Um...I guess for uses you could say there's less risk of damaging your hearing as you don't have headphones jammed in your ears?

found a good timeline of the history of audio players here http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/mp3-player.htm/printable if people find good sources or information on the internet this would be a great place for us to pool together cos this project is a balls!!

this project is a total joke!

docking stations of all things to pick!

no idea how i'm doing this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭don101

Im in the same boat.. such a rotten project.. simply mp3 player would have been a helll of alot handier!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

I'm doing the same project. First off:

There is no history as one company never patented or created one first

An MP3 docking station could be a MP3 CD Player. Define a "docking station" : To couple

The "MP3" CD is "docked" in the "Player" - I coupled the MP3 Cd and the player

Also, most are made for iPods with a limited selection for other brands.

Chances are your will be one for 100's if not thousands so individuality is ruled out

Many people are doing the history of MP3 players, why? It ain't in the question. I'm being made do it but I feel its irrelevant information.

    Any thoughts?

I just typed a long reply and got a database error! :(:(

    http://www.t4.ie/Exam_Assessment/DCG/DCG%20Student%20Assignment%20(HL%20&%20OL).pdf

Last page. That's the brief, and by the wording I'd say it's just actual MP3 players that can be docked to play aloud. I'm doing the history of how people listened to and shared music

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Docking stations are becoming increasingly popular with young people who wish to share the
music collection on their personal MP3 players with friends.

Many docking stations have features such as a charging facility, in-built speakers, independent
    volume control

I could interpet that as a MP3 CD player. Its an MP3 Player, can share music, can be charged, can have speakers etc...

I know its a stupid argument but I suppose the department can't say "iPods are becoming..."

    Anyways, Worst Project Ever

I officially hate MP3 docking stations, if I see another one in my life it will have been too early, did someone in the dep seriously think "Hmm , i know how we can really screw with DCG students heads".

Anyway now thats out of my system, I`m nearly finished output 2, moving on to output 3 tomorrow.

There is no history, thats the catch so to speak. All the technology existed and was just gelled together. Find a niche market, its what I did

Never even heard of the subject you's are doing. But for your project you's could register on some tech forums and ask for help, the people on them usually know more than anybody really should about gadgets and what not.

I h8 dis project!! I've it nearly done but im afraid da dockin station is 2 simple!! I'm tinkin bot changin it again!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

Thats what i thought too but then when you actually start modelling it there is at least 8 different parts in even the most simple docking station

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

    8 parts? :) I'm on 56 and a mate is on 100.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 521 ✭✭✭Prowetod

Why so many parts??? when 10ish is plenty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭timmywex

I dont see how you can get that many parts! :O 5 is plenty, thats what it asks for, if there is only 5 in the docking station, so be it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

How the hell can you get 100 parts?considering that any 2 parts that are the same only count as 1 and anything that is not physically joined to the docking station such as remote controls , plugs, wires etc. don't count at all. They only mark you on your best 5 parts anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Correction, there is no marking scheme. Plus, you need to define one part. Does it have to be an assembly? Or can it be a solid block? Mine are all assemblys, so its 58 + each assembly bit...

I amn't boasting or anything. Its just how many are in the station.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 thebackpage

each battery and similar things only count as one and the solidworks drawing has to go together the same way as the actual docking station so how can you get that many parts i mean you have
    -main body
    -speakers
    -battery cover
    -buttons
    -lights and signal receptors
    -battery coils and the like
like where do you get 58 and 100 pieces could you describe some of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

    One Screen

    -Glass
    -Housing
    -Screws
    -Bracket

To me, when thats assembled, its one part.

I've done the first 2 pages, it's all a mass of downloaded images and text, it probably won't even get me 60% of the marks going for the first 2 pages :'(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 521 ✭✭✭Prowetod

the solidworks drawing has to go together the same way as the actual docking

Are you sure about that? Thought it just have to look really like it and have over 5 parts!

Nope, it has to be the docking station. Not a good looking replica.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

Although it is supposed to be the docking station do they have any way of actually checking how accurate yor model is?all they could really do is compare it against photos of it on the internet and i doubt if they will even do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

I amn't putting my hopes on a hunch. We're DCG students we're suppose to have an eye for detail and love everything down to the mm... :D

But you are right in the sense they ain't going to check every CD for all the files. If it took 10 seconds to load and open a CD, not even look at the contents, times 250+ scripts, thats 42 minutes. Then add in correction and review time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭whadabouchasir

I agree although if you dont have your own docking station then you have no choice but to make up measurements and leave out parts. Also isn't it true that all of the project has to be done at school?

Not so. They expect you to find out. I did and the nearest one to me is in California, USA.

Yes, under supervision and without help. But seriously, enforce that..

Nope, the brief says "Generate a detailed computer model, comprising of at least 5 parts."
Detailed computer model=not exactly the same as the docking station.
Ya can chuck in random pins, extra frames etc and they can't exactly mark you down because you're going by the wording of the brief :)
Isn't that a bit of relief

Also, they know not every student is going to have a docking station, so they expect you to go on what you can.
I.e. go on the net, search docking station, and choose the one you want. From there, go on the pictures you can find.
But to make sure it's detailed, it's good to add in a few buttons on it down to a tee :)

Accuracy = Marks. Plus if you do the same as someone else, which is probable, you'll be marked against the best one.

Best thing to do is choose a little known dock or an obscure one which is what I'm doing :)
Common brands etc are a no-no
There is quite a lot of different docks out there though ( found over 20 different brands within 30 secs, add in the amount of different docks each company makes= a hell of a lot of docks)

Bottom of the page, download the pdf.
They have these on most docking station's pages.

As far as i know the whole reason for you submitting a CD as well as the hard copy is so that they can see when all of the files were originally created. Also apparently it is possible to find out what computer created a certain solidworks file as the computer "tags" the file as you work on it.

True that, they have all the I.P. addresses already logged, so if anyone plans on doing it at home, not gonna happen Joe lol

Well, it has nothing to do with IP address's mate. I heard they were tagged but I went through the files and can't find a tag. It could be tagged to the serial number of the SD program but that wouldn't tag an individual. Plus our school has 30 computers so if you changed computer etc the tag would be different.

Its impossible to enforce, electronically at least
