RIght I need suggestions on a good bottle of whiskey, it's a present for the brother in law who is Belgian. I want to get something that is not very available over seas. Not jamesons paddy or powers... They are common. Any ideas? Not spending a fecking fortune either, so none of your 25 year reserve fancy unheard of sh!te ;)

    Midleton. €100+ a bottle though.

I don't care if the thread stays here or not but you'll fine a lot of people over in the Beer, Wine & Spirits forum who know a thing or two about whiskey.

You do really need to say what your budget is though. If you want something special yet don't want to 'spend a fortune' then try a bottle of RedBreast 12yr old at ~45€

Glenfiddich - High quality but at a reasonable price.
Well respected short by many drinkers and retailers around.

    Site: http://www.glenfiddich.com/lda.html?redirect=/index.html

You will pick up a bottle for about 40/45 quid.

With wertz on that one. Lovely whiskey, reasonable and independent so your cash is not going to the big boys

Tullamore Dew.......it's funny too because your brother in law is a jew.

And if he isn't.....give the whiskey to a jew so it'll be funny.

Seconded. Midleton Very Rare is fantastic stuff. It's €150 for a bottle, though well worth it in my opinion.

The Jameson factory reserve is about 50 euro and is a fantastic whiskey, almost as good as the proper Midleton imo. It's on sale at the distillery in Midleton but might be in the visitor centre in Dublin too.

    Tesco own brand Whiskey.

Would recommend Green Spot. A pure pot still Irish whiskey distilled by Midleton in limited numbers. Can get it in the Celtic Whiskey Shop for about €45 and is a very highly rated whiskey for the price.
    A very nice drink.

i have an 18 year old Glenfiddich at home bought in Bali a few weeks ago in duty free, that was $100. Most normal whiskeys, e.g. jameson, teachers, grants, black douglas, jonnie walker, etc. are all about $30/40, which is 15/20 euro, here in australia. How much is a bottle of whiskey now in ireland?

I'd also recommend something from Cooley. They have broken records with awards won this year. The Connemara as someone mentioned is another Cooley whiskey worth trying, it's peated though so it's not for everyone.

Edit/ I see the celtic whikey shop have it, I'll be including it in my next purchase.

VAT 69, if he is a Band of Brother's fan, he'll love this!

Connemara, a whiskey that even people that never tried whiskey before can enjoy. Also good for connaisseurs.
If you get a Scottish they are often overbearing and takes getting used to, i.e Laphroaig or Oban. Best in that case is Auchentoshan imo.

My personal favourite would be Green Spot. It's very similar to Midleton, but comes in a hell of a lot cheaper, so it's within your budget.

It really is a fantastic Irish Whiskey, and I cannot recommend it enough.

I can't believe that after the above list of whiskys and whiskeys that Bushmills has yet to be mentioned. (If I missed it whilst skimming over the posts then please jut shoot me now)
Try a 16 year single malt or if you are feeling a little more genorous go for the 21 year single malt.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Probably because you can get Bushmills all over Europe (even if it isn't the 12yr old version) and the OP is looking for an Irish whiskey that isn't 'common'
Not jamesons paddy or powers... They are common.

Which is funny as each of those whiskeys, along with Bushmills, have more expensive, more rare versions that would probably be perfect gifts...

You can get it in the old Dublin distilery too.

I'd go with a 12 year old red breast. Beautiful.

Redbreast 12 year old is definitely the best value for money, non standerd Whiskey on the market and is available in most supermarkets for aroudn 40-45 euro. This has been discussed over on the drinks forum in a best value for money thread and I think this was the common consensus.

The Jameson 12 year old is surprisingly dissapointing
