Well I bit the bullet and decided to go to Newry for tyres. I went to one of the big tyre multiples as they quoted me the equivalent of €524 for 4 Pirelli 235/45/17 97w tyres. The best quote I got was €600 in the Republic with other quotes ranging from €660 to a staggering €700.

The service was excellent and as a gesture they threw in a 1 litre bottle of screenwash concentrate and a tube of Armor-All dashboard wipes because I drove up. What a pleasure.

If your not actually going to the north anyway, the tyres can be had on Eiretyres for €510-€520 for the set (plus €40 for fitting). Allowing for currency fluctuations it could be cheap sometimes.

still sounds expensive..did you do a price comparison with eiretyres & camskill ?

Aren't Pirelli supposed to have notoriously weak walls, and therefore are pretty crap in low profile form

I don't know. I've always used them and never had a problem.

I just don't understand this tbh.

You spent half a day (or more) driving to Newry, to save €76 euro, assuming it takes you 5 hours there and back and waiting for the tyres to be fitted. Thats 5 hours of your time and about €20 in fuel to save €56 ???

I'm not having a pop here but your time is worth more than €14 a hour surely?

If you go by Eiretyres prices and allow for fitting, the initial saving is only the €40 fitting fee, then take off for the time and petrol.

OP what was the Stg price? Was it around 445 (thats the XE price, which you wont get, some im guessing less?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭Paddy001

Ha i know a place down south was selling goodyear in that size for 100 each fitted! Bit of a waste though for a small saving

It fitted in nicely with spending the day shopping. It took 2 hours to drive up and 2 hours 20 to drive back. The cheapest quote I got in the Republic would have included a 50 km roundtrip. I have no experience of using eiretyres and when I looked on their site for a tyre dealer to fit them they were sending me to Gorey Which would be an even longer round trip. In fairness their on line price they quoted me matched Newry exactly.

I agree its probably not worth going specifically for tyres but when tied in with a full shopping day it was great.

The price quoted was £436. I'm building in the conversion so it may be a euro or two cheaper but maybe not.

Was up the north the weekend visiting the outlaws.

Got 2 new tyres fitted by PF Tyres outside Downpatrick on a recommendation from the missus Dad.

They are Vredestein 195 65 R15's, £54 for each tyre fitted, balanced etc.

Thought they were good value. Suited me as I was up there anyway.

Paid around €100 per tyre in the south for 2 Bridgestones earlier this year.

So a bit of a no brainer for me as I was up there anyway.

Yea but no comparision in quality between Vredestine and Bridgestone, come on folks lets compare like with like here.
You get what you pay for..:)

Goodyear Eagle's in those sizes are £380 approx from Camskill, next day delivery to Dublin..

I ordered 4 from Camskill, fitting and Balancing was about €55.. No tyre fitting place will turn you away these days.

Ok, I'm no expert on tyres like you guys.

    BUT....

The Vredestein HI Trac tyres were voted the safest tyre above all of the bling bling big name tyres in one review I looked at due to added silicone, again I'm no expert.

They were the best tyre for stopping in the wet so I would say that is a plus in our rain soaked country.

I can link some reviews of these tyres if you don't believe me.

Paying a premium for a big name manufacturer is not always the most prudent choice. So do a bit of research before you think your comparing like with like.

what a stupid post from someone calling himself the tyreman

it all depends on the model tyre doesnt it

for example the vredestein ultrac sessanta stand up to michelin ps2s as one of the best tyres you can buy

OK, Stick to reading the reviews, and ill stick to selling and fitting tyres, like i have done for the last 22yrs,and in another 22yrs time ill still know more about it than you.

Tyres aside, you mean to say,if your theory was to follow through, that the less you pay for something whatever you are buying, will be better than the dearer branded name?????????????.

Just FYI-these are the Chinese variant (or at least that's what I got)-legal to sell in the UK, but may be of lesser quality than Euro manufactured Goodyears. There are also rumour of Thai manufactured Goodyears being sold in the UK which are not legal/suitable for Ireland/UK.

There was a thread on the topic a while ago here on Boards. I'm happy enough with what I got...

Well thetyreman, you obviously have a hard on for Bridgestone tyres and they are probably your biggest seller.

Have a look at the link below, when you think about it Boards.ie is a review site where everyone has an opinion and it's up to the readers to form an opinion based on that.

    http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-tests-news/vredestein-test-successes.htm

I am surprised you are still in business if you think paying big money for a big brand name still works. You only have to look at Audi/VW/Skoda and the parts they share and the different prices they charge if you want proof.

I will be happy in a Skoda with Vredestein tyers and a fat wallet as opposed to an Audi with Bridgestones and a big overdraft.

Anyhoo, feel free to reply, I have said enough and don't want to take away from the OP's post.

ill stick to trying tyres out and not listen to people with vested interests.

i have had michelin ps2s and vredestein ultrac sessanta on a bmw e46 m3, there was nothing in it, except price, the sessantas are not cheap but they cost a lot less than the michelins.

oh and guess what, EVO magazine tested all the top brands the sessantas came first or second in that test ;)

you're mixing up price, quality and value. If you can't tell the difference, you're not in a position to espousing anything.

Fwiw, a cheap (price) tyre is not necessarily a cheap (quality) tyre. Or anything else, for that matter.

Let's not forget that there was a time when no-one wanted Bridgestones, either. If people stayed the same, you wouldn't be selling them now.

Ditto for any other brand on the market. Fulda. Who ? Good enough for Porsche, good enough for me. Colway Remoulds. Who ? Good enough to Rally on, good enough for me.

