Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.........

    Hi all,

Time to get back to physical exercise. I'm 5'8" tall and touching 9 stone at present and 22 years old, now I have lost about 3/4 of a stone due to having a virus last month and now I'm shaking off a flu. So once that's out of the way it's back into training. Now my motivation is to get fitter and stronger, first and foremost. Number 2 would be getting back into my Hurling teams starting 15. I used to command a place at the age of 17/18 and haven't been near starting in the last 3 years. Due to being away in college in Galway and work in Dublin I wasn't training at all compared to at least 3 times a week back then. I went from one of the more fitter and quicker squad members to someone who can barely sprint without collapsing and at that I've noticeably lost a couple of yards of pace. My stamina is non-existent at present. Now I don't smoke at all and I'm by no means a big drinker but I like a good night every now and then fwiw.

The plan is to get stronger over the winter by primarily lifting weights and maybe the odd 5 a side game thrown in to keep a decent mix. Once spring comes back around I'll get back into the cardio and sprinting.

So I'm looking to pretty much going along the lines of the main trinity of lifting (Dead/bench/squat) and I'm willing to invest in a rack and/or bench at a reasonable price, I already have a set of dumbells and a mat for other workouts... Can anyone suggest a reasonable amount of money to be spending on the gear or even suggest some gear as it is? I'd purchase 2nd hand too with no qualms.

What kind of routines would I be looking to use to emphasize strength and power to start with? I'm not looking to put on massive weight here either but a little bit would be no harm I suppose, besides it'd pretty fruitless concentrating on mass as all my family pretty much are skinny endomorphs that eat everything and stay the same size.

Also one of my mates who lifts a bit intermittently said I should concentrate on strengthening and stretching my core, back and abs for a couple of weeks before I start too. Is this reasonable advice too?

One more thing I see on various threads and forums is about getting and keeping the correct form. What is the best way to go about this? Just get an experienced lifter to critique me in person?

    Regards,
    Richie.
