    Hey
    Anyone any idea on what is the best amount of sets and reps to do when trying to tone up...
    have lost a lot of weight and feeling much better and instead of ploughing away and doing as heavy as poss id now like to get better definition whats the best way about it...
    have read up but some information seems to be conflicting

    You're right, there is a lot of conflicting information out there, and certain fitness advice seems to go in and out of fashion.

    The general consensus seems to be 8 - 12 reps (as in, you are physically unable to lift the weight past 8 - 12 reps) seems to be the best range for gaining size, although personally I find 6 - 8 reps works best for me.

    The more sets you do (roughly 30 seconds break between sets) the more muscle fibre you use, so around 3 sets is considered sufficient.

    Btw, by "toning" I assume you mean you want some sort of muscle definition. The only way to get this is by lifting weights. If you're finding you're putting on too much muscle (unlikely if you're female and have a normal diet) all you have to do is relax a bit on the amount of weight and sets you're doing.
