wthax.org - image hosting

Just going to put this thread up here for questions, etc regarding http://wthax.org, the really hastily scripted image hosting site that has been happily serving people's sigs and *hilarious* lolcat pictures since 2005.

I'm posting this partly because since last month the site has been getting hammered with all sorts of asian language uploads, I've no idea what half of them are, but the other half is porn. I've had to start using a whitelist model as I couldn't keep up with blacklisting.

    So the allowed refers are:

    Boards.xx sites
    Adverts.ie
    Eirtaku.com
    SomethingAwful.com

If you use wthax.org for your site and would like to be added to the whitelist, first off apologies for having to whip the rug out from under you, and second post your site here so I can add it to the whitelist.

    Thanks.

wthax.org kicks ass, and I thank you sincerely for it. It's like Tinypic.com was before it became a load of toss.

PS. Hope I wasn't anything to do with the mentioned problems.. I've only started using it in the last month or so =/

Cheers, no you're nothing to do with the problems, just some crowd of spammers in Taiwan uploading a lot of porn.

I might take a chunk of time somewhere to revise the codebase again, the current one was unfortunately birthed in -dev when I accidentally deleted the entire source tree of the original! I haven't really fiddled with it since getting it up to bare minimum "it'll do" standard :) Plan is to keep it simple and clean. If it ever gets to the point that I can't afford to maintain it, I'm told Boards.ie Ltd will happily take over running costs, so I'll never have to spam people with ads or awful thumbnail branding or trick links, or any of the other crap image hosting sites tend to do.

*added those to the whitelist now btw*

Ta. Is wthax sorta.. open source? I mean, there's a free digiweb.ie offer for a year's .org hosting and I wouldn't mind having my own similar service except one that saves the images into a little album for me. Although if I wasn't so lazy I could just add a tag to everything I upload on wthax.. and I can't come up with a domain name that I like :(
Even tried a random string generator, xkcd style.

It's not, but even if it was, the code is a mess, and hardcoded to work under the particular nuances of dreamhost.

This is the evolution of the script I initially used when I set up the site. Apparently they've had some financial difficulties or something reading the news. Always had problems as far as I was concerned.

This is another fairly basic script you might want to try, although as a caveat, I haven't looked at the code since uploading it in 2006 or whenever it was. Runs quite happily at http://images.wthax.org still though.

Aye CuLT reason for that was the link was 404 for ages hence when I was modding the site I removed it, but I didn't know they had a .org site now.
It seems a friend of the owner bought the domain and are hoping to get things running again. Good news indeed.

    Sure, done.

Also, for the curious, I'm planning out entirely rewriting wthax.org from the ground up again, if there's features you'd like to see, now's the time to ask.

This, if possible. And please, CuLT, retain the beautiful simplicity of the current set up.. cheers.

Hosting provider moved all my stuff and broke half my scripts, don't have time to look at it now, so wthax.org isn't accepting new images right now.

I like the simplicity of the site. It is handy but I tend to use another site because of the ability to resize images.

Any chance you might add in an option to resize, even if it was only to one option?

The ability to find your own images again would be handy also.

Yeah, it could do with a serious update alright; will have to carve out some time for it soon.

    Howdy,

I've made a couple of (mostly unnoticeable) changes to wthax.org over the last couple of weeks, mostly to do with removing porn.

This has allowed me to reopen hosting to "all" sites, so a site doesn't need to be on the whitelist anymore for you to be able to link to it.

One thing I've decided to do is cut off all the images in the "wthax.org/images" directory, which was where images were originally stored pre-2008. While I don't like having to do this, a lot of the "images" in there were actually scripts, or images with strange characters, etc, and I don't have the time to manually review every one of them.

If you have a specific image that you would like "retrieved" (you don't have it yourself anymore) and know the URL, let me know here and I'll see what I can do about recovering it.

I've started doing some basic caching and setting expires, simple stuff that should improve the general responsiveness of the site.

Hosting will likely be moving too, and getting quite a bit faster.

Eventually, when I get around to "rewriting" the codebase, all of those annoying errors for certain uploads/transloads/tags will be gotten rid of too.

CuLT, this is the image hosting script I mentioned to you - http://chevereto.com/ - in case there's anything in it of interest to you.

Sure, available here now (same image name, just with the omg. prefix).

Edit: that's not the same image name at all, silly me.

Hah, what a completely impossible to remember name indeed :)

Looks cool, might make my life a lot easier, cheers!

Ever considered doing an API? Would be really useful (to me anyways )

I'm certainly amenable to the concept - what would you like to be able to do?

I'm just having a nightmare trying to get the post headers to upload an image correct in C#.

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

Well, a more immediate solution might be to use the imgur API if you're not particular about where you want to put images, it's basically the same service as wthax.

Edit: I'll likely add an API after the current set of revisions I'm working on.

Any thoughts on how to post embedded images on Boards from an iPad? I have used wthax on the PC and it works really well (thanks CuLT) but the option of browsing files is greyed out on the iPad. Any help appreciated as I may want to post some cycling photos while away in France.

Until there's a boards or wthax app on the cards then it's not gonna happen from an ios device unfortunately.

Best bet is to email them to someone who can post them for you.:)

    What happened?

Can't elaborate right now, but the basic issue is that I don't have the time to deal with problems that arise with the service.

Apologies to the folks it inconveniences!
