding times i'ld like to
Do a 5 mile in under 35 mins
Do a 10 mile in under 1 hr 15 mins
Do the Connemara half marathon in under 1 hr 45 mins
And do a Marathon in under 3 hrs 45 mins

Losing a bit of weight would be nice too.

My goals are quite short term at the moment:
1: Not getting lost in the mountains during the Art O'Neill Challenge.
2: Not getting lost in the desert and finishing the MdS.
3: Staying injury free to achieve the above.

After April I plan to take a break, but you know what happens then; someone comes along and says did you hear about this event and off you go again.

I did two half marathons last year (Connemara in 2:08 and Dublin in 1:52) so I’d like to do at least two in 2009 (probably Wexford and Dublin)
Target time is 1:45 for Wexford and then 1:37 for Dublin if things keep progressing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

    1. Take 31 seconds off of my 10k time (PB:40:30)
    2. Enjoy Connemara marathon
    2. Edinburgh - beat 3:07:30 (and get Boston Qualifier)
    4. Berlin - beat 3:00:00
    5. Enjoy Dublin Marathon
    6. Compete in as many IMRA races as possible, in less than +30% (currently a generous +34.5%)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

The one major goal for me is to nail down the sub-3 marathon, and am looking towards Berlin for that. Depending on how the year goes I may consider looking towards a 2:55 goal for Berlin.

No real other time goals for me. Still haven't run a 10k, so would like to do this and maybe get a sub-38. Would also like to improve on my 10 mile time and move towards the hour mark, although would be happy with going 62mins this year, and then the 60min mark in 2010.

Getting married in May, so that plus honeymoon will disrupt racing in the early part of the summer.

my goals for thiss year are 1:to comlpete the 6 irish marathons
2:go sub 4 for at least 4 of them
3:go sub 6 for the conn ultra
    4:not drown doin the triathlone
    5:enjoy every step.

Run the Ballycotton 10 in under 85 mins.
    Run a 10k under 45 mins.
    Run a 5k under 21 mins.
    Log 1000 miles.
    Lose a stone weight.
Run a marathon in under 4hrs.(Injury permitting)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭aburke

    Not modest at all.
Unless your second name is Bekele or Gebrselassie, there is always someone training harder and running faster.
Do your bit and enjoy it - anybody can match Bekele or Gebrselassie in this regard [even if they seem to smile a lot when finishing their races!]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 975 ✭✭✭louthandproud

    Run more races.

    Run a 10k in 43-44 mins.

    Run a 5k 21-22 mins.

    Lose a 5-8Kgs weight.

    Run a marathon(Dublin) in under 3:40

Not get injured like last year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,983 ✭✭✭TheRoadRunner

stay healthy first and foremost and continue to get out running most days.

Race wise I would love to run pbs for the marathon, 10k and 5k. I'm hoping to achieve these goals in the first half of the year while training for the London marathon. Especially the marathon pb obviously.

My Summer months will be a little hectic so as long as I keep ticking over for the remaining months of the year I will be a happy man

My goals are to complete my first marathon in Connemara and then have a go at the Dublin Marathon. A matter of pride (my dad boasting about his 3'40 ) is the only time objective. Should be achievable (I think) as I can do 10k in 42'' and 10 miles in under 75. Bragging rights are up for grabs this year!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭gmurran

Not sure about going for the longer distance (marathons) or shorter distances myself (5K or 10K) but my goals are

    1. 2009 miles of running in 2009
    2. New PB with a sub 15:45 for 5K
    3. New PB with a sub 33 for 10K
    4. If I do Dublin again then sub 2:45 would be my goal
    5. Run a few shorter races in the UK and or in Europe to mix it up a bit

Best of luck everyone with your goals.

A sub40min 10k. Everything else is secondary. My first attempt will be in May and if that does'nt happen I have a backup plan for Sept.

My only goal is to drop 25 minutes from my Dublin Marathon time and beat 3:30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭Roddy23

Main goals for myself this year are:

    1. Lose more weight - knee was at me last year doing the Adidas Series, so will need to get the weight down. Realistically would like to drop about 14kgs.

    2. Run a Marathon - am doing the Connemara Half so all going well would like to attempt the Cork Marathon.

    3. Ran the Dublin Half last Autumn, and was not happy with my time. Would like to run 2hrs 15 in March for the Connemara half ( or quicker :pac:). If this means beating my brother doing it, happy days. Otherwise there's always the next race for that.

    Goals for 2009,

    Sub 38mins 10km - Bupa (Aware 39.15)

    Dublin Marathon - 3.15(2008 - 3.30)

Olymipic Distance - 2h 20mins ( a propoer measured one... if I can find one)

Lost sheep Half IM under 5.45 (All years bike training will be in the Dublin Mountains).

