Muuuuuuuuch better episode this week! Hoping the eclipse will give Peter back his powers and, with a bit of luck, give Sylar back his evil. A big part of the problem of recent episodes has been the lack of HRG. Good to see him back. And I always love when the Haitian's in town.

Thought it was pretty good. Arthur dont have his powers so it seems too. Was that Seth Green in the comic book store?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,115 ✭✭✭✭Nervous Wreck

Yeah, Seth Green and Breckin Meyer. Strange cameos but cool! Yeah, Arthur don't have no powers. Slick. Someone needs to beat his ass.

since the eclipse has the power to give/take powers surely this would of happened already at some stage during the days since the company started up way back when so why is it such a shock to the elders (Arthur) now.

now we know what Daphne has been afraid of the whole time, i can see why she didn't want to go back to her "old life".

Oh god I hope Claire dies!

Thought it was a bit silly Sylar and Elle not knowing their powers were out.

I really really really hope Claire dies. And that Sylar gets a haircut.

The answer to the eclipse problem.....

They're all actually from Krypton. Their powers are diminished without the Earth's yellow Sun.

I think it means he wants out of his contract on the show.

Though I wish Claire would die, this show has proven time and time again that it is unable to completely kill off any "main" characters - and since Claire is normally invulnerable, the whole Eclipse thing is yet another fake out that she may (gasp!) die...

Agree with everyone on the Eclipse part - why is the older generation not aware of what happens during one and why is Arthur even worried that their powers won't come back (and had Cletus, the flame throwing yokel, kick Mohinder's a** into finding a solution)? Wouldn't, um, waiting for the Eclipse to be over, fix the problem? Then again, the Eclipse may last forever, given how it is presented on the show...

And what the hell was up with all the Matt/Daphne/Hiro/Ando crap? "You must save Daphne"... from what? Her crutches or from corn-on-the-cob? And why should we care anyway?

A long solar eclipse like that would've been predicted way in advance by the weather stations. Why would they even need special powers know it's coming? Why would the moon stop orbiting the earth? I am not sure if you see a full eclipse in Kansas you will see the same thing in the rest of the world either. What kind of bs reason will they give for all the heroes loosing their powers during a solar eclipse. Are the powers a result of genetic mutation or not? It all seems a little too stupid to take seriously or be entertaining.

It's a comic book themed tv show about superheroes. How could you possibly, not have seen something like this coming?

    I mean... Kryptonite.

It's about creating conflict, who cares if it's believeable or not, it's about suspending disbelief to begin with. What matters is if you enjoy it or not, which doesnt appear to be the case.

Personally, I thought it was pretty good, but the way every single aspect of the show is made out to be life or death is a little tiring.

Would you like a cheese sandwhich, of DOOM! Save the sandwhich, save the world!

my predictions, HRG will shoot Elle and kill her (She is only a 'special guest') Slyar wil go back to his best ... Everyone gets their power back

a few more people will get powers (HRG? Ando?)

I've resigned myself to turning my brain off when heroes starts. Anyone notice the hint to the Haitians past when Peter and Nathan first get into the jungle? Or am I the only one whos read the comics :(

In regards to the eclipse. Here is an image of what an eclipse on earth looks like:

    http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap990830.html

It doesn't near cover as much of the earth as this show is making out, but then again, my brain was switched off so I didn't notice until the episode was over.

Why's everyone so concerned over the unrealism of the eclipse? It's a show in which the main characters can fly, shoot electricity from their palms, use telekinesis, heal from any wound and travel through time... I think we're meant to let some stuff go......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

First episode I've really enjoyed in a good long while.

    Meh, twas alright.

I agree with people about the eclipse. It's not that it somehow removes something from the believability of the show, its just that it was an event used in the first episode to link all the heroes together and foreshadowed (not a pun I hope) their shared destiny to unite and save the world.

