What happens when Boardsies start dying?

Yes I know it's a morbid thought and all that but it is going to happen one day.

The Boards.ie general populace would be considered quite young in the grand scheme of things due to the internet only really being readily accessible in the last 10 to 15 years. I'd say for the most part posters fall into the 20-40 year old bracket with some either side. So that means in roughly 2038-2048 the first lot of the group will naturally succumb to old age.

So what do we do? Will there be a day of mourning for each one? Boards could be ten or twenty times bigger by then so posters could be dropping like flies!

Anyway, just something to ponder over lunch this Friday.

P.S. I'm touching a lot of wood as I type this (I have another tab open with Slydice )

A number of people who use boards have already died.

To actually address your comment, you'll tend to see a natural recycling of members over the years. I imagine in 2040, the vast bulk of people around now probably won't be posting here (if here even exists) and they'll have been replaced by a younger generation.

To take a more grim thought, if the average age of boardsies is between 25 and 35, and the death rate for that age group is 1 per 1,000, then we will lose 188 people this year. To be more precise, of the 4,253 people online right now, we will lose at least 4 of them in the next 12 months.

Thanks for fucking up everyone's Friday, Xavi.

Well one or two Boardsies have past away in the last few years ! Usually you'd see a post in PI if it was a known and active member on boards.

Yeah Xavi6 - wrecking the buzz

To be honest, would anybody actually know? If somebody died suddenly, and their real-life and boards circles were not acquainted....

Well I'm not going to be one of them. Maybe if I kill four boardsies, the reaper's quota will be filled and he'll be satisfied.

Trust me when they are acquainted it can be a pain in the ass ... especially when tales of your demise are less than accurate!

If you are an active member on boards for the majority of your life, and you die of old age nobody will go to your funeral, because the odds are that you had no friends.

Scenic911 died almost exactly a year back (cancer) so a thought for his family wouldn't go amiss this weekend.

I know yeah. And there was an incident earlier today that got the thought in my head, hence the thread.

As well as scenic911, FranknFurter who was mod of Animal/Pet Issues has also sadly passed.

    You post on another forum??

Seriously though, we will and have lose/lost people. How many people just stop posting? Just one day vanish?
I haven't seen CuteSmileygirl in aaages, or a few other once prolific posters are now very, very silent. God knows how many are dead.

That being said, if a poster here is friends with another boardsie in real life, I think you'll find that they will let everyone know. I have at least three boardsies who will know that I am dead.

In an odd way you will. Probably some researcher in 100 years will use boards to look back at society today, and will read a post of yours.

It's up to you what that post says, and what aspect of you it conveys.

Aye. Sure when I was banned from AH a couple of years back it was because of one of these threads, very irreverently phrased, just at a mates (who was a boardsie) anniversary.

Oh and i called some dickhead a dickhead. What a dickhead. think that was part of the reason too.