Bike leg of Olymipc Distance (40km) in under 1hr 10 mins (2008 was 1.12) - again a proper distance race.....maybe more in this.

Swim.... as I am not a swimmer at all. My goal is 5km per week. And to get a pool based 1500m in under 30mins (best of 2008 was near 32 mins...hence not a swimmer)

Put the olymipic goals together =

    Swim - 30 min
    Bike- 1hour 10
    Tri 10km - 39 mins
    T1 &T2 - 3 mins(depending on the sizes of Transition zones)

All in thats 2hr 22mins for olympic distance....so need to find 2min somwhere....

    Great post for goals...

    My goals for 2009 :

    1. Stay Healthy !

    5k - Sub 18 mins ( never raced one )
    4m - Sub 24 ( current PB 24:03 )
    5m - Sub 31 ( current PB 32:50 )
    10k - Sub 40 ( current PB 41:10 )
    10m - Sub 65 ( current PB 66:10 )
    Half Marathon - Sub 90 ( current PB 94:27 )
    Marathon - 3:30 ( never did one )

I do not know how many of these dicstances i will race in 2009 to be honest.
I will def do a few 5m,a couple of 10k,a couple of 10m,doubt i will do a half marathon.
I would love to have a crack at a fast 5k route.

But one thing i am def doing is a marathon ...working out which one at the moment, ideally i would do 2,the first ( hopefully belfast on 4/5/2009 ) just to do the 26.2,that would give me nearly 5 full months before Berlin on 20/9.
Thats my main goal for 2009 ....Berlin
If Belfast does not happen...so be it...Its all about Berlin ! :D

At some point I need to improve on my 3:27 marathon time from last year. Have to first beat my dad's time of 3:20 and then my one of my brothers times of 3:07. Was hoping to try and give those times a bash this year but due to other things happening now I may end up doing a season skiing in New Zealand instead, so will probably have to leave those targets for another year.

Another brother told me over christmas that his pb for a half marathon was 1:09 though when I never even thought that he had ran that far, he was a 4 min miler and won UK university 1500's in his time but never really did distance stuff as far as I knew. I think I might ignore aiming for beating that time though, but if I can get close to what I think my previous best half was from years ago of about 1:30(?) then I'll be happy for this year I think.

    My goals:
    3 Marathons - Barcelona - Edinburgh - Dublin

Also beat last years times in the following - Raheny 5/Great Ireland Run/Streets/Adidas Series/Bupa London Run

To improve strength in left leg/hip flexor.
To lose 1 stone by mid march.

With that kind of talent, he could probably have run 1:09 just as a once off without upping mileage or anything. Nice target he's set you there - pick them off one family member at a time!

It's also quite likely that he actually did that 1:09 with a backpack on, in full kit and somebody else chasing him with a rifle when he was in the marines. When it comes to trying to get the family records though we tend to just ignore his times as he was just too good to compete with, I was surprised that he had ever actually got a time for that kind of distance though. I know that brother has never attempted a marathon though, and will never, so if I do manage to beat 3:07 then I'll have one family record at least.

    2009 goals

Due to the next 4 months being alot more hectic than Id like I will prob switch to the half marathon for Connemara. My goal for that is sub-2hrs.

Paris Marathon 2 weeks later. Goal for that is definitely sub-4hr, and hopefully beat my DM 08 time of 3:53:17.

First week of June - officially have PhD finished.

Amongst all of this I would love to lose ~6kg, have a strong core, stay injury free and enjoying my running.

Great thread, by putting my goals on paper may encourage me to stick to 'em

1/ First aim is to do a spring marathon, it will be my first. approaching half marathon distance now but niggling knee injury from football is giving me grief on longer runs.

2/ Next aim is assuming I complete marathon is to go sub 3.15

3/ Do an olympic tri in under 2:20 (PB 2:21:52, however this was carlingford, according to my bike monitor the cycle was a few km short of 40km)

    4/ Complete a half ironman

    5/ Do a 10k in under 38 mins (PB 39.15 Aware)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭liamo

A few goals for this year.

    1. Sub 23 minute 5k in March (Hopefully the St Patrick's weekend 5K will be held again this year)
    2. Step up from sprint to olympic distance triathlon in Athy in May
    3. Complete the half-Ironman distance triathlon in Courtown in August
    4. Sub 20 minute 5k in October

Mightn't get number 4 but it's a good target to aim for.

I only started running in September of last year. I aim to do a 5k and 10k race and a half marathon this year. Ive been training on the treadmill and down the lanes 5days a week 2days on 1 of then 3days on then 1 off. I do between 15 and 20miles a week.

First time i jogged and half walked 5k i did it in a time of 34.56. Yesterday i did it in 26.32. So im getting fitter ive not tried 10k yet as i want to build my fitness up first, but here are my aims.

    5k under 24mins
    10k under 50mins
    half marathon under 2h 10mins

I know them times are bad but it would be an achievement for me.

