Has anyone ever actually been stung by the Tv license man?

It must be 4 years ago at least since he called to the home house asking did we have a tv license, I said I hadn't a clue. He said "you don't, court aperience and a hefty fine" Sound says I, I'll pay it tomorrow. "Sound so" he says. Never bought one, no court aperience or a hefty fine.

Yep, 5 years ago in Galway district court.
200 euro fine it was. I think it's 1000 euro now

Never bought one again though, I didn't learn my lesson :P
In fact, don't have one now and I was praising RTE in another thread today, must get one so

I love how their idea of an advert is a threat. That way there's no "Hey, wait a second, Irish terrestrial TV isn't worth f*ck all. I don't give a sh*t about the diddly-aye on TG4, the pastey faced 'celebrities' on TV3 or the constant mind numbing raging of Ireland's elderly on RTE! All I want my TV is for the odd Super Sunday football and to watch a few DVDs I burned from some torrents. In fact, GTFO Mr TV License Inspector."

What rights does he have when it comes to ascertaining whether you need a license or not? ie. if you refuse him entry to the house, do you get a fine? What if you, say, delay him at the door while you're hiding your tvs?

Also, am I right in thinking that you have to have a license for anything capable of picking up RTÉ, etc. ? So even if you only use it for DVDs...

Yeah, that's how the law is worded. Pretty shitty.

Interestingly enough the BBC have an opt-out system, if you use your set for consoles/dvd's. Which is decent of them.

    What's an aperience?

An aperience is the word for when you poop during an orgasm.
    It's such a pretty word.

One per household with any number of TVs. Only difference is if the building is subdivided into multiple premises (i.e. an apartment block), then you'll need one per premises. Also, if you own two houses and both have TVs, you need a license for each house

The law is that anything capable of receiving a TV signal needs a license, so unused and/or broken TVs need a license too. Strange how coat hangers can receive a signal but nobody needs a license for them...

Actually got the poxy "death threat" from them this week. First letter in 5 years telling me to buy licence etc so i had a good run.

On my to do list ... honest ;)

Interesting. If I leave my tv in the garden, they cant do anything
If mr inspector came along, id ensure to have porn on the tv and invite him in. Lock the door behind him and everything. Id say he'll just want to leave any say nothing about it.

*wanders off to download more porn and buy a chubb lock*

I moved in around this time last year and by around Feb I got the knock on the door. I went down to the post office and I was one of 5 people paying their tv license in a small village.

The postmistress said the guy decided to do a blitz on the villages around the place with the 100's of new houses.

Im not getting another one though. One in a lifetime is enough. Im not here during the day EVER and I dont give my name to strangers unless he shows me id and then I definately will not give him my name.

My company was renting a house full furnished including tv for us in Cork. My colleague answered the door on Saturday and the guy asked him his name. He stupidly gave him his name and suggested its either our boss or the landlords responsibility because none of us own it. They summonsed him to court and the judge threw it out saying because its not his property nor the tv then its not down to him.

+1. Now in the finest AH tradition, can we all please come up with suitable punishments? I'll get the ball rolling with giving him a scalpel and threatening to kill his family unless he cuts off his own manhood and eats it. Then just as he finally chokes down the last of his giblets, we boil his family in oil anyway. If this doesn't kill him, he should be hung drawn and quartered..... while boiling in oil.

With a projector or very large PC monitor, you should be able to get away without paying. As long as you don't have anything that can actually receive RTE.

The TV license inspector failed his application for the position of traffic warden because he just hadn't enough personality. That is why he does what he does.

WTF is the idea behind a TV license? I can (half) understand cars, dogs and guns having to be licensed to keep check on them. What if you decide to view your favorite shows online which is becoming more and more common. Do you still need a license even if you chucked your TV out the window?

