TWO WEXFORD men have been convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of raping a Waterford mother at her home while restraining her with a rope around her neck.

John Connors (25), The Arches, Esmonde Road, Enniscorthy, pleaded not guilty to three charges of raping the victim at her home on August 31st, 2006.

His co-accused, Patrick Moorehouse, also of Esmonde Road, denied a charge of raping the woman on the same occasion.

The jury of seven men and five women took just under four hours on day eight of the trial to unanimously find Connors and Moorehouse guilty of rape.

The jurors acquitted Connors on other charges of rape and anal rape.

Mr Justice George Bermingham registered both Connors and Moorehouse as sex offenders and remanded them in custody to a sentence date next February.

The now 24-year-old woman told prosecuting counsel Thomas Creed SC, during the trial, that the two men forced their way into her home after they called to her door and asked her did she want to buy a camcorder.

Her young child was in the living room when she was pushed into a bedroom and Moorehouse punched her.

She was pushed on to the bed and piece of rope that was on the floor was wrapped around her neck. She said Connors held the rope while Moorehouse raped her and then the men swapped places and Connors raped her.

She said she did not make much noise as she was conscious of her child in the living room, who was unaware of what was happening.

She said the men dressed and left after threatening her not to tell anybody what happened.

During the trial the woman told Mr Creed that she was at home with her toddler in the afternoon when she heard a knock on her front door.

She said there was one large and one smaller man there looking to sell her a camcorder and she told them she was not interested.

The witness said the men left but she heard persistent knocking on the door about 10 or 15 minutes later.

She told her child to stay in the living room and went to answer the door. She said the large man and a different smaller man were at the door and they showed her jewellery and watches.

She said she kept saying she had no money and the large man asked her if she wanted to swap something for the camcorder.

She said she had nothing to swap and he asked if she would swap herself.

The woman said she refused and asked them to go away but the large man pushed her inside and the smaller man closed the front door behind them.

She said she was pushed into a bedroom and when she refused to take her clothes off the large man punched her in the face.

After they left, she gathered her child and went to her boyfriend's house and waited for him to come home from work.

The woman said she did not tell him what happened straight away but later wrote it down and he took her to the Garda station.

    * These guys were local Irish lads, no immigrants or English involved

    * This woman had absolutely no knowledge of these guys, was not connected in any way and have never met them before (hadn't given them any "excuse" to single her out)

    * She was in the safety and security of her own home (not walking down a dark street at night)

*These men were adults and not teenagers as young as 13.

*Her kid was in the next room

And we think our society is better/safer/holier/moralistic...

If we wanted to read depressing news we'd go and look at the news. Why can't AH be a happy place?

    Very loaded statement.

Ah yes but with a name like 'Connors' involved we can still tie them to a minority group.

We'll find some minority to pin it on.

Name like Connors, selling tat door to door. Nope, I'm all out.

    Edit: snap.

What's with all the rape threads?

The media don't report on suicides, why don't they do the same for rape cases and respect people's privacy.

It's a reference to that other thread about the 14-year-old girl who was gang-raped in England. There are a few "England - what do you expect?" comments there.

I tend to avoid these threads the same way I ignore jokes of rape or pedophilia which crop up from time to time.

How about a separate forum for rapes/murders/child beatings? I can't make fun of something like this.

Not another rape thread. I didn't even read the story as it's not something i'd take delight in reading or knowing.

That's the point I think the OP was making. You've got this other thread where people are pontificating about how Ireland has such moral fibre and Britain is gone down the toilet... rather than just considering the fact that some people will be scum.

Not saying there aren't huge social problems in the UK though.

I'm of the opinion people go LOOKING for these stories so that they can post them on AH.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Or possibly, "Let's go and do something nasty, so that when we get 20 years for doing it, we'll have the ultimate accolade, a thread on Boards."

Moorehouse is not a nationally well travelled name afaik but in my neck of the woulds the surname Moorehouse is very well travelled. The local paper has a different Moorehouse everyweek travelling to the local courthouse. So Connors and Moorehouse are both very well travelled lads.

Of course the fact that they are well travelled really has no baring on it. Its not like well travelled people are well known for a propensity to rape strangers, just for raping their wifes/cousins( NB: both noclementures may apply at the same time)

Could just have easily been a pair of roaming Anto's

Apparently, she would not have been allowed to defend herself under Irish Law. If she shot or stabbed the bastards, she would possibly be going to jail now.

No, not fully accurate. Its a rather grey area, but you are entited to defend yourself.

That's why they get away with it.

"They" being anyone who thumbs their nose at civilised society, be they infighting, tax dodging travellers, sponging Nigerians, or our own home grown ne'er do well scobes-the working class who don't, and whose parents didn't.

Our legal system, or our police force have not the collective, figurative, or legislative balls to take them on and beat them.

Easier to maintain an inequitable welfare state that fails to sufficiently reward the needy, while keeping the bottom feeders who will never contribute anything, least of all well rounded offspring to society, fed watered and housed.

As long as we wring our hands and forget five minutes later until the next outrage, nothing will change.

Don't know what's the situation in irish jails and how other inmates treat people for that kind of crime, but you wouldn't want to be locked up in easter european jail for that. There is an eye for an eye rule in there... Especially is you raped a child. Criminals being locked for 10 years and being treated there the same way like they treated their victims. Worst case is in Russia. I have heard that irish jails are heaven compared to russians