I am still just off the sub 50 10k but have done 2 half marathons in 1h58 and 1h56 so maybe you might find the 10k goal a bit harder to break, but people are different and it depends on your training, good luck.

    Rosedale6, Hawkwing,

" I know them times are bad but it would be an achievement for me."

I wrote this a while ago.... Point 1 relates to you two.

I started doing triathlon a few year ago (only sprint) and then took a year off to travel. Being back at it, I often wonder am I making progress... and again how do I know...

Below are the main things I have pickup from talking to other people and taking on board their advice.

    1. You goals are exactly that...YOUR GOAS. You should never compare yourself to others unless you are trying to improve and you find someone who is your benchmark.

i.e If you can swim 30mins for 1500m and someone you know can do it in 28mins... They may advise you on ways to improve. Then again, you might not want to improve (It might not be YOUR GOAL).

    2. The more you swim, the better you get. I have been told that this is not true but I just keep trying as I'm so bad that any time in the water has to be good for me !!!!

    3. Its natural to be nervous when starting racing as a newbie. Everyone gets nervous. I have a mate who has been pulled out of the water (Wicklow aquathon), I, myself have even been on my back looking for help from the rescue canoes !!

    3. 10% improvements - A few year ago a friend told me that if you can improve your times by 10% in one year, that is a huge achievement.

So, if you can run 50mins 10km this year and get down to 45mins in 12 months. Thats GREAT
Just cause some people can do it in 38mins, does not mean we all have to do it in that time.

    4. When you running, It can be fun. When racing, pick people in front of you and chase them. Count the people you catch and the run will go faster (and so will you). Liz can testify to this

    5. Bike training - A new bike is not a subistitue for lots of hours on the bike.

    6. Just because people have cool bikes does not mean they can cycle faster than you.

    7. Just because people have a tri suit does not mean they are faster than you.

    8. Just because people are in a club and in a tri suit does not mean they are faster than you.

    9. Just because people are older than you does not mean you can beat them.

    10. Setting targets - Some people enjoy targets (Others do not)!. Targets take many forms. Some use numbers like sub 40min run for 10km, others use english like "to finish an olympic distance traithlon by November 2008". Either way, here are some fitness related targets I have heard about in the last few months..

    - Do an Ironman
    - Do an Ironman on every continent (A guy told me this the week after he did the goal above)...Go figure.
    - Run 10km in less than 45mins
    - Break 60min 40km time trail (Stephen told me about this one)- Personally, mine is to break 1.10 for 40km time trial... but thats just me.
    - Run under 3hrs 30mins for the a marathon within 5 marathons.
    - Top 40% - In a race, find out how many people are in the race and see if you are in the top 40%. (Obviously, the %ages change depending how much potential you think you have)
    - Beat John - Usually a friend/rival - Always a good one for friends.
    - Do a charity race (raise money and get fit at the same time).
    - Swim under 30mins for 1500mins
    - Cycle a leg of the tour de france (one of the best I've ever heard)- Thats Ditch
    - Catch Ditch (Thanks Mick Foy...)
    - Catch WARREN - That my own one.
    - Cycle from Mizen to Malin head (in one week)- I believe the National Guide Dogs for the Bind do this evey year.

Anyway, the targets I've heard from talking to other are always the same. The are always realistic (to peoples own abilities) and that all that matters.

    11. Buy a triathlon box- Put all your stuff into it and keep your partner happy (as its more tidy)

I sure that others have more words of wisdom but as I write this, I think that if someone gave me this article when I started, I might have had an easier ride to when learning about the sport.

To all who continue to try in the knowledge that while they may never win a race, you can always achieve you own goals !!!!

My event goals are somewhat less ambitious than some of the others here but they mean a lot to me:

    1. Finish Connamara half in under 2 hrs
    2. Finish Wexford half (if I do it) in 1.50 hrs
    3. Complete the Valentia Sprint Tri - for some reason I have a mental block on the swim event though I've done longer ones.
    4. Do a few sprint and a couple of Olympic tri's over the summer leading up to my two 'big' events
    5. Do the London Olympic Tri in under 3hrs
    6. Complete the Eireman half iron (time not important, although sub 6hrs would be great for me).

Associated with actual events I have a number of smaller minor goals:
    1. Do a sub 50min 10km
    2. Do a sub 40 minute 20km bike leg in a sprint tri
    3. Do a sub 80 min 40km bike leg in an Olympic tri
    4. Get my swimming speed to average 2.30mins per 100m for an Olympic tri (37-38 mins)
    5. Loose another stone (to make total loss of 4 stone since I started training in May 2008)

Really looking forward to 2009 after my epiphany in May 2008 and my transition from couch potato to 'moderately fit' person i.e. someone who can now walk an talk on the phone at the same time.
