Advice - My Daily Run !

    For all you joggers out there...

    I am looking to pick your brains for advice , I am serious about taking up a daily run and would love your input .... I am 6'1 in height and about 14 stone have always played sport but recently (new arrival and work commitments ) have not been as active as I would wish for , I am in good health and eat a drink like anyregular person ( like my currys on Fri and couple of drinks Sat/Sun)
    I was thinking of going for a daily run early in the morning (6am ish) before work and getting kid out the door but I have a couple of questions :

    Is a early morning run (6am) a good choice or maybe the evening -does it matter ?


    What is a healthy distance to aim for when starting - or suit myself ?

    Am i on the right forum or can you re-direct ?

    I know the questions are a little open but any advice is welcome.

    there is a running forum but i doubt it matters

    if you are starting from nothing like i did then all i can advise is dont be discouraged at the start by your lack of ability to go any distance.

    when i started i could only run maybe a k or two and that was with me stopping and walking 3 t 4 months later i was up to 10K and im sure with a structured training plan you could progress faster

    so basically dont get discouraged its well worth it if losing weight is your goal you will notice the fat drop off you too

    Goals ..yes ..that would help if I posted ..:rolleyes:

    Fitness
    Energy Level Increase
    Inner Self satisfaction

    Just seen the marathon forum and reposted , reading on that about guys going from couch potato to marathon in 12months gives my aspirations a big boost , maybe marathon needs to go on the above list .

    the only piece of advice i would have is to spend some money on a nice proper fitting pair of runners. They will make your run more enjoyable and help prevent injuries, well some. I bought my runners in Runways on parnell street, there's a fella in there named john shine who's very helpful!

    Find some circuit/back road that loops onto itself/circle of your town and run it. Then try and shave time off your PB every week. Good for sense of achievement and keeps your body working because it doesnt get used to the same distance in the same time each week.

    Asics Gel Series are your friends also. Good pair of Running shoes is a must.

    If you rely on the teenager in some sports store or Dunnes Stores or other cheap runner, you'll pay the difference in physiotherapy bills as you could injure yourself
    A decent pair of runners may be around the 100 euro mark or more but you'll get great value from them

    Hey mate.

    I understand where your coming from.
    Two months ago I could only run 1k with about 3 stop. Then I would be dead.
    Lastnight I did 12k in 59mins with backpack I am over the moon …
    So if I can do it anyone can. I am 5'10 100kg with very short legs haha

    Some tips I picked up.

    Pay the money for a good pair of runners. Take my word its the best thing you can do
    Get an mp3 player
    Later o get a polar hearth rate monitor great bit of kit.

    Now the runing. Start of slow. As much as you want to go faster don't.
    For the first few weeks run every second day.
    Start of trying to run for 20 mins. don't get dishearthed if you can't run
    For long without stopping
    Run as much as you can then walk fast for a second then run again
    But remember its in your head. Just stay relaxed and keep going
    Its as easy as that don't stop running. Eat right and drink lots of water.

    I took up running in August. Now I can do a 10k run without stopping and without wanting to die. Just keep at it. Get out regularly, even if its more walking than running at first, do a run of some sort a few times a week if you can. Slowly increase the amount of running you do on each outing. Dont be afraid to push yourself. Stretch afterwards. I also recommend a bit of gentle cycling if your calves seize up after running. :) And ditto on the shoes. The right shoes make a heck of a difference.

    Rather than seeing a big ol marathon as your goal, look for a 10k event in a month or two, and aim for that. You will be able for it, just go at your pace, not anyone elses. Youll be surprised and pleased at how your running will improve a short time, once you have an aim. Once youve done that 10k milestone, move on to another challenge.

    But mainly, good job, keep going!!

    Edit: I run best when Im not sleepy tired. Sometimes thats morning, sometimes night. I just get out when I feel the buzz for it. 6am I could not do!

    I started by running at night. When there was no one around to point and laugh at me stopping every 200 yards. Then within a few weeks i was doing a mile non stop then 2 and so on.

    I then started to run at 6am before i had anything to eat to try and burn more fat off but i found the runs harder and i didnt get the best out of them.

    So i know have a SMALL snack about an hour ot two before a run and drink lots of water. Then i can run forever well 12-15k :D


    Start goals they are very important. Set 5k non stop then set 5k in 28 mins after that set 10k non stop and then sub 55mins.

    I am aiming for 16k non stop and under 59 mins.

    The only advice i can offer is set aside time for your runs and build that time into your day. Make your run as important as having your dinner.
    Was training for a marathon 2yrs ago. got to the 20mile mark when i had a injury a month before the dublin marathon. When your distance gets longer you'll find that you'll have to plan your whole day around your run ie eathing the right foods at the right time, watchin the weather for the next few days streatches and so on.
    Plus get a good pair of ascics as they will save your back and a ipod are both essential. Best of luck with it and stick with it and it will come

    I also recommend ascics. I find them to be the best for me. Drop out to the shop in bray they will hock you up