Was on the radio last year that they were going to make changes to the law on tv licences to reflect the growing popularity of ppl now watching tv on computers and in the future phones etc. that licences will also cover other electronics like computers etc. So if there's a computer in the house you will have to pay for a licence. Total bullcrap imo and never happen...hopefully!

I didn't realise that a little tv licence man ACTUALLY goes around to people's houses. What does he do anyway? Does he just ask you if you have one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭axel rose

Yea, they do call. It happened to me a few years ago. The bell rang at about 8 in the evening, as I opened the door, this old guys head appeared around the door. (think of a giraffe looking around a corner without looking). He showed me his ID and mumbled something about my license.
Lucky me-I bought it that morning! :D
He kept saying stuff like- Are you sure? For this house? Is it colour? Then he checked a list and crossed me off. That kept me smug for the week! (It was a quiet week)

We don't have TV licenses in Australia but we do have a government that are trying to censor the internet. This is even worse imo.

I wonder if there was a way to block or filter the national channels in Eire would you still have to pay for a license?

You would still have to pay. Anything capable of receiving a signal including anything that can be repaired to receive a signal needs a licence.

I don't know if anyone's ever been done for a broken telly but I think that rule is in place to stop people temporarily pulling out the fuse or similar while the inspector is around. If the screen is smashed in I can't see any judge imposing a hefty fine.

If it looks recently smashed you might still get done for it. Like if it's still sitting in the corner of your sitting room, they'll know you just did it to get off the fine. So then you'll get lumped with a fine and you'll have no telly.

Now if you were to do something else with those steel-toe caps when the RTÉ tax collector comes knocking....... :D

I think we've received about 80 letters addressed to a girl called "Ann Hegarty" to our apartment this year demanding that she pay her TV licence.

If the bastard ever does try and call to our house he'll never get in coz there are no numbers on the buzzers outside our apartment block.

If he hits the right button on the offchance we'll just say: 1) Ann Hegarty doesn't live here and 2) we don't watch fair city so f**k off

I don't have a source on this, but license fees are paid to fund the national broadcaster. However, due to EU regulations, national broadcasting stations cannot receive money from advertising if they are taking the license fees, which is why the BBC has no ads. RTE does have ads, and is fined by the EU every year because of it. But the license fee income outweighs the fine paid, so they stay advertising anyway

    In Ireland.

Presuming that if you live in Ireland and watch Irish channels you have to pay for a license regardless of whether its on the box or soon to be online. I can just picture the day when they send threatening emails asking me to pay for a license because I downloaded some show off RTE.

If you have a new house that never had a TV licence, they probably wont have your house on record, so wont be checking it for a licence.

AFAIK, the TV Licence blokes cant come into your house (similar to the guards needing a warrant, and all that jazz) so if you just tell them you dont have a telly, they cant really do anything. Same goes for having a TV card in your PC (if it comes up).

When a load of new estates were build in my home town the licence fella done a blitz on the lot of them. Came to my house just as I was unloading a new tv from the car ...

"I hope you have a licence for that" he said ... to which I replied ... "A licence, I dont even have a fcukin plug for it yet!".

Busy cnut came around a week to the day to see if Id got one.

As for the advert ... By the look of him I reckon that inspector looks more likely to be stealing your telly than looking for a licence

They have that problem in the UK at the moment, more so because the BBC are about to broadcast their programmes over the internet. They say that they'll still enforce the Tv licence law for anyone who views these programmes, but the ISPs like BT and Tiscali have said they aren't going to hand over any customer information about who has viewed the programmes unless they are forced to by law....so basically at the moment the BBC can't enforce that.

Our law is worded differently though, unfortunately.

Yeah they were after me for a while , I just won't get one I hate RTE it's absulute crap and I don't watch it. He called during dinner one evening so I answer the door and this bloke asks me my names, I ask why and he goes fumbling around his pocket for about 30 seconds and then in the gayest/i'm a cop way he turns around and shoves his ID in my face saying.

    "TV licence inspector sir!"

I wanted to set my Rottweiler on him.
