Have had a strain in my shoulder for about a month now, I think I got it swimming. Can anyone recommend anything besides a physio, that might help, have been using deep heat but doesn't seems to have any effect.

    Cheers

You could try an over the counter rub like Voltarol for a minor strain!
There are a number of rubs out there ask the chemist!

The only time deep heat should be used is on really cold nights when it's really hard to warm up a tight muscle. Otherwise, you should be using freeze gel.

Boxing cream. Savage gear. Like deep heat on amphetamines.

edit: wait wait wait....you've had it a month!!!! Jesus. Try a hot bath, after that, off to the physio.

Oruvail gel ... I and a few other people swear by it, other mates say it's useless, give it a go, used it on a swimming injury and it helps - also doesn't stink !!!!

If its been goin on for a month now id say your gonna have to fork out and get it checked out properly otherwise you run the risk of doing some real damage to yourself. But if you still dont want to by now you shouldnt need to apply any cold to it unless its quiet sore after training, Better off putting a hot water bottle, not deep heat or anything like that, onto it for 10 min on/off

Freeze gel is best applied a.s.a.p after a strain or injury has occured, for the purposes of minimising the inflammatory response. Applying it to a pre-existing injury won't be as beneficial as as heat rub (although having said that, the freeze spray won't make you smell like a rugby club locker room). Personally I prefer tiger balm to deep heat, and the most effective of anti-inflammatory / pain relief rubs has been shown to be ketoprofen (Oruvail) by several studies and a Cochrane review. Voltarol etc are still good, just not AS good.

freeze gel should be applied when ice is not available like after training or when in work etc, cold therpy should be used on an injury for 72 hour, after that heat therapy should be used for 72 hours, if its not healed/healing visit the doc or physio!
