Sorry if you know this already...

Was going to post to say how annoyed I get with him during his punidtry looking at the Camera instead of either of the 2 lads when I came across his Wiki entry. I now feel very guilty..poor fellow :(

Gayle was in a relationship with Rhoni Reuter, originally of Potosi, Wisconsin, and had been sharing a condominium with her in the Chicago, Illinois suburb of Deerfield. On October 4, 2007, Reuter - who was approximately seven months pregnant with Gayle's child - was shot and killed at home, along with her unborn daughter.

That's harsh. He is a million times better than Nick Halling as a pundit too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,360 ✭✭✭death1234567

Isn't that an American thing, to look straight at the camera rather than the other pundits? He's a decent pundit though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,087 ✭✭✭Trampas

It is good that the talk to the camera and not to the others.

I think it is better that they look at the camera as I feel he is giving you the answer and not just a conversation between the others going on.

    Butch Harmon does it also.

Meh. I've always thought he was one of the more decent pundits on SKY certainly better then Halling. Hopefully Reinebold joins the crew during playoff time

I like him tbh, but i like most of the lads in the studio when it comes down to it, nick isnt that bad in fairness! most of them are 10 times better and less annoying then soccer or rubgy analysts

Yeah. While they might not be as good as the guys working for some of the US networks, they still do an excellent job. Gayle is very articulate. And I get the impression that the three of them genuinely enjoy working together and the gig itself as a whole - which is a nice added bonus to things imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭Funkyzeit

He is in fairness extremely well spoken but I find him a bit dry - I know it's a bit of a paradox but I hate that American Style looking into the camera...

As for Halling I may be going out on a limb but I think he's the business - he has a bit of character about him and I like his no nonsense approach.

Anyway sad to hear that story..:(

I like Halling. I like Gayle. I like them all, except Deoin Sanders on the NFL show could do with toning it down, and Kevin Cadle on Sky could do with ramping it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭Sea Devils

The problem with Cadle and his Basketball coaching career will show this he seems to be much more knowledgable about that Sport then he does with Football.

Still regardless no one can be as bad as Ian Allen or Scott Couper. One would think going by the number of times Couper showed off his Superbowl ring that he actually scored the winning TD

By the way, Deion's first two kids are 'Deion Jr', which is fine, and 'Deiondra' which suggests self obsession.

Nobody can beat George Foreman in that regard!! From wiki: Foreman has 10 children, and each of his five sons are named George: George Jr., George III, George IV, George V, and George VI. One of his daughters is called Georgetta.

Is that some Deion hatred I'm hearing? The guy is a genius. He's got his hands-arched together, quiet-toned, "I'm talking about Adam Jones" mode, and then he's got his COACH!!! RICH!!! POCKET HERCULES!!!! mode. Both of which are great.

I think it's just hard going from watching Marshall Faulk, Terrell Davis, Deion Sanders, Steve Mariucci, Warren Sapp, Jamie Dukes, etc, etc, etc on NFLN (or nfl.com/videos) to eh... Nick Halling. Who is a pundit because he was into the NFL in the UK before anyone else was, it seems.

Co-signed. I've roughly seen Mike Carlson five times on TV yet every show I've seen him do on TV he blows away Halliing in the knowlege aspect.

I like Gayle, I think he gives some good insights. Ian Allen on the other hand just isn't at the pundit races.

Hopefully not. His ability to constantly flog off his Superbowl ring as if he scored the winning touchdown is one of the most annoying things about his analyst role.

What ever happened to Cecil Martin?

Note: I'm adding Dieondra to the list of names (along with D'Brickashaw, Plaxico, etc.) for Prop 402 "African Amercians should not under any circumstances be allowed to name children". Vote Yes on 402!!
Yeah cos death is cool name.

Nope he's just loud, annoying and badly dressed (those long suit jackets are terrible). 21st and Prime isn't bad though, "its primetime baby". On Total access its Rod Woodson + Terrell Davis FTW.

A tad racist no? Who cares what people call their children. I googled my name once billions of people with the same name. Sometimes I wish I had a weird or unique name.

I like Halling, as good as you would get and not grating on the ears.

Haha I got bullied at school anyway so it would have been like for like. Then I realised I was far bigger than the bully and knocked him out :D:D

But believe it or not these kids dont get bullied in school in the US as they are used to strange names especially in public schools.

My favourite name is Laveranues "Lavernius" Coles. Closely followed by D'Brickishaw. I don't think anyone would have bullied D'Brickishaw Ferguson in school somehow.

You can have all the knowledge in the world and still be a useless pundit. Problem with Halling imo is that he argues silly points with ex NFL players and when he gets caught contradicting himself he tries to brush it off. But he is the best of the bad bunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Royal Seahawk

Halling is alright,he's a bit of fun and he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously,so maybe we shouldn't either. Shaun Gayle goes on a bit for my liking, but he does have some good points. Ian Allen has no business being a pundit, and neither do any of them 'BritBall' veterans they have on from time to time.

The american nfl guys are all awful. I just cant handle it, it seems far to shoddy and amateurish.

I'd definitly have to give the guys props for going from 6pm-4am straight though, I'd say that is extremely diffiult.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭Sea Devils

I remember with Ian Allen him and Nick were talking about Alex Smith with Allen saying the problem was he never got a wily veteran to show him the NFL and mentor him. Nobody mentioned that Dilfer had been there the previous few seasons....

My only real dislike of Sky's NFL coverage is watching the red button game which can be very confusing with the odd pauses for the adverts and then intermittent highlight reels that just make it confusing

come on Trent Dilfer is hardly a wily veteran sure he won a superbowl but he wasn't that good and as a result got cut in the off season! hardly the best guy to show Smith the ropes!

