I know a few on here have an X5 or have had one in the past.

I've been considering one for some time and some are getting pretty cheap now. Even if they are a little old.

Anyway, recession, tax and any other gripes aside, what is this car like to own?

    What mpg does it return.

Only commenting on my mum's x5 which I drive when I need to drive.

Anyway, hers is an 05 one, nice spec level. Problem is she tends to pootle around town and so its fairly chock full of soot. Whenever I put the foot down it spits out a nice big cloud.

Its a very nice car to drive, she had an M-Class (02) before that and THAT car was woeful to drive. The X5 handles a lot more like a saloon than a big SUV.

However, you will quickly be reminded of its SUV credentials when the running costs arise. Hers consumes around 11.5 L/100km driving around town (according to the onboard computer) and costs about 80+ euro (it was over 100+) to refill.

My advice is get a 330 diesel instead. The X5 is nice but unless you have a thing about "high up" driving position (thats her logic) then it is pretty pointless.

I also don't like the auto box on it too much, that is where the mercedes would have been better for me.

Oh, IF you decide to go for one, make sure it is one with the sports pack!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭AlanD

    Thanks for that.

See I have a Peugeot 607 at the moment and I average 33mpg with mostly town driving. So something that averages the same would be great I guess.

The high up profile of the car would be a plus. I know the kids would love it. But the versatility of the X5 or any SUV would be great too. I do a lot of kayak racing and carrying boats, gear and sometimes where I have to travel to, a bigger more robust car would be nice. I test the ground clearance on my 607 quite regularly!

A 330d would be way too small for us. A 530d touring would be perfect but the wife hates estates. All she wants is a Q7, but we're several years away from affording one of those!!

I've heard too that a tuning box or something like that gives more power and better mpg.

i had the 4.4 V8 for a year, great car!
mpg for the diesel should be low 20's-25 max in the real world, dont forget it has to pull around 2 ton of weight, and thats just the jeep itself!

also, bear in mind, that the boot is actually quite small for the size of car. my dads camry has twice the boot space of my old X5.

have a look on the follwoing forums for real world help

Thanks for that. A little devil on my shoulder said to me, buy the V8 for 10 grand less and spend the rest on petrol.

What mpg did you get running the V8?

over the course of a year i returned 17mpg according to the OBC
i was blessed, i sold it in Feb for €26,500 (2002 Sport Model), i think i would be lucky to get 10k for it now :(

    ouch....

that would be over 2 grand in fuel extra a year over a 3.0d averaging 31mpg.

Back to the 3.0d search so.

where did you get your 31mpg stats?
BTW - what year are you looking at?

2001 3.0D had 184bhp and the newer lump upped to 215bhp iirc
i think the newer lump is also more effecient than the older one.

my figures for the 3.0D as 25mpg is the older 184bhp model, hence why i bought the petrol as the older model is underpowered for the weight of the car.

Ahh, you might like the extra space then. But it probably has similar space and luggage capacity to a 5 series touring.

Q7s are monstrous though and really a little too large.

    Go for the X5 so.

a guess based on what I've read around the net, of people getting certain mpg's in town and on the open road.

So for the purposes of comparison I picked 31mpg average, wasn't intending it to be an absolute figure though.

The newer engine came in Summer 2003 isn't that right? So that could be the target.

I just had a spin around by the local BMW garage to look at the boot. I actually don't think it's as big as my 607 and definitely not as big as my skoda!

I love the allroad, but feel the older ones are too expensive really. Plus it has that estate look which she doesn't like. Women, eh?

    A new wife? naaa....this one's perfect :D

The RR had been considered, but the wife hates that one too

I should mention that probably the car at the top of my list is another 607. I could land a 170 bhp diesel with not even 10k on the clock for about 20k. I love my 607.....99% of people don't know what they're missing :p

But, the ground clearance is a bit of an issue. Hence the look at the X5.

A neighbour of mine had one for about 8 mths......but sold it as kids kept getting car sick in the back. He said ride quality was awful.

Buy another 607, and a bog standard second hand old van (hiace, transit, or whatever) with good ground clearance for the same money as the second hand X5.

If ground clearance is the olny issue with the 607, get one again. I also think they are terrific cars.
Peugeot are very underrated cars, well some of them. (206/7, 406, 407 and the 607).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭AlanD

ground clearance is only a small problem really and one I can put up with. Yeah I love the 607 and for the money they are just awesome value and are a fabulous car to drive in. That 170bhp engine is perfect for it, if only it came with an auto box.

But still, the lure of the X5 is there given their current prices, knowing that they'll continue to plummet.

I'm on my third X5 and drive it most of the time, prefer it to the Q7 I have anyday. I chipped mine and get an average of 28.5 all the time however I drive it. Forget anything with a Landrover badge, they're truely awful in every respect, I had the misfortune of giving them a chance four times in recent years and each time they left me down big time, absolute rubbish and I wouldn't say that lightly. You won't go wrong with an X5, I love my one.

As a matter of interest, what mpg would you get on a long out of town trip?

My 607 averages 33mpg at the moment, but I know on the long trips it hits almost 50mpg, so the averages only tell part of the story.

I'd say at best mid-30's to the gallon, I never really worked it out it's just what the computer tells me really but very reasonable all the same. As regards Land Rovers and Range Rovers Limerick-man, I've had electrical, gearbox, engine and body work just fall apart, suspension failures, back axel and diff. failures and when I traded I lost a fortune on them. I've never once had a problem with the X5 although they can be a bit heavy on rear tyres if you don't keep an eye on the tracking.