Yet here it is given literal meaning and is being used as a cosmic force that somehow controls powers. Please, its like the writers are struggling to create a mythology where one doesn't exist and probably isn't needed.

Hey, wasn't there an eclipse at the start of season 2 when Hiro teleported back to feudal japan, and didn't Hiro use his ability to stop a hail of arrows?

Once again, its not the eclipse that is unbelievable, its that the writers seem to neglect these glaring plot holes and fail to realise that one of the important components of good storytelling is consistency, of which heroes seems to be lacking. Elle/Sylar are bad, no wait good, no they are bad now, oh good for a bit. Hopefully they will stay bad, much more fun!

Speaking of consistency, how many times has Clare got mad at, forgiven and then got mad at her father again? Oh, and what happened to good old "sporting montages". Watching Clare whack planks around a house seems like the reason Meredith trained her at the start: to watch Clare get hot and sweaty.

Anyway, it was good. It looks like Peter and Nathan will have some brotherly bonding in the jungle, contrasted by the conflict between Haitian and Haitian's warlord brother.

Also, worst Heroes cliffhanger ever! I think even a 2 year old could work out what will happen next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭Sarn

Still wishing for Claire the moan to die.

Will this be how Peter gets his powers back, a kind of power reboot? No doubt he'll get shot trying to save Nathan, the eclipse will end and then he'll heal. Actually scratch that. As they'll be travelling with the Haitian he won't realise his powers have returned until some life or death situation.

Thought I saw Seth Green's name at the start, always nice having a few cameos.

Ok, well nothing too imaginative, but my guess would be:
HRG goes to shoot Sylar. At the very moment before the bullet impacts, the eclipse is over and Sylar along with all the other heroes regains his abilities, thus following the heroes tradition of not following through on an interesting premise.

But I have been wrong many, many times before. So we shall see.

she is down for the cast for another few episodes (all the remaining comfirmed one actually) on tv.com. so doubt she will die.

There was so assumably thats what tiggered Adam's powers. But how many eclipses have there been since then? It there is only a select few that trigger abilities then what makes those eclipses so different?

    Agree.

I thought it was a decent episode up to the eclipse. I was thinking that their powers are only suspended during the eclipse. Will have to wait until next week to see. But I guess it won't turn out that way. Why else have the formula? But that will mean that any hero that had powers before this eclipse will loose then. So any 'new' hero will have to either have gotten the formula or had their powers triggered by this eclipse.

EDIT: Peter said that Nathan first flew around the time of an eclipse. This eclipse was at the start of season 1 episode 1. But Nathan's car crash was before this and he flew then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

They can't kill Elle, she is the only reason I watch it now :)

good spot Don. I suppose we could go on and on about the eclipse. I still like the show, even if it is becoming harder to now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,067 ✭✭✭Gunmonkey

I don't think eclipses trigger powers in people, they are there in their genes and only manifest at times of stress (or in Claires case, chopping off your pinky with a pair of scissors). Peter was sharing dreams of the future with Charles Devraux (sp?) before the eclipse, a power he gained from his mother and maybe part of his fathers repetoire.

The earlier eclipses were more an image, or a representation of the changes in peoples lives that the powers brought. Think of the death card in tarot, it doesn't mean death itself but the end of one facet of life and beginning of another. Plus, 2 full solar eclipses within the year or so since the events of episode 1 and now, can't remember them being so commonplace!! Someone controlling it as a way to nullify powers? Whatever happened to the giant rock demon Isaac painted that some thought was the big bad for season 2?

Meh, lets wait till next week, since this a 2 parter it could be the last before mid-season break and Chapter 4 is meant to begin next year.

Don't know how accurate this is but IMDB lists the next two episodes. "The Eclipse Part Two" and "Our Father" as scheduled to air on the 1st... Maybe we're in for a double next week....!

You are indeed correct, for some reason we are getting a double bill "volume" finale.

I dunno... 40 minutes a week is about all I can handle these days. They may be pushing their luck.

