It's christmas... it's been like this for years.. what did you expect.

I don't think anything is opened on Christmas night.

It's christmas. Can you not give people one day off a year without whining about it? Just watch a dvd or something.

    what are halal centres? :)
im rather certain there are people around who wouldn't mind having to work during christmas, so why on earth should it make anyone angry that i ask?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 338 ✭✭electron

luckily im not out of cigarettes :P
but it just gets to me that every single place has to be the same and there's no emergency outlets open or anything.

That petrol station out in Terryland.

God bless immigrants with their weird and wacky religions. Most 24 Esso stations and the likes are open. Sandymount strand one is anyway.

But don't moan if we all take ONE day off a year!! Should have planned ahead and bought supplies so that you don't have to leave the house so you can spend time with your loved ones!!

Also, it's jesus' birthday - have a session in his honour man!!

I love the sheer panic that sets in on xmas eve when people buy 18 litres of milk in case they run out, or top the cars petrol tank up to the max when all they'll be doing is a few family stops, its one day people, relax!

Jigsaw is in Belfast...AFAIK they are not subject to outmoded religiously biased legislation re: their bar licensing laws and opening hours/dates, so he is perfectly entitled to have a pint on christmas day...and probably on Good friday as well, if his local can be bothered opening.

As for the topic at hand? Seriously if you can't prepare for what is at most 2 days of shut down over the holiday period then you deserve to go without.
It's always two extremes here: people either panic buy 2 week's worth of essentials or they don't buy anyhting and then moan about nowhere being open...don't retail business owners and their armies of employees deserve some quality time off like the rest of us?

Every try shopping in Lisburn on a Sunday?

Plenty of countries are far worse than Ireland when it comes to closing down on a religous day, whether the thing is religious now or not, or just traditional.

If Christmas day falls on a Monday in Germany you panic on Saturday Afternoon. Everything closes by 2pm.

If you read the context of my post, you'll notice that I was directly addressing the issue of drinking on christmas day and people saying that it was obviously against the law....but not the law in the UK. There's a perception on boards that if you're posting here you default to being from here; here being the Rep of Ireland.

As for the rest of your post, I agree...some of the trading laws in the North on a sunday are a bit off as well, but it's not against the law to open/trade for part of that sunday. You'll find in the more protestant areas they adhere more strictly to tradition and won't open, but in more neutral areas they'll open for as long as they can....this is specfic to NI, not the UK as a whole.
I can't speak for Germany, never been...but as with anywhere local oddities exist and can be planned around...

Mad as it sounds, the UK have not marked in Christmas Day as a Bank Holiday so businesses can trade normally if they so wish. There is still certain limits for retail hours in the UK on Sunday's unlike here in Ireland.

In fairness, we are largely a Christian Country and given it's importance, the country will pretty much stop on Christmas Day. I actually saw internet cafes, phone shops and even two barber shops on Clanbrassil Street open last Christmas Day; all operated by Muslim Staff. One lucky Mohammad was even getting a beard trim on the day :D You will see plenty of the Spar/Londis type shops open but in fairness we all can get stuck for something small or even the novelty of getting something on the day; I know I do:)

Pubs in the UK are not barred from opening any day of the year if they wish though it is down to local councils as to their specific hours of retail. Parts of Wales still have Sunday shutdowns as standard.
