Posted this a while ago and still have not got it going. Followed the video on youtube of how to change to Nat type 1 and it just wont work. Ive asked eircom what my username and password is and they told me its eircom@eircom.net and that the password is broadband1. Been trying that and its not working, also tried eircom and broadband1 as the username. Ive tried it loads of times so its not that im typing it in wrong and ive set my router security to low and it still wont work. Heres what im doing

    Wiresless Connection
    Scan
    Enter WPA key
    MTU - 1500
Proxy Server - Do Not Use
Cant remeber last one but I know im doing it right

After this when I try to test the connection after about a minute it comes up failed to obtian IP. I can connect to the net through the easy setup mode but that gets me on net type 3 which is grand for Call Of Duty but I want to play Fifa and I cant connect. Can anyone please help me, i have changed a friend of mine's playstation to nat type 1 following that video so I dont see how it is not working for me

easiest thing to do is set it up manually and forward the ports for games and psn, bit of a pain to do but its ur only other option

    hi m.j.w,
I know its very annoying! I was all day at it when i got fifa09...
Im also with eircom & have a netopia router!

I tryed & tryed the youtube video & it also wouldnt work. I also got a link from boards,portforward.com i think it was! i put in all the ports in the homepage of the router and still nothing....

I went back and tryed the youtube vid again & it worked on the 3rd attempt...

Keep trying....fifa09 is well worth the hassle;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

how do you do it? Do you have to know much about networking because I havent got a clue!!

Set your ps3 to a static address. Then go to your router homepage look under security for dmz or dmz host enable it for your static ps3 address that should open all ports for you. Thats what I did anyway.

have a look at this...hope it helps!

    NAT Issues

If you go into the PS3 Network Settings and perform a connection test, it will tell you what NAT level you are currently on. The three levels are NAT1, NAT2 & NAT3:
    • NAT1 - Direct connection to the internet - no NAT required
    • NAT2 - Connected via router, but all necessary ports NAT-ed (aka port forwarded)
    • NAT3 - connected via router, some ports not NAT-ed yet.
When you first connect your PS3 to the internet through a normal DSL router, you will usually be on NAT3 - you probably want to get this up to NAT2 or NAT1 to ensure you can sucessfully do all the online gaming stuff you want to do (chat, host games, join games...)

There are two main ways of doing this - you only need to do one or the other.

    Method 1 - Port-Forwarding to get NAT2

In this method, you are trying to open certain ports in your router to allow other users to connect to them - this is necessary for the complete operation of PSN functionality. The idea is that you set up rules on your router to forward traffic on certain ports to your PS3, which lives on your internal network. When all the ports are done, you will be at NAT2.

To get specific instructions for your router, go to portforward.com - pick your router (look on the router for a sticker with a model number if you don't know it), and then select "Playstation Network" as the application to configure. Follow these instructions carefully.

You may also need to open these ports on your routers firewall - refer to to user manual of your router for further info, or ask on the Comms forum. Also, some games use special ports - you can get instructions for them on portforward.com as well.

Method 2 - Using PPPoE to get NAT1

PPPoE is the protocol your router uses to connect to your ISP, but your PS3 is able to do it as well - it's explained clearly on this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JugGe7CCuNU

As Mick mentioned, you'll need your internet login details - if you don't have them, ring your ISP and ask fior them (or google it). Also, bear in mind this will only work for ISPs that use PPPoE (regular DSL providers) - I'm not sure if it will work for cable modems, radio internet, satellite internet etc... (people like Irish Broadband, UPC) - maybe someone else can confirm/deny this.

The net effect of following the video is that your PS3 gets a public IP address on the internet (like your router has) and is outside your firewall (so all the necessary ports are open by default) - do the connection test, and you'll be at NAT1

So which one do I do??

It doesn't matter, both will work, and conversly, people have had trouble getting either method to work. In general, method 2 is simpler and involves no router knowledge, so a lot of people go for it. On the other hand, method 1 exposes less of your PS3 to the internet (just the ports you open), so its argueably a better option from a security point of view. Also, if you use media servers to stream to the PS3, method 2 will also probably stop this working - it can be made work, but thats another story....

