    simply no

and would not be allowed on any site

wearing them along with goggles would not be a problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,588 ✭✭✭KonFusion

    too many gaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭OzCam

Unfortunately, no. You won't be allowed to play on any site with one of those, unless you have goggles or shooting glasses on underneath.

The eye area must be sealed all around. Although the risk of any BB causing injury to the eye from the side or below is tiny, it's an insurance requirement.

That's why ordinary safety glasses aren't allowed either, even though they're usually strong enough. In airsoft, there are really only two things you just don't take risks with. Your eyes... and your eyes :)

PS: your head will overheat as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

Gaps are too big, eye protection should not allow a BB to pentrate from any angle (no matter how absurd you may think it is that a BB could get through a gap, that'll be the one you'll get shot through :))

A motorbike helmet would be far too awkward/heavy to wear on your head from a practical point of view anyway :)

(Not sure if the visor would withstand a BB hit either, do visors stay intact on impact during a bike crash?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,588 ✭✭✭KonFusion

well what i was thinking would be one of those ballistic helms wit the ballistic visors with some sort of ballistic (saying ballistic alot here) fabric that I could use to extend from the visor to around the neck or something so as to close the gaps....thought I'd probably look stupid...plus you could never put the visor up lol

...this is what i get from watching too many mythbusters

It would defo stand up to a BB hit,(ive had a few "face meets road/handlebars moments in the past with bike lids.,lol)
but as the lads said, very open to being shot in the face, if someone shot at the ground it could bounce up and hit you in eye., it would also be horribly uncomfortable and cumbersome.,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭OzCam

I've just figured out a better explanation about why the goggles/whatever need to be sealed all round...

If a BB was to squeeze in through a gap at the sides or from below, it could in theory ricochet off the inside of the lens and cause an eye injury. Probably not serious damage, but definitely enough to require a visit to the hospital. That'll spoil your game.

The other thing is, and I'm subject to correction by medically qualified people on this, is that although a BB at 1J won't actually penetrate the eyeball, if you had an existing problem (like a partially detached retina or pressure problems or something) a BB impact could potentially still cause damage.

So the moral of the story is, you don't take risks with your sight. It's just not worth it.

also a question of insurance for any site, i can only talk from corks pov but im shore it will be the same for all, but insurance would simple not cover anything like that

I saw a guy wearing shooting glasses get hit in the eye from an off the ground ricochet.

    It happens.

See, I took your quoe, changed 3 words...and we have a perfect decription for your mother.

Sean is right, I was wearing a full facemask and got shot in the teeth from rick-o-shays.

I have noticed to be fair alot of people wearing glasses type guarders etc etc and i wear them myself from time to time..and Ive noticed that there actually is gaps in those glasses. I saw a guy at Gathering two take an eye hit through his guarders ( thankfully he was grand)

I've also seen some hilarious accidents with BB's coming out of magwells when people repairing guns to have it hit them in the eye, to only shout abuse at the aeg.

I think lemming always says it best. Why would you want to **** with the only safety precaution needed in airsoft.

Although the day someone invents ballistic contact lenses is the day they make a few bob of me

Well, if you arrive on a skirmish site and put on a motorbike helmet & visor then the folllowing will probably happen:
    1. You will be asked "Are you special needs".
    2. You may notice everyone else gathers in the far corner of the safe zone.
    3. You will get a green armband for a match between red and blue teams.

If you want a helmet/protection look at a balaclava/M88/mesh or polycarb goggles as an option. Works for me.

Also motor cycle helmets are quite heavy, not very comfortable in a situation where you are turning your head alot and diving in and out of cover, very impractical and uncomfortable, you'll probably sprain your neck.

I got shot in the eye by a P90 mag! Whacked it to release a jam and the sudden force cause the mag catch to allow one bb out, straigt into my face, that stung I can tell you. Must chrono a P90 mag....

Yeah that happened to me too, infact, thats what docs incidence was referring to.,lol the hop chamber in Dex's M7A1 decided to vomit a bb from the magwell straight into my eye, i responed with the necessary formalities of "arrhh, ya f*%kin Bas$%rd! etc, and i didnt even cry!

    well here is weird,

i was test firing at hrta, the man sized target a good while back. i fired, it hit the target, bounced back and hit me in the goggles. there was no power in it, except for the need to change my shorts, caught me completely off guard.

and like lethal i saw a stream of bb zip out of a mid cap mag when loading it, shot right by my face....so in the field is not the only place to cover them there eyes...

Yeah, but all of those who slag him are around a lot longer than you, and we're entitled.

And watch out for sensei masks, I had a bb go through a small gap between the mesh and the mask and hit me in the eye. I was ok fortunately.

As a matter of fact, theres only two people in this community that can slag me really, cause they are my bosses and thats its :)

And Vtec I didnt wanna say because you have an uber reputation for being "the fixer" so didnt want you losing any rep.

I think at some stage in your airsoft career your going to take one through your face protection, may sound weird but it will happen.

