Christmas Group Buy

I'd suggest those interested respond quickly. Going to be competing with Christmas postal issues, so the sooner we order the better.

I'd suggest ordering from one of:

    http://www.49thparallelroasters.com/
    http://www.paradiseroasters.com/

But if anyone has any other suggestions I'm fairly easy.

Whichever is fine with me. I mailed Stumptown, they said they'd look into fed-ex if we were interested either.

I'd hop on board either 49th or, especially, Stumptown if it's a possibility.
Was in Portland last year and enjoyed their coffeeshops.

I'm in, 49th would be interesting...

I'm in. Don't know much about either but i'd like to try something different to my usual.

If we can come to some sort of consensus then over Stumptown Vs 49th, we can make our move - we have more than enough people.

Flip a coin so, I know nothing about either, but will take your guidance! :D

What kind of money are we talking about, folks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,473 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Just checked 49th - for 14lbs of coffee, the shipping (with UPS) is CAD107 - €67ish.

If that was split 7 ways, it would be very reasonable.

Price for the coffee varies, but 1lb of their espresso blends are CAD 16 & 17. - €10ish. So it would be about €30 for 2lbs incl shipping.

For me, personally, I'd want to buy some of their Ethiopian single origins as well. Been a stunning year for Ethiopians, and they have Aricha & Beloya lots (for about CAD30), as well as some more reasonable Ethiopians (around CAD20).

Shipping and duty costs in any case would be split depending on weight and price of what individuals ordered (as usual).

Of course UPS would no doubt add on duty charges on top of that, which would probably be in the order of €10 - 15 a head.

    Right - if it's 49th , I'll opt for the following:

    Organic Ethiopia Yergacheffe Beloya 12oz
    49th Parallel Coffee Roasters® Epic Espresso 2lb
    49th Parallel Coffee Roasters® Organic Espresso 1lb

What do you brew? Espresso / french press / filter etc?

Also - are you in Limerick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭kencleary

Didn't someone discover last time that coffee is zero-rated for VAT and/or duty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,616 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Mainly espresso at the moment, topped up sometimes to an americano for something that lasts longer (if that makes a difference :)), and yep, I'm in Limerick.

It is, but UPS don't care. We could argue the point, but by the time it was resolved, the coffee would be stale.

    @Mr E
How would we get the coffee to you once it arrived? An extra shipping step? If I remember correctly - you're using an Aeropress is that right? I'd probably recommend some of the single origins, one of the Ethiopians and maybe a South American for contrast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,616 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Ah is this one of those l33t Dubs-only group buy schemes? :)

Yep I'm using the Aeropress at the moment.
I'd be happy to pay for the extra shipping step (if you don't mind).

Actually on further investigation roasted coffee is subject to import duty from both USA and Canada. It's only 7.50% though so it might be worth contacting the courier company to make sure they know and apply that.

Also rather annoyingly it's duty free when bought from virtually anywhere else on the globe.

I don't mind at all, we can work out the details, but I reckon it shouldn't cost that much, even for next day delivery within Ireland.

Sounds like 49th maybe the prefered option. Are you happy enough to be the receiver for this order RE*AC*TOR?

If you are then would you like to set a weight limit per person or for the total order in case you want to come in under the 14lbs UPS target?

14lbs was just to get a rough idea. People will pay proportionally to the weight of ordered goods, and as far as I can tell, the bigger the order, the shipping cost per unit goes down.

If we're happy enough to go with 49th (maybe Stumptown in the new year), then if everyone can decide what they'd like, we'll get the ball rolling.

The UPS Saver Service seems to be 1-3 day, which translates as 3 day. So it would probably best if it was shipped on a Monday or Tuesday (to avoid 2 days in a warehouse at the weekend). As it's now Tuesday, it might be best if the order was arranged for shipping next week. I could drop 49h an email to this extent.

I'm happy enough to be donkey again.

    Hey,

    Sorry for the delay, I'll have;

    Organic Ethiopia Yergacheffe Beloya
    Costa Rica Cafetalera Herbazú Estate

    Ta!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,473 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Yes, open to all. Payment in cash to me on meeting / collection. We did Paypal once, but it was messy with fees, and then the extra custom charging nonsense.

With regards to meeting, we'll arrange it closer to the time, but I'll try to be as flexible as possible, though with this size of an order, I may forgo postman duties. But we'll sort it out.

Anyway I've emailed 49th, it's only 11 am over there, but if they haven't replied by tomorrow morning I'll give em a phone call. Try to arrange for everything to be posted next Monday / Tuesday - with us Thursday / Friday.

The supply I bought in for the Christmas period is already seriously diminished. I'll be glad to get this batch in, looking forward to it.

Due to be roasted & shipped today - still only early morning in Vancouver so it will be late tonight Irish time when they are hopefully shipped.

Shipping cost for the whole order was CAD$120.

Will break it down over the next day or two.

Coffee has arrived. Rushing off to post office now to get Mr E's coffee off.

UPS didn't ask for any customs charges up front, so nothing to pay on that.

If I get a bill down the line, I'll let you all know.

Anyone wants to come out to Castleknock to pick their coffee up that would be great. Otherwise we'll coordinate some meets.
