    just wondering what the best equipment to buy to loose weight and strengten arms

    i was thinking of a rowing machine?

    Most people I know could not manage a chinup, I could do none when I got mine, now I can do 20 though. Problem is you are thrown in at the deep end with your own weight. You can do negatives, i.e. stand on a chair and lower yourself in a controlled manner. This works your muscles well, I did this until I could manage proper ones. Once you can do 3-4 you will increase in strength quick enough. Problem is getting the first one done.

    I would highly recommend gymnastic rings, these allow you to do dips too, but for beginners you can graduate a lot easier to proper pull/chinups & dips. Like these bodyrows

    rubadub, how long were you at it before you could do one? And then 5?

    Want to start SS and have no idea if i can do a chin up. guess ill have to struggle in gym for a while looking funny.

    I am not too certain. I was lifting dumbbells before I got the bar. I think it was 1-2months max to do one unassisted one, but I weighed ~15kg more then too, that is the other problem, many will be lifting to try and lose fat, so have a higher bodyweight to start with. When I could do a single one I would get right back up and do negatives again. I probably went from 1 to 5 in 4-6weeks, the negatives really helped a lot.

    I still do weighted negatives, I think I can do ~5reps with 30kg, and ~8 with 20kg. I have done a single rep with 50kg before, must test that again.

    Using the hole in your attic. If you put wood across the hole you could put rope or cloth, like a big bed sheet over it and do bodyrows as shown

    The lads recommended a pull up bar? Not this crap from Aldi.

    Is it not pointless starting off on a pull up bar when the OP cant do any?

    Shouldnt the OP get free weights which are light enough and start building up from there until they are at a satisfactory level.Plus with free weights you can work all other areas of the body ie shoulders,triceps,biceps etc.

    Plus witha pull up bar youre hardly gona lose too much weight if u cant do 1.a friend of mine lost alot of weight and built up stength using free weights for 20 mins each evening.

    Are these pull up bars or Gymnast rings easy to set up ? I haven't got any obivous places to set up the likes of the bar. My bedroom would be a converted attic so there isn't really anywhere to put them without pulling some of the ceiling off with it :p

    Any alternatives ?

    Headshot, the best advice I can give you is join a gym. You want to lose weight and strengthen your arms? What about the rest of your body?

    Honestly, join a gym and get a programmme sorted and change how you eat.

    Nothing there looks much use to be honest. Most only advise certain cardio machines, i.e. quality ones, and they are pricey, they are also unnecessary if all you want is to lose a gut and build some muscle. Some people feel they have to invest money to see an outcome. If you want cardio training I would recommend cycling to work, or walking to work once or twice a week if it is far. Walk everywhere, the shops etc. Cycling is faster in dublin rush hour traffic anyway.

    A lot of peoples equipment at home just ends up being a clothes horse.

    You can start off doing negatives like I said, or put a big bed sheet over it and do body rows etc. You can do ab rollouts and tricep pushups. Starting out you can just do pushups and dips on chairs etc, no equipment really needed at all. I would recommend some simple weights like you said too. Most here recommend full on olympic sets.     Avoid vinyl as mentioned. Most vinyl come with hollow bars rated to low weights, my hollow ezcurl bar bent at around 100kg.

    I can do pullups on my stairs with no equipment, there is a ledge on the landing. In my parents house I can pass a towel through 2 railings so it comes down at a nice distance apart for pullups.

    Some use eyelets going into the rafters, not sure about your attic converted though, as it is probably a low ceiling to start with.

    Do your stairs going into the attic have gaps in them? i.e. you could loop straps through the gaps if they do, i would really have to see it to get ideas. You can also get or make free standing dip & chinup stations. You can also get chinup bars that screw directly into a wall, rings could be put on them too, like this guy has.

    The argos set did me fine, but you will outgrow it. You can put the bar up on a load of blankets to raise the bar for deadlifts. But a better option would be to get 2x20kg plates which would raise it up higher

    I think those 20kgs do not bring the bar up to the proper official height it should be for contests. I still have mine on blankets to cushion it against the floorboards, and to raise it.
