Best Rugby Boots???

I struggle to find good rugby boots. I have a big very wide foot, I tried canterbury boots. they are just akward and stuipid and heavy.
I use to love the old nike boots with the red zig zag on the bottom but they are out of production the last few years i think.
Mizuno, have such poor support, and wear out very quickly. you would be lucky to get more than 3 months out of a pair.

Kooga DP the ones with the gold trim, were very good, but the tongue came off and i couldn't find another pair quickly. I ordered a pair of kooga pro flash online, anyone know if these are any good or have any opinions on rugby boots?

I love the Adidas Predator rugby boots, really light and comfortable, and have a good lifetime, new ones are €200, but you can get last years for alot less, c€80...

Adidas normal rugby boots 8-15 are woeful as the front part of the sole, the plastic part, comes apart easily from the boot, waste of €80 last year.

Obviously I'm prefering the lighter boots at the mo, as im a back, but if your a prop id go with something a bit more rugbyish, like kooga.

The ones im using now are Mizuno, I picked them up for €55 in Elverys, not sure of the name but heres a photo of me in action...

    a57800d8a9.jpg
    The next Brian O'Driscoll...

Their light and have decent studs, good for backs and fowards!

I have a wide foot and wear adidas 915 TRG boots in a wide fit - got them from rugbystore.co.uk

I just buy a normal pair of Nike Boots and stick metal studs on them. does the job fine.

Dont worry bout the width too much when trying on if your a back...just make sure bout half to 1 cm at top...buy them...bring them home...put hot water in the sink...place boots in for min or so til really supple...then put them on your feet and walk about for min or two jumping etc and voila......perfect molded boots for your feet

Normally used to get size 9 world cups, got 8.5 predators for €100 and did the above...best thing ever..like gloves!!

    Your welcome!

when i mean wide, i have a very wide foot, you can see my sock at the side of tongue as there ends up been a big huge gap. if that makes sense. just to let ye know how big I am a 21 stone 6'2" prop. I tried on those 9-15's I couldn't get my foot into them at all. and i don't want big heavy stupid boots, because i am a mobile enough ball carrier aswell. thanks for all your advice though. I have tried most of the popular boots but to no avail. I was just hoping someone knew a good boot.
Anyone ever tried the kooga vanguard?

I must admit i do like the preadators, more of a football but great if your in the backs or a forward wanting to be one!

Mizuno Timaru's are the business - always have been

Nomis boots really good, same position as yourself OP and find they are very comfortable and allow mobility.

Asics boots are also really (or the one pair I've used have been) good but kind look well odd (like a pair of runners with studs)

Got both from lovellrugby.com although i don't think they do nomis anymore

Ah Flynnsie what did you say to the guy on your right? Looks like he **** himself! p.s should have passed to McCullagh

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it is that time of the year, and I am looking at boots again.
Ended up buying Flanker IV wide fit. No where near as comfortable as my old flanker III wide fits. Not as wide either. I just don't feel comfortable in them after a couple of months wearing them.

Have any wide footed players worn any new boots lately... Canterbury Phoenix elite (look good - but are they as useless and heavy and clumsy as older canterbury boots?)
Asics, Puma, Gilbert etc - never wore any of these, any one have any opinions?
I had a pair of Kooga boots that were lovely, but I can't find them on any of the usual sites, I may have to go for another kooga boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I use Mizuno or Kooga - normally get them from eBay for about £40 or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

Yeah I am leaning towards Mizuno at the minute. Most of the Kooga boots seem to be synthethic outer, and these generally fall apart fairly quickly and will never last more than a few months, the amount I wear my boots.

Just curious though about those Canterbury Phoenix Elite. They look good and seem to be a wide fit. One of the descriptions stated that they were broader than insticts.I'd imagine those are another canterbury boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Yeah, the Kooga ones don't seem to last as long, but they're very comfortable and don't need breaking in. I probably only get a season out of a pair, but at 40 a pop, it doesn't bother me.

Whats up with the guy on the left, is he having a fit? :pac:

Let me know how both of ye get on. Curious about the asics ones. If their boots are as good as their runners I'd be well impressed.

I just bought these for pre-season before i knacked my ankle.

I might get these for wetter training and the ones i posted above will be for matches.

I might just have too much time/money too.

I haven't read all the post but my advice would be Puma Kings.

Well if you have narrow feet like me they are the best fit.

Mizuno Timaru's are the business - always have been

    timaru.jpg

Out of all the boots I have used I always keep coming back to these. It really depends on position though.
I wouldn't go anywhere in the forwards unless I had eight studs on my boots. You might as well be wearing slippers if you are rucking in the mud with these on http://www.lovell-rugby.co.uk/Rugby-Boots/Adidas/Predator-Rugby-X-SG-Rugby-Boots-Met-Silver-or-Blue-or-Blk

OP - if you have wide feet, I'd avoid Pumas. They make excellent shoes and boots, but they tend to the skinny side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

I tried on Pumas before. Way too narrow. and its a shame, because everyone I know says they are the most coomfortable boot ever.
I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of those asics warno, they look really comfortable. I might also keep an eye out for a cheap pair of last seasons timarus - out of curiosity. There seems to be very few size 12's for sale in last season model. i am a cheapskate.
I am down training/coaching/playing matchs 5-6 days a week so its always good to have a few pairs of boots, so one pair is always dry.

Had always had Muzino's up until last year, quality boots. But ended up with a pair of Puma V1.08s after Christmas last year (my bro ordered the wrong size online and I ended up with them) - while they weren't as sturdy as a pair of rugby boots, and you feel it if someone stands on them, you definitely do notice the lighter boot.

I got my Asics Warno yesterday. Look lovely, seem to fit and well made. Won't know how good they are just yet, but I am hoping to get the ok from the doc next week! Can't wait.

As regards doing stuff outside the law, they'll be covered in muck and stained a dark colour after the first match in the rain you play so I wouldn't worry about that.

Is there an elastic thingy on the tongue of them or is there velcro to hold it down?

The velcro, i generally tape up my boots anyway. find it adds a bit of support, and never open during the game.

On a side note. I'd recommend getting youself a pair of GoreTex runners for when you're coaching. They are a God send.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

Test drove the Asics Warnos tonight. Nothing to hectic, just a little bit tip, and a bit of running. so far so good. No pains on the balls of my feet even on the firm(ish) ground. comfortable & light. Hoping to go back full training with the seniors tomorrow evening so we'll see what they are like then.

I have a pair of goretex boots for coaching, but the sideline and pitchs do be so bad and mucky that you really need the stubs. Under 16's don't generally get the best pitchs!

    Good thread lads.

I usually pick up the first pair of boots I see in Elverys every August but I think i'll dust of the old credit card and invest in a good pair for the new season

Just had a look at them in elverys. ive got inserts in my shoes so wide boots are a must. Are the flanker boots comfy? what size are you?

49.99£ is decent enough on lovell for them

They are quite heavy though. The newer version is supposed to be lighter.

The Asics Lethal Warno on lovell are very very light for rugby boots. I like mine. Possibly lacking in protection in the forefoot though.

A lot of flankers seem to be wearing Nike CTR Maestri boots these days. I've heard they have a wide fit. Could be worth looking at.

No, In my opinion and a few other guys on the team the Flanker IV boots are awful uncomfortable. I had the extra wide pair, they weren't too wide so that would rule them out. My physio reckons mizuno are the best if you need to put in orthodics.

Been wearing my Asics Warno now for a few months. Without a shadow of a doubt the most comfortable boot ever. 2 of the lads have since bought them and agree that they are the most comfy boot, and very light as well. Pity about them been white though.