I've had rick-o-shay smack my teeth, I've had dodgy biodegradebale BB's crack through a mesh masks into my eyes and mouth, last sunday i got two nice shots into my ear, which required a wiggle to get out, grenade on my lap, tornado down my back..the works.

Its really about minimising the damage for when that inevitable accident happens. And it will happen eventually.

Theres enough range and variety out there now, and enough good quality products that dont fog.

    Arena flackjacks
    ESS fan goggles
    JT paintball masks
    Mesh masks
    Generic goggles with good ventilation
    Guarders
    lidl glasses ( absolutely brilliant)

Just stick with something reputible and you will be sound.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    lidl glasses ( absolutely brilliant)

Yeah, in a way. The lenses are perfect, but unfortunately the frames CAN crack from bb's :| But the risk is very slight.

Personally, the thing to watch in my eyes(no pun intended) are sensei masks. They are brilliant, but they come apart easily, especially rentals which are abused. Check them before every use :)

Those lidl glasses are not airsoft glasses.

I bought a pair and couldnt find a way to prevent them failing, let alone have to go to an effort to make them fail. The only way they are said to work is if you never remover the lens, and thats even just hearsay.

If you get hit in the face, it may well hit the frame, the frame is crap, the lens pops out.

I would never recommend them, I will never skirmish in a pair.

Sam, you seem very strongly against the lidl glasses in here and in previous threads even though myself, doc, lethal, Gerrout, KD etc have all used them with no problems.,
Have you thought about bringing them back for a replacement pair? maybe there was something wrong with yours? it is a possibility since it seems to be the only case of them smashing.

There's a thread about the Lidl glasses here somewhere, actually, which I found interesting. Well worth a read.

Its the old story with airsoft, the only thing we need safety wise is for our eyes, and money can replace a tooth, not an eye.

IMO its either 3mm polycarbonate designed for the task at hand, or nothing.

Just dont think its worth the risk.

My m9 gbb trashed my pair of lidls in a few shots, the lens wouldnt stay in under impact at all.

My opinion is its better safe than sorry in this case.

    Two words: Super Glue

You cant change the leses obviously but there's no way they are popping out.

The idea of cheap shooting goggles seemed great at the time.

I got them brand new, they dont work.

Superglue? lol, I'll sell ye these pair if you are so confident!

Suffice it to say, if you use these, test them at home first.

I wont be using them, surely people can accept that this is just a word of warning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,363 ✭✭✭gerrowadat

It's a matter of personal preference really, and how 'safe' you want to be. I wear mesh sometimes, in the full knowledge that it's unlikely to stop a bb shattering and getting fragments in my eyes. I wear goggles only knowing I could chip a tooth. Considering getting a gumshield though.

Different times call for different solutions, too. I wouldn't even consider playing cqb such as the warehouse without full face, whereas I keep a pair of lidl glasses for long running games where you need to sleep/walk around out of action, or for walking around marshalling if I'm not going to be getting all sweaty like.

I've probably spent more on eye and face protection than a lot of people have spent on AEGs (something like 400e), and at the end of the day you have to make tradeoffs. Test your kit, be informed, and be happy with what you're doing. Ask the question "If these things fail, was I happy that I took enough precautions and tested". If you're happy with your lidl glasses, use your lidl glasses.

Personally I was surprised at how well the lidl glasses held up. I wouldn't use them in a full-on combat situation because of the stories, and I certainly wouldn't tell someone they were as good as actual ballistic protection. The ESS Strikers I use are certified as ballistic-safe, and I can go back to ESS if they fail. I've been actually unable to find out who made the LIDL glasses (none of the packaging has much info on it), so I wouldn't trust them with my eyes for just that reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,758 ✭✭✭Stercus Accidit

With the lidls it just seems a case of some work, some don't.

In my case they were bad enough that I'll never use them, people knowing they can fail at least means they will test them hopefully before using them.

My goggles I use for games, usmc replicas, were quite cheap, and maybe around 25€ delivered, made by king arms.

Seem sturdy enough to me, and I've made sure to test them.

*message of the month from Stercus Accidit*

Test your eye wear at home before using them in the field!

They're rejects. There was a massive batch of ones that were rejected by the military, but were fine for airsoft. From what I heard, the defect was something to do with the direction of curvature of the lens, but nothing that could make them fail when hit by a BB.

I have a pair of them, and a bunch more people have them around. They've stood up to serious abuse, so I'd personally be ok with using them, if they were large enough for glasses underneath, which they're not :-/

Ditto with the abuse. However, my glasses fit under them fine (I have a narrow face, your mileage may vary). The goggles haven't fogged up on me at all, the glasses do sometimes. The trick with washing-up liquid sounds completely daft, but it does actually work.

I'll be investigating the Px insert at my next eye test.

I just think that buttermilk colour is awful, so I got brown ones direct from Arena. But for 17 bucks, you can't go wrong.

I had them shipped to california while I was there. I think a few people on boards did get them shipped here though.
