Is it legal to go to the moon?

Ok, I want to try and build a craft to take me to the moon. I don't care if I don't come back. It's small, so I wouldn't need that much fuel to get out of the atmosphere. I plan to modify a light aircraft, which I already own, so that won't be a problem.

All I want to know is this: Does the moon, like, belong to America or something? Do I need some sort of permission to go?

I hope you actually don't plan on going to the moon....

I don't quite think you've thought this through. Also the size of the rockets normally used is because of the force necessary to get out of the atmosphere not the other way round.

Cool idea but are you joking, maybe send a coin or something like that. A thin plane would'nt survive in space never mind making it out of the atmosphere.

Might have a bit of trouble closing your flightplan using a VHF radio if you're on the moon. Although i'm sure Vodafone are putting a mast on the moon so you could always call Shannon to close the plan.

You need permission from your mammy. After that you're all set.

Actually 4 days worth of oxygen and containers for it may weigh quite a bit.

I wonder does the moon have recessions. Imagine Brian Cowen spending $1 billion on 'Research & Development' just to get to the moon, to find that theres anothre recession on there.

Maybe Roddy Molloy has already been there on his 'Space Research & Development relationship Trips' with Fás?

I don't think Harney ever went to the Moon though. I think she actually got her hair done on earth. It was her gift for being left behind after being rejected by her spacesuit. Her fat was taking up all the oxygen.

I own the moon. And no, you can't go.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,717 ✭✭✭Nehaxak

Could also just use astral projection. Dedicate enough time to it and lots of practice, I'm sure you could reach the moon (or further).

That or build/invent a gravitational controlling device to power your craft, loads have tried, many have failed.

    All equally mad ideas.

Maybe you could make a bet with Richard Branson that you can land him on the Moon sooner than he can land you on the Moon!!

He'll have you on the Moon by the end of the week prob :)
Just ignore all the huge "Virgin" branding on your spacesuit. It'll look cool. Honest.

Alternatively China might take a punt on showcasing you as a happy neo-sino-commie inductee (you may have to learn Chinese and constantly spout some politico mumbo-jumbo to sing their praises and your eternal love of the Red Way, etc). But they've got nice space tech now and no end of man-power to box you into your plastic, lead-painted space coffin craft. Their quality control boffins know exactly where the broken glass and toxic insecticide is supposed to be packed...

    Send us a postcard!!

im guessing it's a hypothetical situation. the government would more than likley stop you before hand citing danger to yourself or others, but legally no, the moon doesn't "belong" to anyone.

slightly OT,but apply the same thing to antarctica, what would the story be?

It belongs to nobody, no mans land as far as I am aware :P

Just ask the Lizzzzzzzzzzzzzards for a lift, onc they finish spraying chemtrails they head back to their secret base on the Dark Side of the moon

as for The Antartica thing, No one owns it, but there are international laws prohibiting anyone from setin up any kind of permanent settlement there. all those modern Bases are temporary strucures, so the only permanent structures are the old whaling stations (thereopening of which mightbe frowned upon) and the Secret Nazi/Lizzzzard UFO base built in the 30's

so realisticly you need to talk to your local Lizard ;)

OP if it kicks off big time in the Mid East, we might be all headed towards the moon involuntarily, so you might have company.....

I have heard that the UN had some law or charter or something like that, that allowed any unclaimed territory to be claimed by anyone.

So some guy in the states realise that the universe hadn't been claimed, so he claimed it.....and apparentlent sells it off for $20 an acre

Does the moon, like, belong to America or something?

The bits they brought back do.

Cheapest thing for you to do is go to the Air and Space museum(s) in Washington DC, wear scuba gear and go to the moon exhibition.
    There's some moon rock there.

The question is moot, since you'll never get there. Have a read of this for starters!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_velocity
    http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae158.cfm

How do you propose to reach a speed of 25,000 mph to escape the Earth's athmosphere? And travel 250,000 miles to the moon?? ;)

i know that NASA etc. are always talking about escape velocity but AFAIK, you don't really need to go 25,000 mph to make it out of the atmosphere. as long as you can keep putting more and more space between your ar$e and the earth it doesn't matter how slow you go does it?

Slightly OT but was watching Top Gear and they were in a bay in Vietnam and there was over 1900 island on it. Is there anything to stop someone just moving onto one of these islands and just building a house on it? Does someone own all these small islands? are they part of the Vietnamese Government? Similarly with some of the unmanned islands off Ireland

Rockall has already been claimed by the UK so as to stop the Ruskies putting a nuclear base there. Some poor sod had to spend a week(?) sitting on the rock on his own.

I think if you launch your rocket off the back of an aircraft at a high altitude you don't need that high an EV as you're not trying to lob a huge hunk of metal from the ground straight up with enough force that it doesn't come back down.

You still need a tremendous amount of thrust though.

I'd be more concerned about the legalities of developing the ballistics technology required, as their potential use in weapons systems would bring you under close scrutiny.

But they have put a brass plaque on it now so what chance does anyone stand of ever removing that? The defences are just too good.
