Unless they manage to pull back a heroic 11 votes it appears they're doomed to finish last in the album of the week thread so I thought I'd start this. Easily one of my favourite bands they've released 2 absolute top quality albums in a row. A little unfairly tarnished as Emo, they have a maturity in their lyrics, valting guitars and three vocalists which make them sound really really unique, kind of like a better Jimmy Eat World.

Deja Entendu is a lot more accesible than the Devil and God are Raging inside me and is a great album in it's own right but TDAGARIME is the real treat. Really hard to get into but once you do it is phenomenal. The song structure in some of the songs (like Limousine (MS Redbridge)) is better than anything I've heard outside of Verdi. Where Greenday and Weezer ran out of gas half way through and seemed so unatural in their attempts Brand New make it seem like second nature. Couldn't reccomend them highly enough. Just wondering are their any other fans out there bar Xavi6 (but you can feel free to sing their praises too ;))

    Okay I believe you

    Limousine (MS Redbridge)

I think Devil... is one of the best albums going, but I didn't think much of their other albums. Very average.

Same. Not a huge fan of their other stuff, but listening to God and Devil atm from a recommendation by a friend and its very good.

Yup, first two (especially the first) albums are largely forgettable. Third album is fantastic.

I would recommend The Early November if you like Brand New.

Yeah I'm a big fan of these guys too, two last albums were terrific, even the first one was quite good, considering it was written when Jesse was 17, they've developed nicely as a band, moving in a solid progression.
Saw them last year in Dublin, must say they're live, and they played deja in its entirety!

Three Vocalists? not really, just the guitarist and bassist doing backing vox - nothing new there really...

Oh if you do like em check out Manchester Orchestra too!

    !

Sic Transit Gloria certainly has three vocalists who all hold their own and their are certainly some other examples, think Jude Law has the same kind of structure towards the end

Their vocal arrangements are pretty class tho, all the various layers going on, it is quite different...

'Deja Entendu' is their best album for me. Some absolutely stunning songs including 'The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot', 'The Quiet Things That No One Knows', 'Okay I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't' and 'Geurnica'. I don't think there's a song I dislike on that album.

'The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me' is also fantastic, but just not as good as the above for me.

Used to really be into them. I loved their first 2 albums. Your Favourite Weapon is my favourite. Haven't really caught up to them after that. I still enjoy their songs from time to time but I should really try the new one.

    whiney emo shoite,

why is it all the music i like is black?

    whiney emo shoite,

why is it all the music i like is black?

Too many bands who don't sing about sunshine and lollipops get thrown into the emo genre when both Brand New and The Early November are considered Alternative & Punk.

Emo genre is a myth anyway imo. What's emo short for anyway? It's short for emotional. Now that's strange considering every music under the sun is emotional in some way.

I am in love with Brand New, I think they are amazing. They are amazing lyricists, and they sing with so much emotion I think it's very hard for their music not to strike you in some way.

My favorite album is a toss up between Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside me. Very hard to pick but every single track on Deja Entendu is quality.

My Favorite Weapon is brilliant, but I think in general it's harder to get into.

I bought myself a fight your demons t-shirt a while ago, but it got ruined in the wash after 3 times in the machine :''''''(
    whiney emo shoite,

Give it a proper listen, it's not. I think you are in the wrong forum anyway. Jog on.

Deja it definitly a bridge between the 1st and 3rd album, I really dislike your new fav, but Deja has some really great songs its just a little harder to get into than the devil and god

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,020 ✭✭✭Ardscoil Ris

Despite the excellent The Devil and God... and The Early November I believe Nada Surf have surpassed both with three amazing albums after they were labelled one hit wonders in 1993.

Check it out they are excellent. Recommended for fans of Brand New as they have that layer of melody in their songs like Brand New.

I'm sorry Brand New fans but these guys are the kings. Well for me they are, music is all a matter of opinion.

    Enjoy!

    I am sad now :(

Brand New only have one good album though and a lot of people would agree with that it's just that The Devil... is so good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,121 ✭✭✭Censorsh!t

    Absolutely amaaazing.

