Given that Christmas is rapidly approaching, who's on for a few polls to mark the highlights of the year.

    Suggested categories are:

Boards Cycling Moment of the Year: Wicklow 200, Ring of Kerry, Alps trip etc.

Cycling Personality of the Year: Possible nominees could be TinyExplosions (for organising the boards jerseys), niceonetom (for singlehandly creating a crimewave against traffic cones), Caroline_ie (for rounding us all up to do a Fantasy Tour de France), Blorg (for being Boards Mr. Mileage amongst other things).

Best Crash: I think several people will have multiple nominations on this one.

Nicest Bike Posted On Images of Beauty:

    Poser/Euro of the Year:

    Most ridiculous cycling related purchase:

Alright, if folks are interested, give your nominations in this thread and any suggestions for further categories.

Most entertaining "you turn me on" post/thread of the year?

Best self-built bike of the year (points for budget/where original frame was "found"/attention to detail, etc.)?

    Most likely to take EPO?

Most likely to beat Blorg up the Glandon (as if we didn't know by now!)?

    Best helmet hair? *ahem*, *cough*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

Boards Cycling Moment of the Year : The kilbride walk of death.

Nicest Bike Posted On Images of Beauty: Mine of course (suspect everyones opinion on this will be a bit biased)

Best Crash: I think this will HAVE to be the 6-in-one

Lifetime achievement award for crashing : Blorg

    Forgotten friends : Kona

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭unionman

    Loudest lycra

Biggest Whinger (me on the Martin Earley tour, about the only nomination I'd hope for)

Slowest climb (actually me again, last one up Sally Gap as I recall. Sorry Caroline!)

    King of the Mountains

Most likely to need bionic replacement in the future (unless of course blorg already has some. In which case, sorry again Caroline!)

    Funniest thread / post

    Scariest cycling story posted

    Fastest descent (?)

Most outrageous 'Zen' claim about fixed gear cycling

Cycling Personality of the Year: TinyExplosions

    Best Crash: 6 in 1

Nicest Bike Posted On Images of Beauty: Quigs Cervelo

Thread of the year is a good one. Forgot about that.

King of the mountains should be fun too. Can imagine a bit of a fight over that one.

    I like Best Legs too.

Lots of categories proposed. We need more nominations though for each category to work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

I propose a rule on not being allowed to vote for yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

    I agree with categories of
    • Personality - Nominate Tiny
    • Best Crash - Unfortunately I've missed out on most of these. Nominate Caroline and Blorg. Can one have two nominations?
    • Nicest bike - Can one nominate oneself?
    • Poser/Euro - Tonto, although Raam and Tunney are up there too.
    • King of Mountain - May have to take this to the road to have a convincing victor.
    • Best Thread - Helmet Head perhaps?

I oppose such categories as "most likely to X" on grounds that they sound like something from an American graduation yearbook thing.

Agreed, but we should let Ken off since he was smart enough to get in there before everyone else copped.

Woohoo! thank you sir, you have my vote in some category :)

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

I'm nominating Raam for poser. I've never met Tunney in the flesh.

I nominate rogerb for King of the Mountains.

Six in One has to be up there for the crash award, although Tiny's spill on an Orwell spin was pretty mad too.

Helmet Head gets my vote for thread of the year.

Absolutely -the style in which you do it is as important...

best crash (or post crash) photo

    worst crash (most idiotic)

worst cycling related injury (Caroline may have that, though Blorg could come close)

My metal-studded tyres take some beating on that score.

Particularly since I had to buy a new cyclocross bike to have something on which to mount them.

eta: arse, no voting for oneself. Does that get me a nomination for "most narcissistic", or will that suggestion itself trigger a spacetime-wrecking recursion?

Yeah, BMI wont work, mine is coming out at 21.1, or "perfect" (which I am!)

Best self-build fixie? It was easy enough to get these nominations together, cos they're all in the one thread

    Sean K's blinding white bike

    Verb's Banana

Niceonetom's Capo (before he butchered it).

    El Tonto's Pista Concept (slurp!)

    Niallface's Black & White baby.

Right, lets see what we have so far. I've taken the liberty of merging some categories, keeping in my own original nominations. I've left out any categories we had one or no nominations for.

    Cycling Personality of the Year:
TinyExplosions (for organising the boards jerseys)
niceonetom (for singlehandly creating a crimewave against traffic cones) Caroline_ie (for rounding us all up to do a Fantasy Tour de France)
blorg (for being Boards Mr. Mileage amongst other things)

Boards Cycling Moment of the Year:
    Wicklow 200
    Ring of Kerry
    Alps trip
    The Kilbride death march.

    Best Crash:
Six in One - six fall on the ice in Sandycove. Two broken bones result.
    Blorg's spill near Glencullen.
    Caroline_ie's high speed effort.
TinyExplosions' fall at the lights on his first club spin.

    King of the Mountains:
    rogerb
    Raam
    niceonetom
    blorg

    Nicest Bike:
    Quigs Cervelo
    Kenmc's Planet X
    Sean K's blinding white bike
    Verb's Banana
    Niceonetom's Capo
    El Tonto's Pista Concept
    Niallface's Black & White baby.

    Poser/Euro of the Year:
    El Tonto
    Raam
    Tunney

    Most ridiculous cycling related purchase:

    Penexpers Surly
    Penexpers Dahone

    Best Thread

Should cyclists pay Road Tax & Insurance?

hey hey, careful now. my bike ain't "off the shelf" - as it stands the only original components are the frame/fork, headset, and seat-post collar. everything else (wheels, cranks, BB, finishing kit etc. is after market). even the paint is gone ffs. though it's about to get yet another facelift whenever i get some time. pics to follow :D ...

i'm sure tonto would object to his build being called off the peg too. each component was chosen with love before being inexpertly hammered on with a shoe.

i nominate Tiny as "chief-bottle washer"; blorg as "least euro" (sorry man - the sandles); Raam as "KOM"; emty as "most willing to sacrifice his dignity to get a good photo"; tonto as "best poster"; caroline_ie for "most dramatic improvement in a a single season" (there could be competition there from unionman though, ROK too maybe?); flickerX for "resident reactionary bastard" (hey- i can't vote for myself right); ...

there are more, but i'll have to get back to you with them when i have more time.

    nice work El Tonto.
Would it be worth trying to have a couple more performance (probably not the most suitable term) related ones?

    I.e. fastest, strongest....

    Also: best descender

Good suggestions. I thought about Ba's crash alright, but since he was pretty badly hurt in it I wondered if he thought it would be in poor taste? And surely rogerb deserves a nomination in the rouleur category rather than sprinter? Emty for KOM too? He was climbing like a demon by the end of the year.

Best improvement is a good one. Frank Grimes for his comeback from surgery?

Oh yeah, and footpad is a classic thread.

Concussion or broken wrists don't count as badly hurt and poor taste? I do take your point though

Agree on Emty for KOM, and Rogerb for roleur -was joking on the sprinter, we all know he can't!
