I've had the flu twice this year, both times I was in bed for about a week. Actually have a respiratory viral infection at the mo.

Great Christmas, drank like a demon, had great craic and didn't piss anyone off (even had a Del-Boy moment with a bar counter lol)... But today, oh my God I have never had a sore throat like it. It's like someone scraping the back of my throat with razor blades. Argggghhh... Suppose it will be a great excuse not to go out tomorrow night eh?

Yup, got it at the start of December, kinda half recovered from it and got it there again before Christmas, out for the whole of that too. Was the flu but the Doc insists its some kind of infection. I just call it the ''I'm Dying'' flu. Only up and about there now.

Apparently all the Chemists ran out of anti-biotics over the christmas period too. I know what I would of liked in my stocking!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭Clover

I got it at the start of December also , had been fine all year then out of the blue it hit me and at first I was just taking panadol cold & flu for it .

But after about a week of that I had to go to the doctors and get antibiotics to shift it, that took about another week to get over it and now two of my sons have it .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Koloman

I read a report in a newspaper just before Christmas that said the Man Flu thing was a myth and it was actually women who complain more and whinge about a cold! Did anyone else see this report?

Ive had the Manflu and was really ill.

I should really have been in hospital with superpowerful Manflu combating drugs - oxygen tent and drips and tubes and bleeping machines.

All I got was Lemsip and vaporub.

Look at this - a Councellor says that men only vocalise their feelings when ill - but women moan all the time.

a seperate study by Lemsip shows that half of women are sympathetic to their OH when he is ill.

Twice as many men then women take days of to look after an ill OH

Third time this month to have it. and I got it from a man. But the difference with me is that fact that I know I'm not actually going to die!!!

As it should be. Women dont care as much or moan as much as men when they have the flu. They just get in with it. Its the men who win the awards for amateur dramatics.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭PrivateEye

i work down the local pub, and the amount of people coming in with SERIOUS colds/obvious flu over the Christmas was an absolute joke, not fair on anybody to go out like that.

And while men are only out a day or to from work - women take 8 to 10 days off.

    http://news.scotsman.com/health/Man-flu-Don39t-be-a.4799128.jp

Because they are women the get away with it and use up lots and lots of sick days -more then men.

Suffering from serious dose of the flu myself at the moment. Off work all week and can't believe I'm too wrecked to even leave the house. Think it's the first new years eve in years that I have stayed in.

Man Flu isn't a joking matter. In work the other day we received important guidance on Man Flu - though I think is was aimed at those women in our office which, if the evidence presented in this thread so far is true, are lying, lazy and unsympathetic.

    10 Facts about Man-Flu

Fact 1. Man-Flu is more painful than childbirth. This is an irrefutable scientific fact*.
*(Based on a survey of over 100,000 men.)

Fact 2. Man-Flu is not 'just a cold'. It is a condition so severe that the germs from a single Man-Flu sneeze could wipe out entire tribes of people living in the rainforest. And probably loads of monkeys too.

Fact 3. Women do not contract Man-Flu. At worst they suffer from what is medically recognised as a 'Mild Girly Sniffle' - which, if a man caught, he would still be able to run, throw a ball, tear the phone book in half and compete in all other kinds of manly activities.

Fact 4. Men do not 'moan' when they have Man-Flu. They emit involuntary groans of agony that are entirely in proportion to the unbearable pain they are in.

Fact 5. Full recovery from Man-Flu will take place much quicker if their simple requests for care, sympathy and regular cups of tea are met. Is that really so much to ask? Florence Nightingale would have done it

Fact 6. More men die each year from MFN (Man-Flu Neglect) than lots and lots of other things. (Like rabbit attacks or choking on toast).

Fact 7. Men suffering from Man-Flu want nothing more than to get out of bed and come to work, but they are too selfless to risk spreading this awful
condition amongst their friends and colleagues. In this sense, they are the greatest heroes this country has ever known.

Fact 8. In 1982 scientists managed to simulate the agonising symptoms of full blown Man-Flu in a female chimp. She became so ill that her head literally fell off.

Fact 9. Man-Flu germs are more powerful than He-Man, The Thundercats and The A-Team combined. They are too strong for weak, nasty tasting 'lady
medicines' like Lemsip, so don't bother trying to force them on a victim of Man-Flu.

Fact 10. While it may seem like a Man-Flu sufferer is just lying around enjoying 'Diagnosis Murder' it is a commonly recognised medical fact that the exact pitch and frequency of Dick Van Dyke's voice has remarkable soothing powers.

Apologies if posted elsewhere already - it just seemed apt to this thread