The Devil and God are raging inside me is such a great album.
Your favourite weapon is under rated in my opinion... i mean, it's quite different and more immature compared to the devil and god, but it is still great.
They just got better with each album.
And Jesse Lacey has to be one of the best lyricists about. He puts so much effort and passion into his work. And they are amazing live too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

I only ever really listened to Jesus Christ. I thought that was an amazing song, don't know why I didn't follow up on them

Good call btw, Ace Enders is awesome!!

I can see myself getting seriously into these guys as soon as i get something of them onto my itunes. I can see bits of Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer kinda mixed together.

    Limousine is an amazing somg!:O

EDIT: @ OP i can see where they get the emo tag from. Im not saying that they are, but just that i can see why other people would call them emo

My new favourite Brand New song is 'The Archers Bows Have Broken', Absolutely amazing tune.

New single is out and it keeps the quality control up. Sounds a bit like Kings of Leon for the first 10 seconds but luckily that bull**** stops

I like that a lot. Good tune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭JoePie

So far its a lot more listenable than Devil and God. Reminds me of the demo sessions that were leaked for Devil and God. Most of which were good, and only the bad one ended up in Devil and God.

Saw these guys at Glasto. They really needed a few more upbeat tunes to get the crowd going, they didnt finish well at all

One of the most dissapointing albums I have ever heard. Up there with Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

agree to some degree feel this one might be a grower though, but for sure there aint no jesus , guernica, or mixtape on it. At the bottom was as close to those on it as i've heard , it surely not as instant as those before so might grow on my with time

I don't think so. For me Devil and God was a grower but that's understandable because the songs were long, complex and layered. Here they're just short emo by numbers songs with far too much inaudible screaming. At the Bottom is great but everything else is such a step down

So Be Here Now wasn't enough of an indicator for you?

Granted was a bit drunk and stoned when I first heard the album, but always reckoned it's a good litmus test. Sounds great to my ears - will take a bit more time than The Devil and God (which was an uneven album anyway), but seems like they've brought the whole time-change ala Mars Volta thing on very nicely from Limousine.

You Stole and At The Bottom are immense, also like what's happened with Gasoline.

First listen to Daisy, severely disappointed. Don't think I have ever been so disappointed with an album.

    A few more listens maybe...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭snazzy

TDAGARIM is one of my favourite albums ever. If not my favourite.
I started with that so found Deju Entendu a little bit immature but having listened to both I could really appreciate the leap they took and how their sound totally progressed.

I could go on for ages but to the OP, no you are not alone in loving them. Excellent band. Stand above most other bands in their genre.
Mind you haven't heard their new album yet. Will have to see about that one,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,121 ✭✭✭Censorsh!t

I've been listening to Daisy for 3 days now...and don't know what to make of it...it's very different...but then again all their albums are different to each other...

I do love At The Bottom. And I do like Bought A Bride.

The sounds are strange...it's like bits are bluesy or something.
The lyrics arent so captivating on this album, unfortunately.

But...I'll give it time, maybe it will grow on me...I hope!

Im thinking of going to see em in January at wembley arena (this is presuming they don't come to our fair isle)
ticketmaster don't seem to have any standing tickets left, where should I go?

(not too off topic i hope)

havent listened to new album yet, love the rest of their shtuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭ADTR

Listening to "Daisy" for the first time. Liking it. Definitely a grower. Brand New's best album so far in my opinion. Could be also their last if the rumors of an impending break up are to be believed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 SkullzNfangs

i can't believe brand new aren't more popular by now...i love how they almost sound like a different band with every album but still keep that same essence of what they are :) i was listening to the 'devil and god today..' again and was just amazed by how much they'd matured from deja entendu...i'll listen to daisy as soon as i can,i've been looking forward to it so much after hearing 'at the bottom',they sound just as intense as always ;D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,970 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Just got me a ticket to see them over here on March 31st :D

Got Daisy a little while ago. When I first listened to it I fcuking hated it.

I love "Vices", "At The Bottom", "Bought A Bride" and "Gasoline"

It's quite a strange album. Their sound is quite different. If nobody has seen this lot live yet I would strongly recommend it. One of the most passionate performances from a band you're ever likely to see.

Is 'over here' meaning in Ireland? Turns out I can't afford to go to Wembley, but I don't see any other shows on ticketmaster...
