well, seeing as there is a thread about overrated films out there (and gets ppl pretty heated), i thought the opposite may be fun.

i may as well start with Sphere. i thought it was great & couldn't believe the bad rap it got in the Imdb.

seeing as i watched it again last night , i would say king kong 2005 is under rated , so too beouwolf which i saw for the 1st time the other night and really liked

a few others that spring to mind are kingdom of heaven , much better for me than troy which was released around the same time
hulk with eric banna which i saw again today
also , i always enjoy alien v predator

So basically you like anything with big dumb monsters in it? (Kingdom of heaven qualifies by virtue of Liam Neeson)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

    National Treasure (1&2)

As OTT as they were they were both really good fun, rivaling Indiana Jones imo.

Frailty - Bill Paxman and Matthew McCougghhhanneyyy (or whatever, I can never pronounce it! :D)

A good movie overall, but a truly great ending!

Blast From The Past- its got Christopher Walken, Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone and a really cool premise, what if somebody spent 40 years in a bomb shelter thinking America had been destroyed by russian missiles.

Have to say one of my favourite films is Sunshine which didnt seem to be a big movie at all. I don't even remember it being in the cinema which is a pity as I'd say it would be amazing on the big screen. Brilliant soundtrack by Underworld and John Murphy aswel, which was never released... :(

Along with this I'd put Children OF Men, it really took me by surprise... great camerawork and for once an "end of the world" film without an absolutely ridiculous plot.

BTW I really cannot understand how Brendan Frasier is an actor!! He is probably the worst actor I've ever seen in a 'big' film, with that dumb looking emotionless face... haha.

King kong 2005, one of my fave movies of all time and a lot of people hated it. Actually felt emotion when kong fell which is pretty weird cause i normally hate cg laiden films.

Ah i dunno, i think that a lot of films these days just lob you straight into the action then you dont get a feel for the characters and then never really care what happens to them. I think the build up helps the film, although yup they could have easily cut 30 mins here and there!

The Matrix was pretty under rated when it was first released. Shame they made the other 2

who remembers a movie from the 90s called ...Paper Mask

its about a hospital porter who pretends to be a fully qualified doctor when he gets a job in another hospital...full of black humour...worth a watch

State of Grace is on MGM Movies right now.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100685/

Great flick. Amazing cast. Well worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

I don't know what the hell it's doing on at 6pm though!

i really like king kong 2005 though i cant think of another film that looses its appeal on the small screen like king kong does
there are a few things wrong with the movie though , its about 45 mins too long and it has a completly pointless and altogether tedious side story involving the cabin boy and a black sailor which is irrelevant to the main story and eventually goes nowhere

peter jackson must have forgot to hire an editor

as regards over rated movies , i saw beowulf at christmas and loved it , it got slightly above average reviews upon release
you could also add in any jerry bruckheimer movie , i love both con air and armageddon infact along with king kong , armageddeon was the only time i ever shed a tear at the movies

I would add Peter Jackson's King Kong though I thought it was well reviewed.

The 2 Transporters. Havent seen the 3rd one yet.

Cellular. Has Kim Bassinger and Chris Evans in it.

Crank. Hopefully the sequel will be as good.

Mr Brooks. Kevin Costner, William Hurt as his alter Ego, Demi Moore.

Gotta agree with con air, think its a great action film.

Stanley Kubricks adaption of Lolita was enjoyable. It was really faithful to the tragi-comic aspects of the novel.

Midnight Sting from way back with James Woods, never mentioned anywhere but a nice little flick with a great cast. Not an award winner by any means but very likeable.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot from way, way, way back, with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.

I still say not enough people have seen The Third Man and 12 Angry Men. But they are not underrated to be fair. Oh and I'm talking about the 1957 version of the latter one.

    Birds by Alfred Hitchcock

I'm going too much for oldies here so I think I'll stop.:)

TBF I totally agree with you about Midnight Sting and the more recent version of 12 angry men is just a steaming pile of Cock compared to the 1957 version with Henry Fonda.

