Do you find 'campness' annoying?

I do. I'm not homophobic, as far as I can see it's not limited to gay men anyway. It's not so much the overt feminine behaviour as the obnoxiousness of the sources it seems to come from. Camp people are boisterous and attention seeking from what I've seen and this is what gets to me before them acting like nancy boys.

I don't really understand the mentality either. I knew a guy that as soon as he came out started wearing the most garish clothes and started talking in that creepy 'soft but dirty' way. Makes me very uncomfortable when people put on such a big front.

Whats worse is people who are like that yet are adament their not gay. Its quite funny really. Just waiting for them to realise.

Ather than that i reckon they're a laugh. Your just afraid you might catch the gay off them.

I love it, makes me want to be gay.

They make good comedians tho. eg Graham Norton, Alan Carr etc. Suppose you have to be a bit OTT in that profession.

Maybe he didn't feel comfortable being himself, as it were, until he came out? Maybe it's not a front? It could be that he felt he was putting on a front before he came out, and this is his real self. Who knows.

In any case, campness doesn't annoy me at all. Live and let live, and all that.

Oh very true, I've a good few gay peers but it's the ones who don't act all flambouyantly that tend to actually be mates. Well if that's the real them then I guess I find the real them extremely ittitating.

Maybe if it's forced and theatrical.

If somebody is just a little camp by nature: no.

/estimated time before first occurrence of gay mates disclaimer: two pages.

    Poll options?

I also find camp people annoying, but only because of the attention seeking aspect of it.

Yes, it's incredibly annoying although I haven't come across much of it. On TV though it's quite irritating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Damn right, especially when they camp spawn points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,288 ✭✭✭✭ntlbell

It drives me up the f*cking wall.

I've no problem asking them to tone it down to and have done in the past especially if I'm at the bar having a nice pint of the black stuff and some nancy is bouncing around behind me.

    stfu like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

It's funny. I don't find it irritating in real life but it annoys me in comedians/tv characters.

They're not annoying. They're funny. I love them.
    Straight acting people are boring.

Women don't tend to put on funny voices and pretend to be men.

    not in my experience anyway

Where does the typical gay accent come from? It seems to be universal and i doubt their parents used it.

It only became universal after the invention of movies and TV

I think we can work it out...

l like Alan Carr a lot, especially when he is being interviewed as he naturally funny and has just the right
amount of campness as not to be irritating.
Graham Norton's campness is sometimes ott but it is the type of campness that comes from Julian Clary
    that grates on me.
So , l suppose l only find it annoying when its someone
    like Julian.

Some people are just camp, they can't help it so i don't mind it when its natural.

I know a few friends who are gay and they're not overly camp but still camp enough to know they're gay if that makes sense. Still this doesn't annoy me...

However I did work with a ginger bloke who was as gay as Christmas, he was rude and put his sexual prefference out there for everyone to know and see. He would make lude jokes about how he likes his sex etc, he was annoyingly camp and he put it on just to let people know he's gay.

Kinda like Born again christians annoying you at the door... yes you're christian just don't go ramming your beliefs down peoples throats.

    just my 2cents

    You're sexual preference shouldn't define you're personality.

it's put on, it's attention seeking, it's annoying.

no one is _born_ with that voice, no one.

I've met lesbians who are a bit "manly"

but they don't sqeek in my ear when I'm drinking and don't annoy the f*ck out of me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,588 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

    Bugs me.

I dont understand it either, its like most men who come out seem to immediately inherit the same personality. Why?! Just cause a lad realises he finds women hot, or a woman finds men hot, their whole personality doesn't suddenly morph to a ridiculous stereotype. I know 2 gay chaps, who are completely like any other guys i know, except that they happen to fancy men, and they dont really understand the whole thing either...

why does what people happen to find attractive have to dominate every other characteristic of their persona?

    Campness bugs me.

Maybe they are. Maybe they're just simple. It's not that they act like women, it's that they act like the most annoying women.

No, but they do wear men's clothes and have deep voices and adopt male affectations... which is what you were saying they didn't do? Right?

I agree that campness can be annoying, I was just giving you an example of where women "put on funny voices and pretend to be men".

I have NOT met a straight guy that talks like a f*cking squeeky annoying gremlin.

deep voiced tomboys i can handle squeeky little nanices i cannot.

I'm not anti gay at all; but I do think a lot of Gay men play on their 'gayness' a little too much.
Everything is so OTT and in your face. Relax, you're gay, I'm straight, chill and relax!

I guess it's the feminine side; though most gay men are a lot more feminine that most bloody women, see, it' OTT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,888 ✭✭✭Rsaeire

If they're the loud, annoying, "look at me, i'm queer" type then yes, it annoys the hell out of me and irritates me no end because it just seems put on and fake.

Well if they're screaming and shouting in my ear I must be doing something good ;)

But I mean the annoying "OMG lets have a DMC *scream*" ones...
