    Hi all,

Was in training for the 10k Aware Xmas run and ended up, with what I thought was a torn calf muscle, rested for three day but still couldnt walk on it, pain was through the roof :(. Came back from a physio yesterday and she diagnosed it as Compartment syndrome!!

Anyone got any dealings with this? Was told to rest and ice pack it, with weekly visits.

    Cheers

    Get a second opinion.

Compartment syndrome can only be correctly diagnosed using intra-compartmental pressure readings before and after exercise or using MRI (or some other form of diagnostic) Imaging before and after exercise.

All other possibilities must be ruled out beforehand e.g. MTSS (also known as shin splints), stress fracture, muscle strains, referred pain, biomechanical issues, etc.

If you do suffer from compartment syndrome and it has not been caused by any underlying issues (see above) then the usual form of treatment is fascial release which has varying degrees of success.

Just get a second opinion and make sure that the person ou are seeing is a fully qualified Chartered Physiotherapist, Athletic Trainer, Sports Rehabilitator

I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome about 6 years ago. I had started doing a bit of running after years of doing very little exercise so i was told that the muscles on the front of my shins had out grown the fascia surrounding them. It got so bad that even a fast walk would leave me in agony. I went to a consultant and he examined my legs, sent me out for a 15 minute run and re examined after it. My problem areas were rock hard as the muscle had expanded against the fascia. I had both legs operated on and havent had a problem since. They just released the fascia holding the muscle, two small scars on each shin. I'd recommend you get another opinion just to be on the safe side
