Spring Marathons 2009

Looks like a few of us are planning on doing Rotterdam [edit: and other Spring races] so I thought I'd pop up a thread for them. I officially entered last week - including charity donation and chip hire it was under €45 which is incredible value for probably the best organised marathon in Europe. You get FREE photos (DCM please take note), free video clips of you going through every 5km marker, an excellent addidas technical tee and the innovative marathon race tracker which is hard to explain but loads of fun! Well supported race - it's one of my favourites (can you tell!)

Start is segmented into pens A - G with proof required for pens A - D. yet another reason for my liking this race is that I gave my two most recent results and my target and they placed me in pen C, so the pressure is really on now! I've plotted out my training plan which will start in earnest in the next couple of weeks so I'm going to be taking it pretty easy until then. It's another P&D one but I'm going to try and follow it properly this time...

So, who else is in - roll up, roll up!

[edit] Originally this was going to be about Rotterdam, opened up at Woodles suggestion...

Hope you don't mind me dragging your thread slightly off-topic.

I'm just wondering why you choose to wait a few weeks before starting your training - why not get an extra few weeks in? This year I tried a 46 week training program. I got a serious injury after about 25 weeks. I don't really think it was because my training program was so long but it has made me think that perhaps there is a risk that comes with long training programs.

46 weeks sounds a bit mad!! Would you not be better just to take each race as it comes? Have your goal race down the line, but focus on the next race in 4 weeks, then the race after, up until your goal race. My marathon specific training won't start until 10-12 weeks before the marathon, but it's not as if I'm going to sit around doing nothing until 12 weeks to go. I'll be entering other races and concentrating on them.

    No worries!

After Dublin I had a few little niggly aches and pains and when I went back running they were still there so i have basically done nothing since then (and a busy couple of months at work haven't helped). The plan I am aiming at is pretty intense, if I follow it fully I will be doing doubles and peaking at ~70 miles per week. The full 18 week plan would start this week but I am easing into it and planning on building mileage for a couple of weeks before hitting the plan full on - I think starting properly this week would leave me at risk of an over-use injury. And I tend to get heartily sick of training after a couple of months - with a 16 week program that boredom sets in close enough to race day that I can get through it! A 46 week program is huge, no way I'd be able for that and I agree that there is a risk with overly long programmes, both mental and physical.

All that said I think that mine is an ambitious schedule but it needs to be if I am to have any chance of making my time target. As I hinted in another thread I am not a particularly talented runner so any progress I make has to be through hard work!

Hi Amadeus, great idea for a thread, you can count me in, my training started this week for Paris, is it an idea to rename your thread :) to include other spring marathon hopefuls instead of starting other threads example Paris, London, have it as an all in one.

Well I'm not sure it was the right decision, but I think it's reasonably common among full time athletes. The idea is that you get decent chunks of time to work on different areas so instead of normally doing 4 weeks base training I was doing 3 months. Similarly, I spent a few months on long intervals before shortening them, rather than just a few weeks.

I was still able to race fairly well during these phases - I equalled my 3k pb on a miserable windy night without having done any short intervals in over 6 months and having done a 70 minute run the night before.

I don't think my long training program was the cause of my injury but it means I'm now hoping to come back off 3 months injured and hope that I haven't lost all the momentum of the previous six months.

I'm doing Barcelona on 1st of March so this week is the getting back old pattern:
    1 x long run (9m this week)
    2 x 10k - 1 x marathon pace, 1 x marathon pace - 1 min per mile
    1 x 5k faster pace than norm.

Will need to introduce another session in the week soon too, most likely for intervals over a weekend when there is enough light for sprinting around a pitch.

Have the Aware 10k on Sat and the Raheny 5 in Jan but there doesn't seem to be a lot else on the east coast this side of March/April ????

Also doing the P&D. I'm going to start off at the 55 mile and try and work up to the 70 mile schedule. I couldn't find a suitable 1/2 marathon for my preperation so I have chosen Ballycotton 10 and I sent off my application this morning. This evening I'll be doing 7 miles with 7x100m strides and I'm going to do the strides at the end of the session as I think I had been doing them wrong as I was doing them at every mile mark but after reading the book again it seems to imply at the end of your session.

There should be a good few road races between 5k and 10k anyway. Might take a bit of searching to find them, maybe check out BHAA, Clonliffe Harriers, Athenry AC websites to start with.

I think seeing 46 weeks laid out would be the daunting aspect for me. Your program was probably fairly similar to mine, all winter into spring doing long intervals, short stuff in the summer on the track, and recently I'd been doing a lot of tempo work. I had a target set for 10k at the end of the summer and raced plenty up to that point. I would taper for every race though - they mightn't have been the goal race but the build up to it was the same. No point leaving all the hard work on the track and not bringing it to the race. Pity you got the injury, as by the sounds of it you were flying...

I'm in for one - just not sure where yet... choices, choices...

Don't worry, there'll be plenty - most websites just don't seem to be up to date with anything in the new year.

If you find a cheap flight to the UK there'll be loads around that time of year. The runnersworld site has a great events calendar. Ballycotton will be a fine warm up if you don't get one.

Im in the process of registrering for Barcelona and am a little confused. Under the "COMPETITION DATA" heading it has "Chip" with a Yes or No answer. When i click yes it brings up two areas to fill some details? Anyone like to explain what that is? Do people carry their own chips and hence it is looking for my personal one or something?

    Thanks.

It's asking you 'Is your name Chip?'. If it is they will send you out a free Stars and Stripes singlet to wear during the race and if you beat all the other 'Chip's in the race you win a pick-up truck.

But if you are not American, they are, if I remember right, actually asking if you own a chip or not. When you hit yes, they want the details of your chip. So it's a no for that one. (I think!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

Yeah, rang them about it myself.
They said choose no if you do not have a chip.

I got out for a very enjoyable 7 miles yesterday withstrides. I'm racing a 5K on Sunday. Which means I won't get my long run in of 12 miles and I don't want to do it on Saturday as I want to be somewhat fresh going into the race. So I was thinking of upping my 9 mile run tomorrow up to 12 and go out on Friday for 5 easy miles which is suppose to be a rest day. Just that it's week 1 and I want to try and follow it as best I can, good plan or any suggestions.

Just a heads up that the price for Rotterdam (currently €36) goes up in a weeks time, so anyone who wants to sign up, go for it now.

I've got entry, flights from Dublin, two nights in a 4* hotel, all for €250! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Great value which puts the cost of the likes of the Wexford half into perspective. Saw the guy with the sign in the park for that on Saturday and I had to stop myself yelling at him 'too expensive'. Mind you at that moment I was probably incapable of speech.

Can I ask the details on that one ? Have to book all this myself and I'm saving my energy for the Jingle bells 5k (I'm lazy).

Beat me to it - I was going to ask which hotel as well!!

Enjoy the Jingle Bells, you owe me a tall glass of Dutch beer:)

How long till you got confirmation of your pen. When I entered online I applied for pen C but did not see any option of entering my previous race times!! Afraid I might get pushed down to the lower pens

Gentlemen, I propose we all hold hands during the race.;)

Or perhaps a small wager? €10 a man, to go to the charity of whoever is fastest's choosing?

OK, I'm not going to get into a bidding war on our Rotterdam time (because it's going to be a big enough ask without cutting minutes off on an inter-group bet) but I'm happy to throw a tenner to whomever is first over the line. If we all make it sub 3 though the biggest post race pain might be from all the backslapping :D