I didn't mean in terms of playing quality belieive me most Niner fans know how much he sucked but in terms of how long he played 12 years previously before he was traded to San Francisco...

I should have worded my post better though

I can't stand the punditry on NFL Network. American pundits on the whole are annoying to begin with, all of them being spat off the same production line of analyst 'prep' agencies who see to it they never open their mouths without flailing their arms around like traffic-wardens; I'd honestly love to see them articulate a point with their hands tied behind their back.

But NFL Network is just ridiculous: the guitar solos over highlights, the near strobe light effects you see on their set, cameras on a roller-coaster track, the rehearsed arguments the winner of which is probably decided by a focus group - it's just so plastic and formulaic, relying on PAZZZ and ZAZZZ to keep the audience hyponotised into watching an hour long broadcast that doesn't communicate a single point of worth. No wonder half the country are diagnosed with ADHD. Hey, maybe it's me, and when Saunders baselessly attributes a team's victory to "gettin it to their playmaker" or "give it to the guy who'll make a play" <ARM MOVEMENT ARM MOVEMENT> he's tapping into a critical faculty of sporting analysis that's beyond my comprehension... but I somehow doubt it....

I like the Sky Coverage because it's just three (the odd time two) lads in a studio, the conversation seems genuine and the banter isn't scripted. I have sneaking suspicions their emails may be plants, but on the whole they do a good job (with what I'd imagine is a pittens of a budget compared to other Sky Sports broadcasts). End of the day they're there to fill the gaps in ad breaks. Anyone who wants insight into the game, log onto Gregg Easterbrook's article or a website of one of the US Newspapers, because I'm afraid you won't find it on a TV show.

But does the blatant difference in actual knowledge of the game between the basketball coach, ex-average pro and street enthusiast vs. hall of famers not annoy you? When you get beyond the stuff they do to get ADHD kids in California to watch, there is so much more decent commentary on NFLN than Sky. I mean, you can't expect to be a competition, considering Sky's NFL budget appears not to extend past one of each team's helmet and a pre-fab for the guys to sit in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

See my problem with the Hall of Famers vs. Knowledgeless Enthusiasts argument is that a good football player does not equate to a good analyst and by corollary, you should not need to have been a hall of famer to provide good insight. Now I'll accept that NFLN occasionaly have reports from journalists, former coaches and former players whose opinions I respect (Mariucci, Shefter etc) but most of the times I've watched it, I've seen former pros prattle on about "giving the ball to your playmaker", "give it to the guy who gets it done", "make plays, make plays, make plays" and other rhetorical statements that show they know little about the tactical components that are essential to winning in football.

The NFL Network guys I would agree are terrible but still a level above Halling and Co in my opinion. ESPN, FOX and CBS have the best pundits and commentators in the game hence why they have the biggest contracts and money. The NFLN didnt want to spend to much on this its seems considering they only show 1 game a week up November then 2 games a week from the end of November with the Thursday late game. Why waste alot of money on it when you have the 3 big guns showing your games anyways.

Dont get me wrong when I say I dont like Nick Halling. I spend alot of time in America and compared to American broadcasts Sky would be a semi pro player in a Professional League. Not quite good enough to play in the Pros but good enough to get paid in a semi pro league in Europe. Nick Halling to me is just like me and you knows alot about the game but doesnt know when he is wrong because he sticks to his own opinions and points. Just like all us normal Joes. And he tends to look at his laptop alot or the little monitor that is most likely in front of him. But kudos to Sky for giving us so much NFL this side of the Atlantic though. Nick will have to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Royal Seahawk

I wouldn't be a massive fan of Mariucci, the way his voice volume goes up and down as he's discussing the latest text Brett Favre sent him does my head in. Schefter is pretty good, he seems to have great contacts and a great insider knowledge of the league. All the rest of the Nfl networks are decent(apart from Sanders) but my favourite has to be Jim Mora. A class pundit, tells it how he really sees it, he has no problem critcising current players and coaches, something you rarely see on NflNetwork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,260 ✭✭✭jdivision

Have to say hate Aikman, Sanders, Rich Eisen, Tony Kornheiser.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭Sea Devils

You forgot to mention Joe Buck..

Some of the NFL Network guys are rather decent e.g. Rod woodson ,Marshall Faulk or Mike Maycock but others such as Jamie Dukes or Deoin Sanders are the reason why I don't watch Total Access or Gameday as much as I should

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 85 ✭✭faulk28

My preferred game callers are Aikman and Buck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Karlusss

I'm surprised so many people hate Deion Sanders, especially when he's so clearly there for the colour commentary. He's there to say he hates the Eagles fans and to wear some kind of mink coat because it's cold in Pittsburgh. Let's Go Prime Time is a must-watch every week for me, for the pure humour alone.

As for the rest of them, surely you can't say people like Mariucci, Mora, TD, Marshall Faulk, Warren Sapp, Rod Woodson, etc, haven't picked up anything from playing in and dominating the NFL? To me, someone like Schefter, as good as he is, is always the guy reading "Team X are 3rd in the pass, Team Y are 28th against it, ergo it's going to be a big day", whereas someone like Faulk knows that a particular style or a particular match-up gives one team the advantage etc. It's another level of knowledge of the game, having been through as many snaps as those guys have.

That said... what the hell is with Jamie Dukes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,500 ✭✭✭ReacherCreature

I've no clue about Dukes, The Wikipedia page don't give away much about him either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Dukes
