Ideally yes. In practice no of course not. No one is an absolute saint. Keep it clean for 90% of the time and you'll be on the right path.

if I like to drink how do I fit it into a healthy lifestyle

Alcohol is a terrible in terms of empty calories. It dosen't fit well if you really want to turn things around. You can get away with a few drinks but don't fool yourself when you are onto your 10th beer of the night.

    2. How do the more healthy people on this forum tackle xmas how can one go through this period still enjoy it but not go off track

We have our cake and eat it - literally. see Point 1 above.

Remember it is a sprint not a marathon. If you start off too quick you'll burn yourself out with the effort required. Cut out the cr@p in your diet gradually, increase your exercise gradually... take photos and measurements every two weeks.

It dosen't matter how much you are loosing as long as it is going down over a period of time. Eventually you'll get there.

    Good luck!

I could not stick to that, I hope you can. I hope you are not forcing yourself to eat what you consider "good". You really need to change what you eat permanently and find food you like that are OK, there is no need to force feed yourself stuff you do not like, you will not stick to that in the long term.

Most peoples problem is simply portion sizes, I would highly recommend getting a digital scales and monitoring what you eat. It will open your eyes to what your calorie intake is, and more importantly what foods have high/low calories per portion, it may surprise you a lot. You can eat absolute crap and be thin, also you could (over)eat healthy food and be obese.

I have some posts on the drink here

I would say try and introduce one change a week. So for the week starting tomorrow, change your diet to porridge or eggs, etc. Then the next week, go to the gym a few times. Then the week after, take a look at your lunch, etc..

I know it's really tempting to just go perfect from day one but it isn't sustainable and as BossArky said, you'll burn yourself out.

Why don't you post up what a regular day's diet is like?

It's a debate on whether it's better to go all out or do it gradually. With the diet, I'd be inclined to clean out your kitchen and dump all the junky stuff. No biscuits, cake, sugar, frosted flakes, jars of mince-meat, tins of condensed milk etc. Go shopping and fill up with lots of good stuff, so that even if you get hungry and eat more than you'd planned, it's still food that will benefit you.

Also, it's very hard to overeat eggs or salmon, for instance. They have a natural cut-0ff point where you just stop eating. If you are like me, I'd guess than when it comes to ice-cream and biscuits, you have no cut-off point. You'll keep eating till they are all gone.

Believe me Eileen, I can overeat on salmon :o

I'd go with the clean sweep of processed junk food - out of sight out of mind. Maybe eliminate that the first week, and make sure you're eating good, clean, whole foods instead. Then the following week you could look at portion size and so on.

True, I can eat a LOT of salmon (also grille steak) but they are great foods that are stuffed full of nutrients. Even if you pig you a bit on them, they do tend to keep you feeling full longer, so you don't spend the evening nibbling.

Vampireskiss; I suggest that once you have made your kitchen a junk-free zone, you eat to hunger. Most people eat just because it's time to eat, rather than because they are actually hungry. Eat only when you are hungry, stop as soon as you are not, and then see how you are doing. I'll bet that without ever going hungry, you find you are eating a lot less than you are used too.
