Hello this seems to be the correct place to ask this.
Ive recently given up smoking and Im hoping to get fit again. I used to really enjoy cycling wheni was younger not competively but just seeing how far I could go in what time.
problem is now Im so unfit I would be ashamed to be even seen cycling around the place.
Is there anyway I can start to build up my fitness without making a fool of myself ie in private.

Get out your bike! Honestly, have you looked at some of the people cycling round town? There's no way you could be in worse shape. In any case, at this time of year, all cyclists are so bundled up you can't tell the difference between Ronnie Coleman and Ronnie Corbett.

Walking is a good general way to build up fitness. Stand tall, pump your arms (punch back with your elbows to make your back muscles work), take short strong strides and walk faster than is comfortable.

At home, climb stairs at every opportunity, dance to loud rock music, do a bit of sparring, and do some squats, lunges and press-ups. Try doing as many as possible in 20 seconds, rest for 40 seconds and repeat. Harder than it sounds and you'll get results.

If you have a bit of cash in hand, what about a turbo trainer? This turns your road bike into an indoor training bike, so you can cycle while watching tv.

+1 to Eileens advice .. dont worry about what anyone thinks.. most of the people who stare / pass comments at people out running, walking and cycling are just envious because they cant or wont make an effort .. anyone who is into exercise or fitness wont even give a second glance :)
