I found this pack of Tayto a few weeks ago in a room at work. I was just wondering when they cost 3p. Mid 1970s?

I can remember them when they were 2d in the late 60ies. We Joined the EEC in 1973 and the price soared to 3P.

Lets get Tayto cheaper again. lol :D

LOL :D - I found it in a plant room along with a large glass bottle of Coca Cola and a bread wrapper from Johnson, Mooney and O'Brien.

Somebody must have sat down and had their lunch in the early 1970s and their rubbish hasn't been touched since!

Worse still if we voted YES they could ban them over some unlawful ingredient.

A posh lunch-eater too, I thought everybody ate packed porridge or something for lunch in the days before the Celtic Tiger.

    Sooo true.
I read somewhere they tried to ban some banannas because they weren't of the right full curvature. They were too straight!

    Hehehe . I'm with you there :p

Tayto was the first ever flavoured crisp in the world. Joe "Spud" Murphy I think made himself a little fortune selling the rights worldwide and I can only assume that it why you can't get tayto outside of Ireland now. In the UK you can get a crisp that's called Tayto but it's made in Northern Ire and tastes just like ghey Walkers.

I adore Tayto and it pisses me off that I canny get any in Glasgow when I'm over there.

Edit: I remember as a kid in school we had a little rivalry between the Tayto kids and the King kids. Then my da burst me bubble and said that they're owned by the same crowd! I don't think anyone does crisps like the Irish do crisps. Even Perry (which I think are Irish , but at 2am tihs saturday night I could be wrong) are(were?) lovely compared to well , every other crisp.

The A-Team 5p crisps in the early 90's were the best:)

Pre- 1971 they'd have been priced in d, not p. They'd have cost about 1d then or thereabouts. I'd say 3p for Tayto would be about 1972-1973. That bag would have to be from after 1971 and before 1975, when they went up to a massive 5p.

I remember reading that the EU curvature thing was to support african and caribean banana plantations which produced more curvy bananas as opposed to latin american non curvy bananas which would be mainly produced by american companies who hold influence in the area.

    As do I.
They were made in your neck of the woods, right?

So do I. 99p to be exact. Got a penny jelly out of the change.

Anyway, it would definitely have to be post decimalisation as others have pointed out.
Is there a best before date on the pack or on the bread?

    Em, what's a 'd' ? and how much is/was it worth

    1 penny

Pre-1971 we had coins like the Penny , Threepence , Sixpence, Florin, Crown, etc...

We referred to “pounds, shillings, and pence” or "l.s.d" :)

The 'd' meant 'pence' ( the 'd' coming from the latin coin 'denarius')

'd' was an old pre-decimal penny. (LSD - librae, solidi and denari - Latin for pounds, shillings and pence)

12 old pennies in a shilling.

2 and a half shillings in a half crown.

    5 shillings in a crown.

    240 pennies in a pound.

When the 'new pence' came in in 1971, there was 100 pennies in a pound.

2.4 pennies in a new penny.

    A shilling became 5p.

    2 shillings became 10p.

The 10 shilling note became 50p.

In pre decimalisation days a bill might be written as £1 3s 10d which was 1 pound, 3 shillings and 10 pennies - £1.19 in new money.

When a pack of 20 approached £1 everyone was going to give them up as it was a huge psychological barrier - a pound for a pack of fags.

I used to be sent to the shop by my mother with 12p to get an ounce of Gallaghers Condor Plug for the oul lad's pipe when he came in from work.
