Could you loose muscle mass in just 2 weeks?

    Hi folks,

I'm going out of the country for 2 weeks, which will interfere with my weights routine, as in I just will miss 2 weeks. My instructor in the gym told me I WILL loose muscle mass in this period. Any second opinions? Surely this is not possible?

Also I work out 3 days a week, Is this too little?

You might, but I don't think it would take too long to make up for the two weeks off. Might set you back a few weeks.

Why don't you do some bodyweight exercises whilst your away and keep up your protein intake to minimise muscle loss.

if your lifting fairly high weights then you will lose some mass but it wont set you back alot once your still keeping active and not lazing around doing nothing.

Unless you drop all protein from your diet and continue doing a high amount of activity then I'd say the loss would be minimal, half a pound at most.

    + 1

If you still eat a good amount of protein during your two weeks the loss will be minimal. If anything the most amount of weight you will lose will be water weight (if your going to a hot country that is). If anything, 2 weeks of a relaxed break will do wonders. I came back from a 2 week break from Egypt one year and smashed my squat PR by 22.5kg's. Bit of rest does the body good every now and again.

Thanks ever so much for the help and advice folks :).

I plan on eating a savage amount of calories and plenty of protein shakes in the 2 weeks I'm off. Its amazing how everyone can say different things.

Slightly OT but I I had a bust up with my gym instructor as he has given me a programme where I am ONLY working out 3 days a week:mad: :(. Now to be honest I just DON'T think this is enough in order to build muscle, like 4 - 5 would make sense, but he says I am already working all my muscles in that space  I mean I'm not gonna waste my time if I can't make gains.

Without seeing the programme you have my guess is your instructor is trying avoid overtraining your body as this will result in zero muscle gain. Rest and recovery is just as important as diet and exercise

Less is sometimes more when it comes to training.

Some only workout once a week. You can do bodyweight exercises, isometrics or get those resistance bands if you are really that worried.

If the calories/protein is high enough you'll lose zero.

Well I'm going to ask for a 4 day a week. I'l see how I get on. I think the most important thing is that I lift BIG. At the moment I am only on 8kg dumbells, 15kg bench presss etc. However this to me is not enough and I need to increase my strenght dramatically in order to see results. There are guys skinner than me in the gym and they can left so much heavier. I need to run 4 times a week over a 30 minute period but I think I can manage this WITHOUT losing muscle mass. Just get in all the calories, but I am still trying to decide what days to do my running on, my workout days are Sun, Mon, Wed, Fri.

OP, if ya post up your programme it'd be ideal because I'm confused! When you say you want to work out 4 times a week, is that primarily weights or does it include cardio? 3 times a week for weights is more than enough imo. I do split training for bulking up (i.e. upper body one day, lower the next) so less is indeed sometimes more.

More importantly, what are your goals? If you want to get BIG, and lift BIG you'll have to cut out most if not all cardio.

Thanks eroo. I will post up the programme tomorrow as its in the gym :). Your last sentence worries me alot. I HAVE to do the cardio as I have a serious chronic lung condition and running is vital to keep the lungs healthy. So can you see where I am coming from with regards doing the cardio and weights together?
