Respraying my bike

    Hows things?

Looking at respraying my bike on the weekend. Not sure why really, just feel like a project.

Had intended sanding it down as much as possible, applying a couple of coats of primer, another couple of colour coats and then a top glossy coat.

Have paint stripper (nitromors) and a heat gun - do you reckon I should use either of them as well?

I guess Im looking for opinions and advice on what to do. Paint-wise, where would I find what I need? How much would I need?

Also, colour suggestions would be good. I was thinking of black, though thats just cuz I have no imagination. Think I have some silver car paint around somewhere - maybe could use that.

    Thanks...

Not sure if the heat gun is a great idea. I used paint stripper on a raleigh burner a few years back. Hard work, but comes out great. You could just leave it chromed. That'd save you painting it. :D

One thing: For the love of god, before you spray, remove absolutely everything (including headset cups) and put masking tape over every thread on the frame. My brother's friend resprayed a bike of his without removing anything and then asked me to give it a service. I just about got the brakes working before giving up. It was just impossible to release any bolts and the rear mech was destroyed.

Thanks for that Seamus - had intended taking as much ancilliary stuff off as possible before setting to work.

    Anyone any idea about paint?

    Aint she a beaut?

    Finally got the bike finished.

Took all ancilliary bits off, used nitromores to remove old paint and sanded her down all over.

Next I primed, then undercoated, then gave it two colour coats and finally a top coat of primer.

Had trouble getting the gears fixed up again so brought it round to my LBS who put on a new derailer. Runnin a dream now.

Had hoped to change it over to a fixed gear, but was told this wasnt possible, that I needed horizontal drop outs.

The camera is kind. Great colour but there's runs and blotches everywhere AND i ran out of paint... (Stupid halfords bad value cans) The lacquer ran too. I also touched the lacquer while it was wet, dumbass I know. I really made a mess of it. I think its a massive lack of patience that causes me to be so bad at it. I enjoy all the mechanical bits but the finishing is painful. I'm putting it back together as soon as my new seatpost arrives. Can't wait!

Full details are in my project thread..

Thanks Jollylee - hav been following your posts with interest. Thought yours looked great tbh!

Finish isnt quite glossy - whatever way the primer left it. Its good though. There are a couple of blemishes here and there where I ran into patience difficulties. Nothing too bad though. It really is a matter of taking as long as possible to do it. Would have benefitted from hanging the bike up rather than having it upturned.

Lessons learned for my next project - just need myself an old racer frame...!

    frame...!
Maybe a couple more coats of clear lacquer would leave a better gloss. Cans of clear lacquer are cheap too.

Its addictive work. I thought about buying this for a few minutes but another bike project might be a bit overkill for one year.

well you might have seen my recent pants off (sorry paints off ) thread i decided seeing as it was my one and only MTB and being rebuilt with fairly good bits. i took it to the local car shop and hes charging me 100 euro to spray up the frame ( i stripped it with nitromors first) hopeing for new forks under the tree as well as a couple more deliveries from chain reaction

Sounds like a good deal. I'm starting to think my paintjob aint as hard wearing as it should be. Will try a garage next time perhaps!
