The New Karate Kid

Jaden Smith will star in Columbia's reworking of the hit 1984 film The Karate Kid.

Smith, the son of actor Will, was first linked with the martial arts remake more than a year ago.

The Chris Murphy-scripted movie will loosely follow the plot of the original, which revolved around a young boy who learns to stand up to bullies with the help of mentor Mr. Miyagi.

Will Smith, who appeared alongside Jaden in The Pursuit Of Happyness, will produce the remake.

Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita starred in the first three Karate Kid movies, while the fourth was the first leading role for Hilary Swank.

This is probably a Disney version

Wont be the same without Pat Morita (RIP)

Agreed, nobody could fill the shoes of Pat Morita. There isn't even anyone who could come close.

.... well maybe chuck norris ... then id consider seeing the remake.

IMO this is gonna suck ass,

I'm gonna go out on an early limb and go for Jackie Chan as Mister Meagi (Spelling??)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

I dont understand why they do this.

i only watched the karate kid a few weeks ago and its just brilliant, everything about it is, Mr Miagki rocks ( rip :( ) and the bad guys are great!

I can bet if this remake goes ahead it will have a topless and pre-oiled training sequence and a cameo form Will Smith and will basically be a mis between never back down and high school musical...

    ...which is very very bad!

    JADA PINKETT SMITH interview
Now Jayden is set to become a big star in his own right as the new Karate Kid – and he’s already banned mum from appearing in the movie.

“He’s been doing karate since he was 3 and he’s almost a junior blackbelt,” says his proud parent.

“People will be very surprised to see how my son gets down!

“But there’s no cameo for mommy. My son has made it very clear that I am just to be mommy, and I abide by his wishes.”

This could be good if it actually had real fighting in it, unlike every other karate kid movie.

Jackie Chan is in talks to star in Columbia's remake of The Karate Kid, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Rush Hour actor is being lined up to play martial arts expert Mr Miyagi in the reworking of the 1984 movie.

Ha Ha, I called it (Post 5), Fairly obvious choice though

Not in talks any more... Jackie Chan Confirmed as Mr. Miyagi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭geoffraffe

Jackie Chan as Mr Miyagi eh? It'll be interesting to see how the writers write the scene where Mr Miyagi gets hit in the nuts to great comic effect. Ah Jackie, you're just too predictable.

I've a feeling this will be more "three Ninjas" than "Karate Kid". "Light 'em up boys, YAAHHHH"

Is some of it being filmed in Ireland?

Will Smith was on Xpose for an interview for Seven Pounds and he mentioned he would be coming to Ireland for this movie

    You know what's weird...

The guy who played Terry Silver is actually younger than Ralph Macchio.

    karatekidiii5.jpg

But anyway, it's quite obvious that this movie will be family orientated so I wouldn't go expecting too much unless you're under 14.

It looks ridiculous, seriously, Jaden Smith looks about seven or something.

He looks so miscast he deserves his own thread.

And if Jackie Is training him wouldn't it be class if he thought him how to beat up 30 people with a ladder :pac::pac:

On another note, is it based in China? are they screenshots?

Yup, it's an example of the muscle Will Smith has! :pac:

That only works when funny looking men do it. :p

I'm not sure, it would be strange if all of it was based in China.

    first a white kid version
    then female kid version
    then a black kid version

    that how it goes

    how about the mma kid?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,046 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

Ralph Macchio was 23 when he made the first one and made 3 in 5 years, so at that rate we'll get to see Jaden Smith, who's 11, in Karate Kid XXVIII in 2026 :D

Ok you got me there but i dont think they were able to test Top gun because they couldnt get near it due to the dangerous levels of gaydiation coming from it.

Totally miscat!...he's a child, he should be playing with Lego or a xbox, he does not suit the role!...he's too young!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,572 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

The trailer isn't awful. Jaden Smith definitely looks too young for the role ..... he's only 11.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,630 ✭✭✭The Recliner

Seriously how can they cast Jackie Chan and call it the Karate Kid

Kung Fu Kid or Martial Arts Kid maybe

But Karate is Japanese and although American born Pat Morita was of Japanese descent

The remake of one of my favourite childhood films is one of the worst movies I have seen recently. The Smith Kid is completely wrong for this part. He is way too young and comes across as cocky, arrogant and spoilt which means you never care or see him like the underdog you should.

The running times is ridiculously long at well over two hours. It lacks any kind of real story that makes you care or feel like your having fun. Nothing is fresh and throughout the film your robbed of any surprises as it follows almost exactly the same line but done much worse that its predecessor.
The ending is a complete remake of the first film without any of the excitement or tension and unlike the first they haven't fleshed out any of the supporting cast to play any kind of meaningful role. It limps to a dull conclusion of trying to reinvent the crane :(

"Get this a Body Bag! Yeah!"

    Opr

Instead of wax on wax off its coat on coat off

I agree Smith is way too young for the role

What ye on about too young?? At least he's a kid, Ralph Macchio was 23 when he played The Karate "Kid".

Man I have a high threshold for pain usually, I have seen the Twilight films in the cinema after all, but I draw the line at this. No way I'm going to see Will Smith's spawn on screen, worst of all is that the film has actually done well I think so plenty more roles I'm sure for Jayden Smith unfortunately.

I saw it yesterday and I have to say I actually liked it. I do agree though about Jaden Smiths age, I think it would have worked better if he was older but still it worked as is.

Aw! :( Never knew Mr Miagki was dead! :(
    RIP

Loved those movies before, but I can see the latest one being a kind of step up movie with some funny quips thrown in. Meh

Can anyone who has seen it tell me if there is a montage? I would give my right hand to see a decent montage in a film. They are sorely lacking in today's movies.

    You're the best, around!

Am I the only person who found this movie a bit disturbing to to watch.

As has been said by a few other posters Jaden Smith, as Dre, is too young for such a role and as such this made me very uncomfortable for a couple of reasons.

His mother was negligent. She more or less abandoned him to wander around China first on his own and then with the man who came to fix the shower.

His relationship with Mr. Han was slightly inappropriate including his taking off the boys shirt when he was unconcious.

While I'm at it, why did he a 12 year old boy have a six pack and more muscle definition than your average WWE wrestler.

The romance between two children was so wrong to be watching on the big screen and it was played out in a much more adult way than is appropriate from two such young actors.

I go into it in more detail here in my blog but am I the only one who saw these things? Am I going mad? Have I turned into the Daily Mail?

I agree, the movie it way to grown up in ways for kids..I was shocked at the fight scenes. really annoying me the way they are making good family enjoyable movies into movies more about the fighting than anything else. I said i would see this first and then decide on wether to see the A-Team needless to say i was so dissapointed I just cant go to see it.

Its stupid directors and actors - Watched Diary of A Whimpy Kid and its great, funny, has a moral storey line, no rough fighting in it thats how it should be done..