So far I think season 3 has been a big improvement on season 2... but still not enough of an improvement to make it actually good.

Didn't like this weeks episode at all... and yes... the eclipse thing does irritate me. I can accept genetic mutations somehow granting special abilities... I can't accept that the shadow of the moon is somehow magic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭Volvagia

They tried a bit harder this week and it payed off in some parts, but flopped in others just like the rest of the season with a lack of consistency.

The best bit imo was when daphne's dad said to parkman "Why are you turning your face sideways" I dont really like chubby parkman and this bit made me crack up.

The eclipse was a bit annoying, and i didn't like the way they brought in another new character and story arc with the Haitains brother. I quite enjoyed seeing Noah dislocated sylars shoulder, but the rest of the episode with sylar and elles budding romance just didn't keep my interest.

I'll keep watching and i reckon its going to finish better than the volume started but that's not saying much.

Guh, another load of dreck. Not "so bad it's good" level of bad, just tedious, inconsistent nonsense with people behaving according to what the next plot development requires.

Nathan's religious conversion and willingness to just wander off and do random crap is strangely not causing any conflict with his day job as a Senator, which seems a bit ridiculous.

The Sylar and Elle thing is like someone decided that copying Natural Born Killers only without the stuff that made the film any good. Sylar seems to be changing his personality every 20 minutes, and Elle doesn't seem to know whether she's happy and stable, wrong in the brain, or just a petulant child with Daddy issues.

Speaking of Daddy issues, I hope Claire gets killed or flattened or something. Talk about your boring tedious character. Ditto for Suresh and his claptrap that he's attempting to pass off as "Science".

Oh, and they are just ignoring the whole thing about 9th Wonders being written/drawn/published by a guy who's been dead nearly a year. Nice to know that they care about the internal consistency of their plot devices.

High points of the episode include Chumpy McChumpface getting owned by Daphne's dad, Hiro's "the corn will not stop" (in an unbelievably crap sort of a way), and Sylar's puzzled look on discovering his powers don't work. Not enough to rescue the episode, unfortunately :(

If the conclusion of the volume pulls something AMAZING out of thin air, the shonky storytelling and wooden characterisation may turn out to have been worth it. I'm not holding my breath though, and I'm guessing that Volume 4 will be the point at which I decide I'm not arsed watching any more...

    OR
HRG is about to pull the trigger and blow sylars brains across the house, leaving only his lips smattered on elle when his wife rings him to tell him that claire's dying. So instead of taking the two seconds required to kill one of the most interesting characters in the show and THEN driving seeing to one of the most irritating characters in the show, he pegs it. I mean, it would have been two seconds, its not like he has travel on the M50!

    Least thats what I reckon

So if ever for example they make a spiderman movie where he discovers wrigleys chewing gum wrappers take his powers away you'll be ok with that because after all he has the powers of a spider so we have to accept any kind of ridiculous concept?

Heroes consistently breaks all the rules in terms of creating a well structured fantasy world and yet it's entertaining a lot of the time. I can understand how, for example, a genetic mutation might make someone stronger but give them the ability to fly?

All I'm saying is that because the subject matter here is fantasy it does not mean you have to sit back and accept every ridiculous new concept thrown in to the equation. I think the writers just sit in a room and say "yeah that would be way cool. How do we explain it? Who cares."

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,035 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

    In the predictions you forgot:-
Daphne says "see now you know I can't walk you won't love me". Matt insists he does and she gradually believes him in about 3 seconds of facial close up and they hug/kiss whatever until about three episodes down the line they have another argument and make-up and rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

No no, I agree with you there but it's hardly the worst thing they've done so far. The most interesting thing that's happened in the last few episodes is the loss of powers, since it gives a chance for change (in direction for some storylines/characters etc). It's a pity they couldn't find a better device to facilitate this but, in my opinion, the end justifies the means in this circumstance. Now if they'd just kill Mohinder and make Sylar evil again.....