I always thought that Equilibrium got a very raw deal i'm sure I mentioned it on another thread last week. (I'll prob get done for spamming :D)

"The worlds fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins, I never remember this being in the cinema or hearing any hype about it, but what a film.

I recently saw The Passengers (2008), this was hardly advertised or I just didn't see the ads maybe but I really liked it. Did anyone else see it and what did u think?

I first saw this on release and again on sunday evening .For anybody intrested in the presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson and his administrations effort's to win the Vietnam war , this film is a very historical in dealing with that sad period in American history .The film is mainly concentrated in the white house and explores how Johnson was ill advised many times in his decision making to send more and more troops to win the war , a war that could not be won by conventional means . When Johnson took over the presidency, after Kennedys assassination, his main focus was to improve all aspects of american life by introducing what he called ' the great society ' which was a set of programmes designed to help all americans , black and white, rich and poor alike and Johnson saw the vietnam war as a side issue to be dealth with as quickly as possible . However , the war was to become the biggest issue in his presidency and forced him to put on hold most of the major changes he had in mind for the country .Michael Gambon play's Johnsons superbly ,and sometimes his ' serious ' comments to his staff are hillarious to watch .Alec Baldwin plays Defense Secretary Robert McNamara who was mainly responsible for encouraging Johhson to increase the troops and equipment to the war .This is a must see for anybody intrested in American politics ,specially the 60s period and the acting by all including Donald Sutherland is superb .

90% of the movies I've seen listed in this thread are rated lowly because they are tripe!
Can't belive the taste on some people, each to their own! (losers)

You can get it in Tower Records for just a tenner.

It's a movie I would happily watch once a week, but can't since there is so much else I wanna watch too. :D

I watched Breaking and Entering recently...it got very mixed reviews when it came out if I remember, and I can see why some people may not like it, but I really enjoyed it, I found it quite intriguing and kind of unsettling...

Half the movies on this thread are proper, cinema released movies or high profile DVD releases.....hardly underrated. Someone even mentioned Transformers for gods sake.

I would nominate The Lost Battalion, truly the Saving Private Ryan of WWI yet by the vast majority of people not only not viewed as such, but is totally unknown.

Another brilliant gem I saw recently was 2001 Maniacs, totally OTT slapstick gore-horror with plenty of T&A - just like they used to make them.

No doubt there are dozens more but I watch so many damn movies that I can never call to mind good examples at a whim.

That was indeed a very good film. Hadn't heard of it either until I saw it.

    Bulworth.

Almost nobody ever mentions this absolute gem which I think is one of the best films I've ever seen.

It was hugely acclaimed by the critics, but didn't seem to be widely released or publicised. Why, I just don't know ?

Highly Recommended for those with a cynical view of politics or those just needing a good laugh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,163 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I had to bring this up again, one of my fav subjects anyways.:)

But I have long been a fan of Cameraon Diaz, she has made lots of money now and all that but her second movie was was the one that made me a fan, a little gem that I remember so well.

If any of you have not seen it and like a US style black comedy this is definitely worth watching.

    Its called The Last Supper.

    Barry Lyndon.
Its respected but it never gets the props it deserves in comparison to Kubricks other movies. Strangelove, 2001, the Shining- these titles are always bandied about when discussions of Kubricks best film come up. All of the above are great movies but I think Barry Lyndon is his best. I didn't watch it for a long time because I had read that it was somewhat inferior to his best work. A cheap DVD came into my posession, well I've never been more pleasently surprised to be confronted with excellence. Strong story, absolutely stunning visuals,it seemed to me to be the high water mark of Kubricks vision as a director and the greatest illustration of his worldview.
And yet when all the souped up special editions of his movies were released last year there was no special edition for the movie. The vastly inferior Eyes Wide Shut got the special treatment, makes me shake my head and wonder.