If you are still in doubt, or you have a funny network setup, try asking on the Net & Comms forum for advice. Alternativly, search this forum for old threads on NAT issues - there are loads of them, so its possible someone had the exact same problem as you and found a solution already...

here is my guide i wrote on my clan site
to get nat 1 to stay you may need to ditch your netopia, but just to forward ports heres how, with latest netopia firmware your router can do it automatically !

i tjust tryed the port forwarding way my self there snd the first thing i had to do was set up a static ip. so i went to run and tyed in cmd and then into the command box typed ipconfig/all. They say then I should be shown info such as IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and Name Servers but im getting none of these. Waht is coming up for me is:

Tunnel Adapter Local Area Connection 13 :
    Media State : Media Disconnected
    Connection Specific DNS Suffix :
Discription : isatap (load of numbers)
    Physical Address : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
    DHCP Enabled : No
    Auto Configuration Enabled : Yes

Tunnel Adapter Local Area Connection 14 :
THEN THE SAME INFO AS ABOVE AND SO ON

Does this mean there is a probelm with my connection

why don't you automatically port forward as said above ?
you can static nat as well, once ur ps is turned on through the router page

I can play COD online but I am unable to play Fifa so do I not need to manually forward the ports in the "Define Custom Service" part and if so d Inot need to set up a static Ip to do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,784 ✭✭✭Damien360

    Connect by NAT 1.

Connect by PPOE on the PS3. Add SSID and WEP/WPA key. Both are case sensitive. Enter username and password for eircom. eircom@eircom.net and broadband1 respectively. MTU 1500, do not use proxy. Turn off media sharing if it is on.

That way PS3 is not on the network and is connected directly to net thereby giving NAT1.

Go out to last page on wireless settings of your router to see if the MAC address filtering is active. You will need to add the PS3 mac adddess here if it is in use. MAC address is visible on PS3 when you test your connection.

It will fail to connect 3 times. Mine does every time I try but on last go it will connect.

If you have an older netopia router you cannot port forward for PS3 and get NAT2. It does not work. Believe me, I tried.

The IP that will be assigned to your PS3 will be a public IP. It will not have the 192.168 etc. range.

I have followed what you are saying and I enable Mac Address filtering andit says:

    "Authorized Wireless MAC Addresses
When MAC Authorization is enabled, all wireless clients are blocked until their MAC addresses are added to the Authorized list
No wireless MAC entries have been defined

To add a new Wireless MAC Address, press the "Add" button."

Where do I get the PS3 Mac address? It is not visible when I test the connection

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

Okay I done what you said and got the Mac address of the PS3 and enabled it on the router homepage and then connected and it worked and I got Nat Type 1. So I took out COD and put Fifa in and tried to play online and it did not connect so I went back to Network settings and its failing to get an Ip again. I tried to go on laptop and I could not cnnect to internet because the laptop mac address was not entered in so it was blocking it so I reset my router and enabled Mac address filtering again and put in the address of both laptop and Ps3. The laptop is working grand now and the PS3 is back to not obtaining an Ip. I thought I had it there for a while:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭m.j.w

Okay ive tried it about 10 times now since enabling the mac filter and it is still obtaining to get the IP address. How to f**k can it just work a few minutes ago and then go back to not working. The laptop is connecting grand after I typed in its Mac address so why not the PS3. Thanks to everyone for all the help so far!! This is seriously doing my head in:mad:

    You are nearly there. Calm.....

Once it connects and you get an IP address, you still have to "sign in" to the PSN network before going to the game.

    Calm..........

Yea nearly there lol, Bobby see if I do that wha your on about there do I not still need to get Nat Type 1? And what do I goto on the router home page to get to that page that you are on there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭Stuxnet

no, im eircom, and use the wireless netopia, on nat 3, i have no problems with any games
i did manage to get nat 1 once using mickdeja's youtube vid, but it went back to nat 3 itself, and since using his trick, it never works anymore, i cant get it, its defo the netopia's fault,
my point is tho, you dont have to be nat 1, yes it would be nice, but its not the end of the world, if you sort the ports right,
pain in the arse i know tho

Bobby just wandering how you enter them figures to forward the ports? Like TCP 80, 443, 9980-9989 etc. I see you have the 9990-9989 one done in your screenshot but how do I enter the 80 and the 443 one and where do I put the figures?

