Zavvi UK goes into Administration

Not a bargain alert, but may be of interest here.

Zavvi UK has gone into administration and is looking for
protection from creditors. Apparently Irish stores aren't
    affected for now.

Apparently its site won't be accepting orders, but don't
order anything from it either way.

How could Irish stores not be affected if the Company is in admin:confused:

Separate legal entities but as above think hard before parting with your cash

    Separate legal entities

But its all one company... Its not like Zavvi Ireland and Zavvi UK... Surely if the UK stores are sold then the Irish stores will go too?

I dunno, thats what the stories are saying. Presumably they pay their creditors locally and don't need protection? Either way, I wouldn't order anything. Buying in shops should be fine though.

Good auld sky news are saying its a direct result of Woolworths going under as woolies was their largest supplier!

Yep, both Zavvi and Woolworths were supplied by Entertainment UK..

Things are really getting a lot more serious than I expected. Woolworths, Zavvi down the toilet, and Toyota now making a loss..

    Hi,
I know the local store (Midlands) were not selling gift vouchers as they could not guarantee they would be around to honour them.

Have to say I liked their honesty, not too many others would be so forthcoming.. maybe a decent Jan sales coming...

They are not taking an more online orders, plus your vouchers are not worth less then the paper they are printed on.

"Zavvi UK has not ceased to trade and customers will be able to continue shopping at zavvi stores across the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, the zavvi website will not be taking any online orders and it will not be possible to redeem vouchers in store. Arrangements regarding returns and vouchers will be communicated separately."

Can't post a link to this because it look like the website is not offline as of 2mins ago.

    Edit:

Link from my proxy server: http://www.zavvi.co.uk/customer-message/i.jsf;jsessionid=C99B0DD09D450FB9CAA9A7A5DDD1FE65.app14

It is now returning the following error :
Oops, we seem to be having a few problems

because handing money to a company that can't pay it's suppliers is not a good idea. There is a decent chance you wouldn't see your goods.

They are currently not offereing refunds or exchanges in the UK either. If you can pay for something and get it in yourhand, fine. Otherwise give them a wide berth.

    From the website...

    Customer Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have a Zavvi gift voucher, can I redeem it?

It is expected that all customers who purchased zavvi gift vouchers from zavvi stores from 27 November 2008 will receive a full refund in respect of the unredeemed value of the gift vouchers. Unfortunately, it is not possible for vouchers to be redeemed in stores.

All customers who have unredeemed vouchers acquired since 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the following address, quoting their voucher number(s), enclosing the original voucher(s) and quoting their full name and address for return correspondence:

    zavvi Vouchers
c/o The Joint Administrators of zavvi Group
    Ernst & Young LLP
    100 Barbirolli Square
    Manchester
    M2 3EY

We recommend that customers keep a copy of vouchers for their records.

Regrettably, it will not be possible to refund vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008. Customers with unredeemed vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the above address, asking for their claim to be registered as an unsecured claim.

Please note, due to the large volumes of vouchers that are currently outstanding it is not possible to discuss individual customer queries in person at this stage

I had a zavvi voucher which I used in Dundrum today after hearing the news on sky. No problems with it however they are not selling any vouchers now.

Zavvi Ireland is not in trouble according to what I have heard.
However I'd say when people start avoiding it (as they do),
they may start to suffer as well.
I'm guessing there will be some big names going to the wall in the next few months after a couple of tough months.
    January will be interesting.

Why would people avoid buying something from a shop thats in trouble ie a Dvd,Blu-ray game etc??? Maybe buying a console but buying Media, i very much doubt it.

    Because preception is everything.

Even if zavvi as a whole was not in serious trouble (as it clearly is) bad news spreads much faster than good.

Yes, but I doubt people won't buy CDs orDVDs because a shop may or may not be closing down

Zavvi Ireland worker here (oh joy!). Stopped selling vouchers because "head office were out of stock" - looks like that was a little off :) Supposedly, Irish stores not affected (different suppliers) but it will probably be a case of if you can't pay your bills, you're gone.

Also, to act as a Bargain Alert - alot has been reduced. Those "Clearout Sale" posters you see on the news are also in Irish stores. Many DVDs are dirt cheap along with some games and cds...So if there is stuff you want to buy, do it soon!

    🤪

Cool and hope your job goes ok :)
Ultimately with the credit crisis a lot of companies are going to struggle in early January to get credit to pay their suppliers. That's it, game over. You can't run a retail chain with no stock, not even for a few days

I'm expecting lots of liquidations sales in this forum next year, good news for some of us but bad news for others

They actually have a pretty decent sale at the moment. Good few offers. Was in there today and i got a Ps3 DualShock 3 controller for only 40e and Linkin Park "Minutes to Midnight" for a fiver. I wouldnt not shop there because of this. Maybe not hardware, though

Interesting. I tried to buy gift vouchers in the Kilkenny store during the week and the girl behind the counter told me they were out of them.

No idea...Where I am (Limerick) we only have the Wii in stock. For the last while too there have been no deals, just the basic consoles.

My local zavvi has them below rrp at the moment. 80GB was €349. Can't remember the price of the xbox 360.

Our local Zavvi also isn't issuing gift vouchers this Christmas.. bit suspicious!

Plenty of DVD deals there yesterday

    Quadrophenia 2 disc version €4
    The Firm €2.99
    Morse Complete Collection €59.99
    Watchmen book €13

Would be a pity if they go under as they have improved a lot since the virgin days

That guy is a bargain troller, who undercuts any bargain thread he posts on. He's been banned twice this weekend already.

Was in zavvi recently and thought I'd report back my findings. Like someone said, they do have 2 for €30 on some blu ray but I'm not sure if all new releases are included in that. I got a few Blu Ray myself but spent more time looking in the DVDs as they are way cheaper! One thing to watch though is the box sets. Like, friends seasons are on sale at around 12€ I think, but you can get all ten for 65. (or 75 in HMV where I got mine as all the ones in zavvi had the boxes ruined)

I would recommend having a browse around though. Some really good deals to be found.

They are in provisional liquidation as of 30/12, sign up in my local zavvi, no vouchers honoured asked to contact liquidator. In a few days there will be some huge clearance sale to clear their stock. I'll miss zavvi a good shop

HMV are said to be eyeing up five of the eleven republics stores .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭pyramuid man

Wouldn't mind seeing that if only in limerick alone. The limerick HMV is claustrophobic at the best of times and at busy times completely devoid of air.

Zavvi in the crescent would be a good location for them.

Was in Liffey Valley yesterday. Some good deals on DVDs. There were a lot more BD titles added to the '2 for €30' they had pre-Christmas. This actual store seems to do well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

I've no idea, aparantly it was mentioned in the high court yesterday that hmv were in negotiations with zavvi to take on five of the stores, never said which five though.

on a semi related matter to the whole retailers going under, what is the story with ladybird, have they gone under along with woolworths?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭whatsupdoc?

The Zavvi in the Square went before Christmas, River Island took over the shop.

Woolworths own Ladybird and the administrators are currently trying to sell this off.

Is it Woolworths fault that Zavvi has gone into Administration? I always thought they did great business, even though their prices were brutal. Sad to see them go though. I bet HMV will take over the Zavvi in Athlone

Not necessarily Woolworth's fault, but it had a domino effect on Zavvi. Euk, which was part of Woolworths, was Zavvi's main supplier. Euk called in Zavvi's debt and they were unable to pay up. It's a shame since Zavvi have been doing so well since they changed from Virgin. Lets hope hmv save the day..