What did you have if you don't mind me asking? I'd say you'll loose an arm and a leg on any X5 sold or bought in the last year.

I had Discoverys from 1995 to 2006, i had Range Rovers from 1984 to 2007, petrols and diesels and wouldn't touch them ever again. The best of the bunch was a 2006 RR sport but the X5 is superior on the road by a mile.

Im on my second X5. My first was a 06 3.0d Sport and I loved it. I loved the driving position and it had great poke when I needed it. Realisticlly I got 26-28mpg out of it. The tank is about 90ish litres and on average you would get about 480 miles to a tank.

I changed in Feb this year and got the new model. Totally different ride and more like a car.

Shop around, a friend of mine was looking for one recently and I also saw a 04 sell to the trade for about 28k so you should be able to pick up a loaded '04 x5 3.0d Sport for the low 30's!

They're all duds as far as I'm concerned, friends of mine had them too and had similar problems and all converted to X5's, the Defender is ok if your looking for a workhorse/tractor but for everyday use they're a bit rough. As regards tuning chips, it's like adding another turbo to it and almost an extra 100mpg per tank, I think I did the sums some time back and that's what it worked out like. I'm not a big fan of the new X5 styling tbh but it might grow on me in time.

Why not buy a nice 5 series estate?? Makes more sence - there more aerodynamic so in all probability better fuel consumption. Better resale value; most people dont want a 25-30mpg suv anymore. They dont look as good half as cool aswell..........
I'm struggling to see any advantage the x5 has over a 5 series estate apart from the ride height!!!
    Can someone convince me otherwise?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

I've had both and the 5 series is quite limited if your doing any work like towing etc. The ride height is great in the X5 too and there's no doubt you are safer in an SUV too. I wouldn't go back to a car as my regular mode of transport, to hell with the greens I say!!!!!!!!!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭AlanD

I really like the E60 5 series estate alright, but the wife isn't a fan of any sort of estate which is a pity. I could really do with estate style space for the paddling.

It's possible that the X5 would be a little harder on juice than I would really like, but I will do the sums and see if it all adds up. It possibly could.

I reckon some real crackers will come up for good money at some stage in '09 alright. The min requirement would be the facelifted post '03 version, xenons, sport, leather, wouldn't say no to nav either.

I agree with you. I just can't understand why you wouldn't buy an estate if you are looking for the extra space. I just do not see any advantage of the X5 over a large Estate car.
Estate car has more space inside, especially in the boot, can carry higher load (my old Mercedes estate can take nearly 700kg on board + 2100kg trailer), has self leveling rear axle (great system if you take the extra load and add more comfort), much better aerodinamics, better fuel economy with the same engine, better acceleration, better brakes, better resale value, is usually equipped with cheaper tires and other cheaper parts, is lighter, it handles better, it is usually cheaper to buy and it looks lovely. A classic estate looks fantastic with a windsurfing board on the roof :). If you need the 4x4 facility, but I don't believe you do - get a 4 wheel drive estate (BMW, Mercedes or Subaru Outback - in this one you get even raised ground clearance). What more do you want?

as I've previously said, I like estates, she doesn't. We both have to be happy with the purchase since we both will be paying for it. So a compromise is in order. I totally agree with you though.

I'll probably just end up buying another 607! haha. I've managed for 3 years now with one. I can land a 607 with about 10k on the clock with xenons, nav, electric everything and a nice twin turbo engine for about 20k including vrt.

An outback would be nice, but the diesels are too dear. I love the new legacy estate too, but alas, she doesn't.

So I've just been looking in to the X5 because of their price crash. I like the sound of it and if fuel consumption stacked up for what we do, then I'd consider one. I'll go test drive one in January and taunt some poor sales man thinking I'll actually buy it.

No it's gold/beige. For a long time I had roof bars and a big v-bar for the boat on it. Looked hideous but served a purpose! Took the roof bars off recently though cos I haven't the time to train/paddle. New baby on the scene.

i don't really need a "proper" 4x4. I view all these as cars and don't care whether they sit tall or not or whether they can plough through the amazon rain forest or not. I like function, form, driveability, reliability and that something else that sets a car apart. I love my 607 because few people have them and they are a nice place to be when driving around. The X5 wouldn't be so exclusive, but still....I'm liking them at the moment.

To be honest, I do believe that the X5 with the Diesel engine is not too bad for fuel economy in a long jurney. Of course it is not as good as any estate, but not really bad. Town driving is a different game.

If you can, talk to your wife and show her the new Subaru Outback - it is fine car really and it sits higher as well...

I brought her out to see the new legacy estate, same thing, but she just didn't like it.

Yeah town driving will never give good mpg. I get about 22mpg from my other car around town and about 30mpg from my 607 around town. We do very little town driving anyway so it's no big deal. The majority of my miles come from a dual carriageway trip to work for my wife (I work at home), trips to Letterkenny for my own work, trips to the folks houses and trips to kayak races around the country. So mostly inter urban travelling at cruising speed. With the chipping that junkyard talks about, an X5 would seem like a reasonable car to own.

Ha, ha, ha, proper 4x4's being a trooper, disco, RR, or a pajero? I think not. Ye must be big into hardship with tractormobiles like them landyman.:) They're probably fine if you have to cross fields or mountains to get to work. My X5 works for a living and tows regularly and does the job fine.

My apologies. I do agree that my comment was unbecoming, especially seeing as it's Christmas. I just very much loathe the ignorant perception that because SUV's are high up it means that they are automatically safer. I have therefore deleted the comment out of my own goodwill.

    Merry Christmas by the way!:)