    Error

Global port range overlaps with HTTPS

anyone know what I can do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

reset the router, theres a little hole on the back deside the power lead
follow this for nat1 or this for nat2
these are the ports that psn uses, tell me what games ya have and i'll get the ports if ya go nat2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭cavanmaniac

I too am going absolutely bonkers with all this NAT type, DMZ, port forwarding and other such nonsense. How difficult do they have to make it so you can do something as straighforward as putting a bloody disc in your PS3 and going online with it????? Jesus it's enough to make me murder someone.

Back in the day on my Ps2 I had trouble getting online with Pro Evo 5/6 but forwarded the ports in question and it worked eventually after some messing about. No probs with Pro evo 2008 on Ps3 but with Pro evo 2009, I either get a cannot transmit error message, port 5730, or port 3658.

I've tried until I'm blue in the face to get it working but to no avail, I'm flabbergasted there seems to be so many obstacles and such a depth of knowledge required just to get online. I'm with BT and using a ZyXel 660 RU-T1, wired connection/cable.

I've tried forwarding both ports and any others mentioned in various forums for Ps3 gaming, but no joy.

I've tried putting my Ps3 in a DMZ but there is no option for DMZ etc. on my router interface, is it there under another name/terminology?

I've followed the instructions for enabling UPnP but it won't take, ps3 keeps saying it's unavailable.

I've followed instructions for changing my NAT type but that won't work either, I'm stuck on Nat 3 no matter what I do.

About the only other thing I haven't tried is the PPPoE method, because I don't have BT Ireland's username and password that it says on the sticky is required.

I'd have thought that simply opening up the ports quoted would work, but even though I open the port with the specific number quoted in the error messages, it just ignores it and continues giving me the message. Messing around with the network settings in the actual game itself makes no difference either.

Can anyone help before an otherwise inoffensive PS3 finds itself flying through my window and hurtling to a sudden stop on the tarmac below?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

lol, using one of those shoddy netopia routers, with a ps3 is a nightmere.

Those routers are bad enough, without the terrible network functionality of the console itself. Little off topic, but tried playing resistance 2 last night, took 50mins to get the ps3 ready to play it, and when we finally started a game, it fired us out back to the main menu.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭cavanmaniac

Would changing my modem make any difference? Does anyone have logins and password for the BT service so I can try this PPPoE thingummy?

I have officially lost the will to live. This is a huge black mark against the PS3 and I'll advise anybody accordingly if they ask me. What a colossal amount of messing about.

Right ive had an absolute **** load of problems wit dis as well. But i managed to fix it only two days ago nd got Nat 2.
    1. The reason it is failing to obtain ip address is because ur pppoe username and password are incorrect. So for that setting just select the top option 'Automatic'.

    2. If u are using a Netopia caymen router like I was den u CANT get Nat 2. The router is to old. I changed my router and enabled UPnP and i got Nat 2. If u are not using the netopia router and are using a newer router have a look around for UPnP and enable it. U can do this by going to start - Run - cmd - 'ipconfig' - Den type the Default Gatway numbers into ur address bar. This brings u to ur Routers Homepage where u can change settings. Den go to ur ps3 and dont bother with pppoe or mtu. They dont matter just put them both to automatic. On the last option Enable UPnp. Run a connection test and if UPnP comes up as Available u will gt Nat 2. If it comes up as Unavailableden it means ur router does not support UPnp (Universal Plug 'n' Play).
    Any Questions??

    Try admin as username
    and
    password as password.
This worked for mine when I was on eircom wireless. Have since changed to UPC so no more complaints from me.

    Also,

Since 12:10am today, I could not login using the broadband1 / broadband1 combination in the user / password fields.

Instead, I changed the username to eircom@eircom.net and the password to broadband1.

This fixed the problem for me.

    Obtaining IP Address: Failed!

Ive tried re-inputting the wep key, reinputting the settings, restarting the router...aaagh. Any ideas?
