RIDICULOUS

Why do so many people insist on spelling the word 'ridiculous' incorrectly? At present there are about 500 instances on Boards.ie where it is spelt ‘rediculous’.

    This is RIDICULOUS ;)!!

Unlike ourselves, these people don't realise that the word is a derivation of 'ridicule' in other words 'ridiculous' = subject to ridicule.

Don't expect the punters nurtured on playstations and mtv to understand that:pac:

Or they're just doing it to redicule those it upsets
yes, I know it's not spelt redicule, that was a joke

This one is really starting to get on my tits.

It has actually made me disagree with the content of the post purely on the basis of the spelling of the word.

I came across one earlier spellt redicilus (can't remember which forum though).

I can understand that you might need to hide your lack of education by supporting an 'anything goes' policy towards the spelling of words correctly.

Other people though, don't share your attitude, and prefer to abide by the rules of proper grammar.

Rules are there for everybody's benefit, and quite frankly, if you continue to ignore these mores, you run a grave risk of being encapsulated and an uneducated boor and a cracker.

    Choice is yours.

I think this thread reeks of snobbery and arrogance to be honest. I squirm at times when I see bad spelling, but I think to set up a thread complaining about other people's weakness at spelling is smug.

I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with that.
However I felt the reaction to fighting Irish was over the top.

Maybe it's humour but it seemed more like arrogance to me as I read through it. I, also, find bad spelling irritating, but I don't feel it is right to ridicule people who have misspelt. Can you imagine if you went on the politics/ sport forum and politicians or sports people adapted the attitude of 'these people don't realise that a rugby match is played in two halves' or whatever? It would be patronising and elitist and I wouldn't feel comfortable visiting that sight again.

I'm not tying to start an off-topic argument here. I love English and languages in general but I feel, for people who feel they have such a good command of the language, perhaps they could put their point across it in a way that is less insulting to others

I didn't flame anyone, i'm just making the point that a big majority of the people on the net don't really care about grammar while on the net.

Rather than alluding to ‘some people’, it would be more useful here if you could be more specific. Otherwise it is impossible to address whatever issues you wish to discuss, as it is unclear as to which posters you are referring.

    The Raven

I agree that the spelling is incorrect and this is the English forum, but it's the manner in which you (to a small degree) and FluterinBantam mock those who argue with you.

And can I add to that

FlutterinBantam himself made the mistake of typing 'mores' instead of 'rules' as SteKelly misspelt the word spelt!

This one is really starting to get on my tits.

It has actually made me disagree with the content of the post purely on the basis of the spelling of the word.

I came across one earlier spellt redicilus (can't remember which forum though)

and nobody told him to go back and get an education!

Fighting Irish is right. People on the Internet don't take as much care with spelling or grammar because expression at speed is more important. To suggest that 'these people" (as FlutterinBantam put it) are uneducated is just wrong and I find it offensive that it has been said on this thread.

    Just my point of view!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,048 ✭✭✭dolliemix

I'm not accusing you of having flamed anyone. But it is the case that people get treated in a fairly contemptuous way when they bring up issues of grammar, spelling, usage, &c., on other threads. You are surely aware that this is the case.

I'm not arguing with you on that point. But you have wandered onto the English forum, the charter of which states that: "This board is for the discussion of the English language and topics related to it." quote by Donegalfella

For the record, I love grammar, syntax and history of words. I would love to be a part of these discussions.I agree wholeheartedly to a forum where people can discuss grammar and spelling issues but I know that can be done without taking the superior and mocking approach towards others.

Thank you for your clarification. I will let the other posters speak for themselves. However, I stand by every word I said. I’m afraid the ‘mocking’ was done by Fighting Irish:
aslong as i get my point across, i couldn't give a fook

I think my response speaks for itself. If people continue to deliberately ignore the rules of correct grammar and spelling, the language will eventually fall apart and nobody will succeed in getting any point across. What is mocking about that?
    dolliemix wrote: »

I don’t agree. There are some excellent writers on the Internet, including Boards.ie, and speed is not more important than expression. Badly written posts are a waste of time. You have already said that bad spelling makes you 'squirm', yet you criticise others for discussing the same. That smacks of hypocrisy.

Neither would I, however there is a certain coterie of people who seem to think that driving a coach and four through the rules and accepted grammatical construction of language somehow makes them "cool".

There are those who think the use of textspeak for routine writing and reportage is acceptable.

People who adopt that attitude show no respect for the reader and ,in my opinion, the reader has every right to show no respect for them.

The standard of spoken English and written English, by and large, is appalling, and while I don't set myself up as an expert or any way superior, there is no way I will accept such rampant crap from anyone.

If I got that kind of standard in a CV for a job application, there is only one place it would end up,the thrash can.

I make no apology to anyone for holding those views.

When did it become arrogant and snobbish to respect and want to encourage the use of correct spelling and grammar? If you ask me the reverse snobbery on this subject is far, far worse. You literally cannot even comment on a spelling/grammar mistake annoying you on this or other sites without being accused of being a pedant, a dinosaur and myriad other names.

And then, even worse, you get the "I'm dyslexic, how very dare you!" brigade. I find it constantly startling that the percentage of dyslexics on the internet is so much greater than that in the general population...

It's not arrogant or snobbish to respect and want to encourage the use of spelling and grammar - but there is a way to 'encourage' people. Telling people who have have spelt something incorrectly that they are showing their lack of education is not very encouraging.

And yes, people do suffer from dyslexia and probably find it easier to contribute to internet forums anonymously than they have in real life, where they have possibly dealt with the stigma attached to it for years. People who are dyslexic see things differently to the standardised english that is studied universally. It is actually an amazing thing, but very frustrating for the learner. It is amazing how they learn to cope with their disability. I know a girl with dyslexia, if you write anything out backwards she can read it straight away, but cannot read standardised text. I think this is amazing! I also know a child who can only read something if it is printed on yellow paper.

Fair enough, give out about people who are lazy - dyslexia is not the same thing and should not be discussed as such. It is a disability and reading and writing are everyday challenges for these people. Would you talk about the 'wheelchair' brigade and put a 'rolleyes' smilie man at the end of your sentence?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

If people don't show me respect by making an effort, then I will show them no respect.

It's very easy to figure out who is dyslexic and who is just a lazy arrogant gimp.

    Very very easy.

i didn't bring up the subject of dyslexia - merely responded to another post. And I am all too aware of the bebo culture as a secondary school teacher myself. I agree with your sentiments regarding this culture. I, however, don't agree with a previous poster who said he /she was sick of people who claimed they were dyslexic in order to excuse bad spelling. I don't understand what is wrong with me having a problem with that? These people may genuinely be dyslexic. This is a problem that many people face daily, and should not be trivialised.... "as any English teacher in the country will quickly tell you!"