You make a decision about the level you want to buy at - whether dictated by price, quality, reputation, and go shopping from there. This 'automatic' dearer must be better you're touting, is rubbish. Just ask Skoda. And VW who own them (who ain't laughin' anymore...now that Skoda quality has overtaken VW quality.....)

Me ? I have Avon's on one of my car's.

I also want a set of Toyo Proxes for my MX-5, but, tyre people, stop trying to flog me H and V rated tyres - an MX-5 will only go quick enough to need them.........by falling off a cliff. R, S or T rating will do nicely. But can I get them ??

My 0.02?....Sell people what they want, not what you want to sell them.

just thought I would let you all know.

There is a tire fitter in Lifford , beside Strabane.

He sells part worn German tires. As far as I know. the Germans have to replace their tires each winter season with winter tires and again in summer.

I have been using them on my van and my wife's car for 3 years now.

All top brands with very little ware. 25 euro per tire. fitted.

I got nearly new GoodYear Cargo commercial tires all round for 100 euro. Just 2 weeks ago.

You can pick from 1000s of tires

I'm just looking at 4 Goodyear Eagles for 220 Euro on EireTyres here, 326 for the same from FastFit.ie!

I need two fronts on my car (Fiesta 02) but at that rate I reckon I might aswell get 4 as I don't know a huge amount about tyres and not sure if I should mix and match Goodyear on the front with Bridgestone on the back. (Opinions on this would be good too!).

Anyway, my question is, will any fitters in Dublin fit the tyres for me, check the balancing/tracking etc. or are places like Fast Fit only happy to fit if you buy the tyre from them?

only certain places will fit, look at the fitters list on eire tyres, most places will charge 15 a corner

sandyford tyres deffo do it, and are also prepared to price match to a point

are eagle f1s not overkill on a fiesta tho

I thought this was a great service which I used when living in the UK. http://www.event-tyres.co.uk. They dont have any tire centers its all mobile so they can give great deals. I got 4 Falken FK452's 225/45/R17 fitted and balanced for 316 stg(408 euro of eiretyres and the price of fitting and balancing would have to be added on also). I ordered on wednesday and they arrived outside my door at 8am sat morning(as I requested) and had every thing done in no time. Very handy as they would call to your work place, track day etc if you wanted. A service like this would be very handy over here especially as normal tire centers charge a big call out charge on top of their overpriced tyres.

it would seem to me that they are (that said you can never have too good a tyre and at the size you are looking for they arent too expensive id imagine) as they are normally fitted to performance cars.

not sure what tyres people use on fiestas and the like? anyone elsw?

Just to follow up, I rang Fast Fit in Santry and told him my EireTyres quote. He offered me Goodyear Durogrips in my size for 75 euro each fitted, balanced etc. Those tyres are 72 quid on EireTyres, so I am going to head up to FastFit on Saturday and get the tyres from them.

I had Avons on one of my cars and they were sh!t. I don't like Michelins cause by and large they're hard as rock compound, cost a fortune and last long after the grip does. On one of my cars I had 15" wheels with 195 50's on it, and I could get Pirelli P5000's for €50 each, fitted and all. Half the price of Michilins. They might only last half as long, but two sets later and same money spend but lots of grip all the way through.
It's true what people here say, not everything expensive is good and not everything cheap is crap, but I don't take chances on tyres. They only have to save you once for all your money to be worth while.
Those Chinese and other rated tyres are shyte compared to the stuff over here. The quality of the rubber is much poorer. Mate had a set on his car, notably poorer quality. If you skimp on everything else in life, let tyres not be one of those things. How much is €200 in your pocket worth if you kill a child from stopping 5 meters too far?

I think you mis-understood me - he'll fit the tyres you buy on the internet, whether eiretyres, camskill etc - so he cannot possibly influence your tyre brand choice, or price ! Eur 15/per wheel, iirc, at your door.

Cannot possibly see how it'll get any easier than that, tbh.

..seem ok my car. I drive a bike too, and Avon make very, very good bike tyres.
I don't like Michelins cause by and large they're hard as rock compound, cost a fortune and last long after the grip does.
    True !!:D
It's true what people here say, not everything expensive is good and not everything cheap is crap, but I don't take chances on tyres. They only have to save you once for all your money to be worth while.
Those Chinese and other rated tyres are shyte compared to the stuff over here. The quality of the rubber is much poorer. Mate had a set on his car, notably poorer quality. If you skimp on everything else in life, let tyres not be one of those things. How much is €200 in your pocket worth if you kill a child from stopping 5 meters too far?
Entirely true. Problem is though, especially with internet sales, how do you know what you're getting ?

btw, haven't heard Firestones mentioned yet.

Sorry, I took you up wrong. I thought he fitted the tyres he supplies didnt know he would come out to fit tyres bought of the net. Good to know that actually. Thanks.

    ps2?

honestly try either goodyear eagle f1 or preferably try the vredestein ultrac sessanta :)

    What's PS2?

I'd rather stick with the factory tyres, i'm looking at about €1200 fitted (from eiretyres). Altough I have 2 Pirelli P-Zeros at the back at the moment and love the grip and the look of them, so I might get 4 of them, they're about €1000 fitted.

I've another 2-3 months left on them so I better get saving now! :)

While I am aware of variants made in China, the ones i got from Camskill were made in Germany.

Is it marked on the tyre, where it's made ?

I've never bought a tyre in the south and I've been living down south since 1998. I'm originally from the Tyrone so I'm up there once a month anyway so it makes sense for me to buy up there.

I put 4 Michelin Pilot Primacy's, 215/45/R17's on last time and there was a saving of 50 euro a tyre compared to eiretyres (at the time) and that was fitted and balanced. Its in a place in Cookstown that I've used for years at this point.
