I'm sure the OP means that Joey Barton = He Emulates Roy Orbison.

On topic, I use 'on the bus'.

It may be said in that way because people tend to hop 'on' and 'off' a bus. Whereas in a car, this is less likely to be the case. Although I wouldn't say i'm on the taxi.

It's because bus and car are different types of pronouns. You own your car and you don't own the bus.
You say you're "on the internet/boards.ie" not "in" it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,024 ✭✭✭Redpunto

How bout owning a yacht, im on the yacht, im in the yacht,

    right both sound not right.

Well what if the car isn't yours? You could be in someone else's car...I still wouldn't say "I'm on my friends car" unless I actually meant ON it.

I duno why it is. I'd say "on the bus" or "on the train" or "on the plane", but "in the car".

Maybe because a car is a smaller, confined space. So it actually feels like you're inside something. Whereas a bus/plane/train etc you can move around and stuff. I duno

You can't stand up in a car, that's gotta be something to do with it.
I've a feeling the answer has to do with grammar though. Shame I failed education :(

Interesting question; over here posting a below par thread in Afterhours on boards.ie under strict mod rule out of the computerless public's eye.

Sorry but what are you trying to say in that sentence ?

On the topic of containment, without being anal about it, me as an insider to all this, you being outside the scope of understanding of my meaning, my 'say' is a statement of interest in the question.

Actually the "in" and "on" and "at" uses are what foreigners seem to struggle at most. I know a Polish girl who's been here for over two years and she has practically perfect English, but she still makes mistakes with those three words. Like she'd say "I'm on a party" or something like that. Or "in the bus" etc

OP should be banned for having a scumbag like Joey Barton in his name!

    And.... what Gordon said!

because in the good old days you could actually sit on top of a train if there were no seats left

Personally, I think its because if your in a car you will be in a sitting position and nothing else normally.
If your in a bus, there's also a good chance you will be standing, so some say "I'm on the bus (but not sitting)" that and/or you have to step onto the bus to use it.
Having stepped onto it at its entrance, you are therefore on it (and the phrase subsequently stuck into our every day use)

    We have a wiener.

You step from the pavement to the floor of the plane/train/bus etc. without changing to a seated position. Therefore you are just moving from one platform to another, and more often than not will be walking on the ground of the bus/train, etc. meaning you have stepped onto it, as opposed to having to change your body's position and closing the door after yourself (otherwise securing you INto the car/van/etc.).

Good point, though there are a few exceptions - On a bike/motorbike for example. Although that actually makes sense because you are literally sitting on it.

Because they've spotted a male aquaintance that they know and are pointing him out, but have a heavy natural accent

this is generally dublin people that speak this way but answers appreciated anyway

This is because they don't have busses down the country.

No! This is important! Devil worshipper! (Postcount? 666? Back, ye spwan of Satan!)
    That or a bus driver.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The person who wrote the wheels on the bus go round and round made the mistake, and it just snowballed from there.

Whats below par? This is the After Hours thread not the rocket science section!

Personally, I'm glad to see the likes of this question being raised if only to better one's grammar.
God knows there are some posters on the boards that could do with taking note of the proper use of grammar, read this thread and actually learn something!
