PDF size question - changing artwork to affect filesize?

    Hi folks,

    Kinda a n00b question, so hope you can help.

    SCenario - Coloured Artwork (page background) is saved from TIFF into PDF, and we try and compress it as best we can, while keeping clarify.
    If we change the original artwork to just black and white / remove unneccesary shaded boxers etc..., will the PDF file size be smaller when we reduce it then?
