It should be a barrell of laughs, according to Met Eireann:
Extremely cold Friday night with a very severe frost and perhaps some freezing fog, leading to icy roads in many areas. Air temperatures are likely to fall as low as minus 4 C or minus 5 C in many inland parts. Scattered showers of hail, sleet and snow also, mainly in coastal areas, where some could be thundery. Saturday will be very cold with highest temperatures of only 3 C to 6 C at best, though frost and fog could linger in some areas. Much of the country will be dry, with bright or sunny spells, but there will be further wintry showers, mainly near coasts. Winds will be moderate to fresh north to northeast.

Well, you heard it folks, better get the snow chains on your tyres, unless you want to get on Caroline's wimp list.

    9:30 Dundrum OK for everyone?

Cycling through falling snow, particularly in the dark, is a magical experience (as long as it's not too windy or icy).

I can't make it out after 9am this Saturday (child minding duties), but I might go out at either midnight or 5am, if it looks nice.

Ha, I should be along on Saturday. Will have to take it easy though, my knee is still playing up.

I think "Blorg outshone by Lumen" would be more accurate

I am in, thought my usual careful descending may be slower with increased risk of slippage.

I hope my wiggle bib-tights arrive by saturday...

If there's snow on the ground I think hot port is called for, in every pub that is passed.

can I divert the topic of this thread for a second?

What are, in the cycling world, regarded as the best tyres for icy/winter conditions?

I have this semi-irrational fear of losing traction and slipping off coming round a bend. I know a lot of it will come down to technique, but is there any tyre that meets this criteria? Or perhaps some kind of placebo tyre? My back wheel is a Vittoria Corsa, which I like. The front one is some Ridley piece of junk which doesn't hold the road well at all.

Just got two pairs of these Descente Coldout tights in the post this morning. I heartily recommend them BTW, they are very comfortable and that price on PBK is great (I had one pair already.) I take a large in these but generally an XL in "continental" short sizing if that helps any with sizing.

In icy conditions this is in no way an irrational fear, you definitely can come off quite easily, bike has slid out under me in the past and I wouldn't think any tyre would have changed that. I would take bends carefully. Beyond that I don't know if there is such thing as a tyre that is "better" in the realm of normal road tyres (as long as you are NOT on Armadillos.) For mountain bikes you can actually get snow tyres with metal studs in them.

If I had a cyclocross bike, this guide would help:

oh, sorry to skew this thread in a different direction again, but:

Maybe next saturday we could have that "boards christmas spin" that people were interested in? I imagine it would be like a regular spin but everyone stopping off either in Enniskerry or Johnny' Foxes for some food and chat??

I will stop flogging that horse now.

Sounds good. When you say next Saturday, do you mean this Saturday the 29th?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

No, the one after that...would I be correct in saying that is saturday week??

EDIT: Unless people prefer this saturday of course.

Why don't we save it for closer to christmas day, when we can get away with wearing santa hats
