From Monday next (Dec 1st) for one week, Tesco are running a special offer on Alcohol slabs.

    Guinness
    Budweiser
    Carlsberg
    Heineken
    Bulmers

    Two slabs for €50

The bulmers is 18x500ml cans but the others are 24x500ml cans and the Guinness is draught.
It's Special "Christmas wrapped" slabs only and will not work on 24 loose 500ml cans. 24 loose will work out around €46.
As with similar offers of this type there probably won't be a quota at the beginning but as soon as they realise how fast they're selling they'll enforce a quota, then they'll probably run out by the middle of the week, so get in early to be guaranteed getting what you want.

New laws forbid selling alcohol from anywhere but the alcohol section so you won't find these at the entrance and the space might be limited in stores alcohol section so there'll be a good chance of stock out the back .

    Cheers

    Jarvis

Is it still cheaper to make the trip to Newry when you're looking for bulk beer?

Is this 24 cans for the €50 or is it x2 and therefore 48 cans for €50

48 for €50 I imagine ... otherwise this thread would be in Consumer Issues instead of Bargain Alerts :pac:

:D I only drink bulmers so not sure of the other prices! If its 36 cans of bulmers for €50 its a great deal. Pretty much 2 for the price of 1.

Hopefully there will still be stock by the time I get to go in :(

:pac:I thought it was 24 cans of Bulmers for €50, which would still be cheaper than some places sell it normally.

    Is the strength 4.3%?

I have sometimes seen bargains which at first glance seemed great, but if the alcohol content is lower, then the vat and duty liability will be lower, so the bargain is often not as good as seems.

Store them in someone else's house until Christmas. I always stash mine in my Mam's house. She won't let me touch them until Christmas.

Heineken is 4.3% the stuff brewed in Cork and I'm guessing the one on offer, There is also a more expensive 5% Heineken, Imported from the UK afaik

Most heineken you get now is brewed in holland, I am pretty sure this stuff on offer is too, and so is the 5% ones (brewed in holland).

What confuses people is the can is made for the irish market, so people see cork mentioned and presume it is brewed there. Sometimes beer is canned here, but still brewed there.

AFAIK they just brew regular heineken and dilute it down to 4.3% for here, and some times to 3.4% in the UK (like some other poster mentioned about apparent bargains). This is meant to be a common practise. I think guinness foreign export is 7.4% and is not diluted, but i think this same 7.4% is diluted down to make either draught or extra stout, at 4.2%.

My mate was in tesco today, 2 crates per customer quota, which is good in a way, better chance of getting some.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭boopolo

€25 per case is not a bad price at all.
Asda was selling 24 x long necks for £14.98 (no special offers)

    This Heiniken is 5%

For small quanties of unusual there were several 3 for £4
3 pint (550) bottles of newcastle ale :D for 4 quid. Hadn't drank it for a while.
The 7.5% Guinness (the one mentioned by ruprect back in this thread) was £4 for 3 small (330) bottles.

    Boo
